1. Holds its Own [Rating: 8/10]
Although I found the storyline, especially in the first few episodes, quite a bit like Ichi Ritoru no Namida, this drama was able to hold itfs own. I havenft seen the movie so I have nothing to compare it to, and I think this gave me an advantage while watching it.

The drama is memorable, but not necessarily because of the tragic story. The show focused more on life itself and friendship. I found this a nice change from all the other dramas in which the disease is the main character and everything else takes a second seat. Sawajiri Erika was grand in portraying her role. She was really convincing and REAL. Yamada Takayuki is one of the finest young actors out there and he didnft disappoint. The casting for all characters was nicely done. The songs featured in the drama were also lovely and added a nice touch.

I did find that the plot moved rather quickly. Everything happens so fast that itfs almost overwhelming. And I did get peeved that Karou died before she could even perform one last time. Her whole disease just seemed to be an excuse to have a tragic ending. It wasnft played out smoothly at all. Other than this, it was a good drama to watch. Itfs not up to par with other gtear-jerkersh but it still holds it own and therefore deserves a watching.

2. It's not Sekachuu or 1-littoru by any means~~~ [Rating: 8/10]
I'll give this drama an 8/10, but it's more like an 8.5. Sawajiri Erika is once again playing a doomed girl so I wonder how much of an acting challenge she was presented with when making this story. Yamada Takayuki is also playing a familiar role. This should really be the *last* time these two play these types of roles. It'll get stale very quickly. These two are in their 20's so it's about time they stopped playing teenagers. I am not down on the drama. It was actually very entertaining. The supporting cast was very good and more important to the story than those of 1-littoru. This needed to be the case since the effect of the main character on the others had to be shown.

Don't expect this to be a tearjerker -- it wasn't. If we had a scale for that, it rates a 5/10 -- if not lower.

3. Ikeuchi aya v.2? [Rating: 9/10]
i admit when i first heard of this drama and what the character would be like i thought, oh another 1 litre of tears, but i decided to give it a try if not for my love of dramas but because of my appreciation for sawajiri erika's acting ability. i can honestly say i was pleased with what i saw. it was a surprise to hear a decent singing voice come out of erika-san's mouth, and i feel that the romance being developed to the point it was was a plus. honestly i knew the ending would not be the happy kind but for awhile the ending hit me as depressing, but then after staying with it and watching it, i came to realize what a beautiful ending it was. people may say it didn't live up to expectations, but in my opinion it did quite a good job

4. Chase your dreams while you can! [Rating: 8/10]
Erika Sawajiri is getting too professional in acting dying roles. From her 1 litre of tears experience, i guess she had perfected the emotional scene. The only difference between 1 litre of tears and this is....one seek to live while the other seek for her dreams, her ambition of being a singer. Both dramas motivates ppl...but somehow this drama seems a bit of lacking. Kinda a fantasy that you know, won't happen in real life. Not the sickness but her luck meeting an understanding b.f and a music producer willingly to release her album. Nonetheless, the core part of the drama is the music. 2 excellent piece of songs sang by Erika Sawajiri. Not fully polish but great to listen.

5. better than one litre, much better than sekaichuu [Rating: 9/10]
nice storyline, erika and yamada made a good couple.
the way how they get closed, how yamada act cold toward her at first time, and finally how he support her.
well...the ending is a bit (or even very) unexpected, if it were not then it worth 10 from me.
it is disease related drama but not like One litre of tears that the main char got worse day by day (actually ep by ep) and so it is predictable, and then we can guess that the show will be all about how she will struggle for her life.
But this drama is a bit different, it involved many other thing:
how she affect the other chars (yamada's friends, the singer, the producer, etc), yamada's past with the singer.

undeniably taiyou no uta is another tear-jerkin drama of sumone coping with her disease - this time is is Xp - but the divine love projected from this beautifully-made drama surpasses it all. though taiyou no uta holds strong resemblance to drama-of-disease type alikes - sekai no chuusin & ichi rittoru no namida, it is how well the acting being hold up and the essence of majestic love being implied thorughout the story is wut measured. ive watched this story up till eps4 and still waiting eagerly for latter eps to be released. definately taiyou no uta is on my top list of best dramas so far ^^

Just finished this. Man the ending was cruel but as we all know she had to go due to the disease she had. But overall of this jdrama wasn't focused on what she had to suffer and not as intense as what 1LOT & Sekaii gave us an impression of, instead what the author was trying to prove to us was her undying passion for her dreams in spite of her disabilities, how strong she was and persevering all the way to her last breath which really touched my heart. Highly recommended jdrama for all to watch especially if you're a Erika fan like me! =D

But then again...if to choose....i prefer 1 litre of tears. Simply bcoz..the buildup and sadness of this drama is toward the end....

but

1 litre of tears start to get very emo from episode 3 onwards. Literally can cry every episode after that.

