1. Disappointing... [Rating: 5/10]
After hearing comments about how great this drama is, I expected something more. Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed. It's a classic story of good versus evil: passionate, good doctors versus evil, manipulative, power-hungry ones. It is difficult to think that doctors aren't treating patients because they want to help them, but choosing their patients so that they can gain a better reputation. This portrayal of unethical practice is what aggravates me the most, and is what makes the drama wholly unrealistic.

Armed with the hands and the intuition of God, Asada comes across to me as a rather weak main character. He is a stagnant character that does not grow throughout the drama; the only possible impact any of his miraculous feats had on him were pitifully summed up in a single sentence at the last episode. I found Kato Akira and Ijyuuin to be the stronger characters, and we can actually see how their past, decisions and beliefs impact their future decisions. Why Kihara is there, I don't know - he does not provide any comic relief whatsoever.

Though the director/writer tries to inject a whole load of suspense into the proceedings, it comes across as rather boring and time-wasting - things in a hospital don't happen so lethargically and neither do doctors hang out in their offices 24/7. The operating scenes were realistic, though - one of the few plus points in this otherwise unwatchable drama. And thumbs up for the soundtrack, too.

In summary: boring and predictable script, boring characters, rather unrealistic look at medical situations. Plus points: few good characters, good soundtrack, great operation scenes.

At about episode 3 I had already decided to give this a 4 and see how it went from there. I added a point after watching Kato and Ijyuuin's character grow.

2. This MAKES me KNOW the meaning of the "TEAMMATE" [Rating: 9/10]
Watching this really makes me feel that you don't have to stand alone to fight the problem in your life..

This plot is all about how a people (asada) live with a vision of humidity and having no tolerance with character that against him. But for the consequences, he's being rejected by the "ruler" who just only seek for his own pride and wealthy. But since he has a very good skill, he's being used to help a person (aki) to complete her thesis so she can be a proffesor.. But lately, is not aki who control him. It's just the opposite that aki had changed by him and have the same vision in the end..

Really, if you watch it each episode, you'll see how a people can strongly "stand" against bad society around him and the important thing is he have friends (his teammate) who has vision same as him and their doing the job together as a one team..
If I had to be in that team, I can make sure that I will not turn against my team 'coz it's a perfect team..
You know why I'm telling that's perfect ?
It's just because that every teammate SUPPORT each other.
They DO their BEST for the same vision, together;
They SHARE all the joy and sadness they had, together;
They NEVER GIVE UP on something important;
They BELIEVE and DEPEND each other;
And the most important things is all of them have a mindset that's TO LIVE FOR OTHER people (they don't have egoism).

I have that team right now (even it's not in the medical society) and I'm think to make a good society with it...

This film is a good one to watch..
Don't miss it!!!

3. has a diggable anime-feel to it, as well as a supe [Rating: 8/10]
i rate this drama 8.5. it has simply the best OST i ever heard in a japanese drama. it's kinda like the anime initial d. without the european/japanese pop/dance music accompanying the races, it just wouldn't be as good. same with the OST here, it integrates the different scenes of Iryu soooo seamlessly be it sad/happy/intense/surgery moments. to be honest without the music, i'd probably only give this drama a 7.5 only. but the OST just pumped up the drama rating to an 8.5. i especially digged the song "Red Dragon", sucha wicked mix of rock and orchestra instruments. it got my blood pumping during the surgeries.

Sakaguchi Kenji was a suitable choice to play the main role. He does have a commanding aura to take such a role. he always looks ready to own when he's prepped up to operate. he has room for further improvement but he has improved since the last time i saw him playing a small-time gangsta in IWGP.
Teppei looked like "Small Turtle", a geeky looking HK actor who played small roles in Stephen Chow movies in early 1990s. hahaha. he was ok.
Izumi played her no-nonsense role pretty effectively. but i thought her character was pretty stupid not to dig Kenji and to continue liking the other guy. obviously a blind woman. The rest of the side characters weren't too bad.

give this underlooked drama a try. it may not have the hottest actor/actress in it, but i find it fairly entertaining. and keep your ears open for the nice OST accompanying the different scenes.