Despite that...this dorama still worth your time watching. Great casts too!

On its own, it would be considered just ok. if compared with 1 litres of tears or the movie version of taiyou no uta, it goes down several notches. the songs by erika was good but if compared with yui, it wasn't comparable. just it's luck to have been shown right after the movie...it had too much to fulfil the expectations of the watching public which explains the low ratings. too much unecessary sub-plots...as compared to the movie which focused on the 2 leads instead...and the music of course...

a story about a girl struck by XP (Xeroderma Pigmentosum), kaoru amane is an inspiring street musician with hopes of making it big as a composer-singer who writes and sings her own songs. filmed shortly after ichi ritoru no namida, taiyou no uta shares a great deal of similarities in terms of plot with sawajiri erika once again acting as a sick but courageous girl living her dying days. however, fans of 1ritoru no namida will be left disappointed with the show as there isn't much to be expected. a typical love story with it's ups and downs, i personally felt the ending was too rushed. not much touching scenes, cept' prolly for the last ep. on the other hand, the show can be credited for it's songs sang by erika, under the alias of kaoru amane. her vocals are surprisingly good. more eye candy for fans of erika as well who looks sweeter here with her long hair and rocker chic look. yamada takayuki did not fare badly either. in addition, there were also a few silly but cute scenes which made me smile. to conclude, taiyou no uta is watchable if you fancy seeing erika in a love story.

This is my second favorite dorama, first itLs played by my favorite male and female actors(Takayuki and Erika) and it got romance plus a tragic story and i really loved it.
I loved when Kaoru asked Kouji: "What are you gonna do after i die?" and he answers: "First iLm gonna cry a lot, then iLm gonna curse God for being so unfair and then iLm gonna cry again".
The thing that IMO destinguish this from other doramas about terminal desiases(Beatiful Life, 1 litre of Tears, Kami Sama Mou Sukoshi Dake, Sekai Chuushin) is the fact that KaoruLs character was really strong with great will and spirit, and that really touched me even though this is fictional(unlike 1 Litre of Tears for example).
Both Takayuki and Erika were superb in this, they couldnLt be better imo, and KaouruLs songs really gave a lot of meening to the story.
I loved everything about it:the beggining, the middle and specially the ending. I watched the whole thing in one day, i couldnLt go to sleep without watching the end lol.

Hesitate to watch this if you have already seen "1 Litre of Tears" and is hoping for something that might rival it. Sure it shares many similarities background-wise, including Erika as a sick lead character again, but the drama isn't anywhere near quality-wise. While the basic plot is fine, the flow in the execution can be questioned. It's nothing special, and the show has something of an identityproblem between serious and funny. The mix does not work. Another thing is that it tries too hard to be emotional engaging with the very dramatic music. The problem is that the drama seldom reaches as high of a level, making it seem forced. Erika still pulls out quite a good perfomance, and is likeable. However, and this might sound harsh, but it is when she is sick, weak and fragile that she is at her prime. Overall it is still a fine drama, but do not expect a masterpiece of any kind.

I didnt know anything about this disease until i've came across this darma... it's worth watching. The story is about a young girl who suffered from a rare genetic disease, xeroderma pigmentosupatients, also known as XP, those afflicted with this disease are extremely sensitive to the sun. Because of this disease she has, she must avoid all sources of UV radiation, the challenges she has to overcome and those who care for her... This is easier said than done.. How to avoid? How to protect against what we cannot avoid? Simple questions. But the answers are not so simple.. from what i know there is no cure for XP at the moment. There are good songs from this drama also, hope you guys enjoy it.

This has got to be one of the WORST I have seen in a long time. A total recopy of 1L without the romance, the sensitivity, the plot. The lead characters have got zero chemistry, though I like Yamada and think he is a really good actor. My favourite character turned out to the 2nd role girl playing Erika's friend. Erika is just so smug and overly self-confident in her own acting that it becames VERY ANNOYING. Like the way she keeps rolling her eyes....And she doesn't even look sick or weak at all. Never going to watch Erika's stuff again. Wasted my money buying this because of biased raters who actually give this an 8 to 10.