4. Awesome [Rating: 8/10]
I first discovered the dorama from this website and after watching, I would say it is addictive. I just love Asada and Ijuuin sensei. I just can't stop episodes after episodes. There are touching moments, such as the episode between Kato and her ex-Head Nurse, Ijuuin sensei with the obaasan patient. It also has its light moments, provided by Kihara and twin nurses. In fact, being a fan of Kyumei Byoto 24 Ji, all the graphics made it easier to understand all the stuff they were doing. Not just a beautiful story with a beautiful cast, the struggles of the doctors are real to me. A great story and I agreed that it is underrated.

5. Excellent medical dorama [Rating: 9/10]
Among the best medical doramas i've seen. Casting Kenji with Izumi was a good choice and the rest of the supporting cast was very well picked. I particularly liked Natsuki Mari's character :P. The OST was quite appealing and served the dorama well, particularly with all the suspenseful moments. Plotwise, this dorama had a clear direction and continuously drove toward that goal without losing overall focus, usually a problem with other medical doramas. i'd definitely recommend watching this series if you are into medical related doramas - one of the best of 2006.

i watched this drama with...a few expectations. i had heard good stuff about it, so i decided to try it out. what i got exceeded my expectations! so..is it corny? occassionally. far-fetched? definitely. entertaining? does that even need to be answered? =P iryu was definitely one of the best jdramas that i've seen in a while =) it's good to see uplifting dramas like these :D...and yes....it ALMOST made me want to become a surgeon. almost. =P and my medical vocabulary has expanded too....not such a bad side effect i'd say =)

Full of blood and human organ in every episode, but teach a lot about humanity.
I don't think that this drama is unrealistic...
If you are looking for challenging drama and something that make you can't stop watching, i suggest you to watch this drama.
The actors are good, the plot is interesting, you can learn much from this drama..

8. Too unrealistic ! [Rating: ?/10]
Great production, good acting, very educative, however it's too unrealistic and too heroic ! Japanese dramas are always overloaded with this extreme heroic roles....

By the way, I hate the ending.. in Thailand we have only great and world-class doctors,..... there is no place for Dr. Nogouchi... :-b .... but we would welcome someone like... Ryotarou Asada.... and Ijuuin (most wated ha ! ha ! ha !)

9. Awesome medical drama [Rating: 9/10]
It was a great medical drama. The surgeries were highly realistic, and I think that was one of the strong points of this drama. Other than the medical aspect, this drama had a solid plot (which followed the manga pretty closely) and a great OST.

Overall, it was one of the few medical dramas in which the medical aspect was not greatly overshadowed by other things in the plot.

This was a GREAT drama, I can't believe everything that went on, I cried on one episode!
This is one of Sakaguchi's BEST, and Teppei didn't do bad at all, her was PERFECT, not a hyper kid at all. I suggest this for almost ANYONE, though it is a LITTLE graphic on the surgery, it's a very well plotted out story, they truly are the best team, especially as actors.

I watched the whole thing but...
it was so medically unrealistic (perhaps to be expected of a jdorama). Asada is the GTO/Western hero of Japanese medical dramas, which is as epic as it is unbelievable. Conclusion: try it out. :)

Basically you'll have a very ambitious woman creating a team of very talented guys doing very difficult operations, while somebody from above is trying to ruin their plans. First episodes bored me, but once Batista operations start the show gets far more interesting. Asada's character reminded me to Godhand Teru (which I had seen before) but this show is much better. Acting was cool but I hated those long speeches while somebody is about to die... Maybe plot is not very original but it is totally entertaining and worthwatching. Btw, it reminded me to Trauma Center (videogame) :D

The best medical dorama i've ever watched.. in fact its the best medical series that i've ever watched! I can say that because im really not a big fan of all those medical stuff... still Iryu really shocked me... it's that good!
The casting is superb... Flawless... The plot (something that most medical show lack of) is reaaaallllyyy nice. i couldnt stop watching the dorama. I still dont give a damn about all those medical stuff.... but Iryu really is one of the best doramas i've watched..

i loved this drama...very intense and well-done! i admit that it has some elements that resemble shiroi kyoto, but it actually has a different story altogether. I think the first episode will really make others think twice about continuing with the drama, but please don't let it stop you! it only gets better and more intense with every ep. i think the shine of this drama are koike teppei and inamori izumi; they've given powerful performances and definitely worth the watch!

Really good music. Casting was superbly done...everyone matched their roles really well and even though we all know Sakaguchi is practically an indestructible god in there, still enjoy seeing him succeed operation after operation. Used to think Sakaguchi was a bit wierd (after watching FIGHTING GIRLS) but this has changed my whole opinion of him. And Teppei is just CUTE. Cannot imagine why his acting is so good as he is only 19.

I'm glad I watched this, because I almost didn't. It's awesome! The story and pacing is very good, the characters are interesting and have strong personalities, and the music is great. Quite a few parts that made me go wow. Nerdy Teppei is love (go Harry Potter!), Sakaguchi is uber cool, Inamori Izumi is really charismatic and pretty, Kitamura is creepily fantastic... the entire cast is really good actually.

July 2006: I watched alot of medical dramas, this is actually the first ever j-medical drama i've watched which revealed the 'organs' and procedures during operations, and it's very detailed and well explained with pictures and stuff, although it's not 100% true but still, this drama showed how medical dramas should be. Nice cast, with an awesome ost, if you prefer romance dramas, avoid this.
7. Comments by Eyeyore [Rating: 7/10]
Highly addictive. Tried hard not to start ep.1, believing that many scenes are far-fetched, hero-centric,etc. Well, it is. And in addition to that, every surgery is like watching a baseball match. All the other doctors had so much time that they are either gossiping, politicking or watching the 'baseball match' 'live' broadcast. By throwing aside logic and reality, this show is enjoyable.
8. Comments by Shindou [Rating: 9/10]
Excellent casting for medical dorama. Inamori Izumi and Sakaguchi Kenji clearly carried the dorama thru with some great support from the rest of the cast. Natsuki Mari was a delight to watch and Kishibe Ittoku was an excellent choice for the professor role. Plotwise, this definitely kept my on the edge of my seat the whole time. For a medical dorama, very well done!
9. Comments by vieuxcon [Rating: 9/10]
10. Comments by EstherM [Rating: 7/10]
A bit too much pathos and a touch too heroic for me! But definitly one of the better medical dramas! ItLs worth watching for the performances of the cast, for the sometimes quite gory surgery scences and for at least slightly touching the darker sides of the medical world (ie internal power struggles, corrupt or anxious doctors, pharma industry power).

this is the 1st medical drama that I really like. 1. becausethe haracter of this series.... dr asada ryutarou... and the team.... if we got this kind of doc in this world... we will be save.... 2. the type line of this story really tough...and I hope there will be more... but sad to say, the story already ending wit the bad guy lose....

Absolutely riveting. Unrealism aside, Iryu probably ranks as one of the best dramas of 2006. The episodes are well-paced and scripted, and the drama benefits from an ensemble of interesting characters that are well fleshed out by the cast. Special mention for Natsuki Mari as Dr Kitou the astute, cunning, yet charming head of emergency.
13. Comments by kaonashi [Rating: 8/10]
I began watching this drama without any expectations at all & it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. It's an inspiring feel good drama about a highly skilled surgical team who perform miracles together. This just might be Sakaguchi's best drama so far. It's not quite as good as the 24h ER series but it's close.
Recommended 8+

Good dorama for me.
The filming is professional and modern, which is not that common among dorama.
The OST is great, which is another thing that is seldom in doramas I think
And for the rest it works pretty well: good acting, good story, not repetitive, and a good mix of drama and comedic relief.

An addicting drama. The stroy is really interesting, as isn't an ordinary story in Japan, and not alike with ER... not at all...! Kenji Sakaguchi also portrayed the character really well. Not to forget the cool opening/ending. REALLY RECOMMENDED!!!

This was such an amazing dorama! It made surgeons look so damn kakkoi. The story was well-written and its themes are easily understood. It also makes you feel like your IQ has gone up a couple of points by listening to all that medical lingo... It sucks you in and never lets you go.

One of the best dorama I've ever watched!! I like the cast, the plot, the storyline, I like all!!! However, I think Teppei is too young to be a doctor.. But still, his acting is very good.
Finished it in just two days!! (Would've been only one day if I hadn't had to go to work!!)

This was refreshing after a bunch of romance doramas. Very cool and "clinical" setting, yet dragging you in with high suspense. Broad variety in the storyline, you never get bored. Average soundtrack and actors. Very thrilling and satisfying end.

This story reminds me GodHand Teru, but it's the complex one and more interesting flow of the story when politics involved to medical world ^^ good to watch make curiousity and add your knowledge about type of operationable diseases

Top quality and innovative drama. This medical drama didn't get bogged down in too much romantic relationship dynamics but it did recognize some. The videography was definitely very kakko ii and the whole cast was SOLID.