This drama is riding off the success of Sekai no chuushin de, ai wo sakebu and Ichi Ritoru no Namida. Hey it even stars the actors from those dramas. There have been many dramas like this involving diseases like Beautiful Life and Summer Snow just to name some more, but it doesn't make it necessarily bad. It involves a girl trying to live life to its fullest without any regrets since her time is limited. She dreams of becoming a singer and hopes to able to make it to the top. Well dont want to give everything away since all you can is just watch it and understand it. Anyways I still liked it. The last episode choked me up.

Will Yamada ever play a different role, apart from the "man-im-so-cool" good guy all the time? Yes, I did enjoy this drama and I prefer Erika in this one over 1 Liter of Tears because she just seems more nature here (and I though 1 Liter was just a bit over the top). The location is also a nice change from the city districts, as it gives it a bit of freshness that other dramas lack. But, like others have said, Yamada seems to be stuck in the same role ever since sekaachu (which i loved to bits although). I think it'll be better to see him as a villain for a change or something. But apart from its a decent drama...
9. Comments by aiscess [Rating: 5/10]
This was really passable especially if youfve seen the movie. The movie was short and sweet and it really focused on Amane Kaorufs life while the drama was just partly of that because aside from the guy being the lead, they added many other characters such as Asami who is a recording artist whom Kaoru admires and has a past with Koji. Although forming a band was nice and Kaoru also has good songs in here plus the Power Ranger scenes were cute, the ending really ruined it all. The ending in the movie was better although it was also sad, it was still nicely done compared to this.

after 1 L of Tears, I was expecting a spectacular performance by Sawajiri again... but no such thing happened. It was as if her heart was not in this drama; throughout the drama you could feel her half-heartedness and lack of effort because as long as you have seen 1LoT, you know she could give so much more. The lead stars lacked chemistry, accompanied by an even more lackluster supporting cast and story. It's still a 7 because it's better than other dramas I've seen, but Sawajiri's shine has definitely gone down in my book.
12. Comments by rikastar [Rating: 6/10]
The cast is not bad actually but the writing is quite terrible. The side plots they have to stretch it out into a full length drama are pretty pointless/do not evoke much feelings from the viewer imo. Kouji is like a block of wood, the Asami character is very unappealing and gets no sympathy from me, Sawajiri Erika brings on a little something to make Amane Kaoru feisty and likeable, which is cool. Music wise, I think the the movie and the dorama versions have their own charm, story wise, I'll just stick to the movie.
13. Comments by Jeanxi [Rating: 3/10]
Only watched 1 episode, but there was enough bad acting/dialogue to kill any possibility that I would watch the whole thing. Sawajiri Erika seems to have done an excellent job in 1 littoru no namida, but in retrospect, maybe it was 'cause it fit her personality better or something...I mean, she definitely did a horrible job in Taiyou no uta. Also, I think it would've been better if they just found another person to sing her song. She doesn't have a bad voice, but it's not good enough to make me want to listen to it =P

The actors were really good, espacially Sawajiri Erika *fan desu*
What I also really love about it are the songs, they're both really beautiful.
But I think it's wrong to compare it to 1 litre of tears that much, just because Sawajiri Erika is dying because of an incurable desease in the end. But it's still different, because Taiyou no Uta is more a love story. I still like 1LOT best, but still giving this one 10/10 because I really liked it^^

Sept 2006:I love dramas with music as main theme. This drama started out pretty good, acting was good, since the 2 leads were well known with their acting ability, even though this is just some 'teenage love story'. However, the ending was too.....rushed. It just ended at a weird time, should have cut off all the boring parts and made a better, complete ending. Nice soundtrack and theme song, just don't compare with the movie version, with different characters and settings.

im getting pretty sick with sawajiri, she can't play any other roles than sick characters, she doesn't drag the rating down though. The story itself was very touching and im actually confused if i liked this better than the movie or not, they're pretty much equally good. This was a competent drama, and I did like Sawajiri Erika when she was Aya in One Litre of Tears. However, I am tired of seeing Yamada Takiyuki getting all the good albeit-similar roles, maybe they should take a look at other rising young male actors? Overall, this was an ok drama for me. I actually prefer the movie version that was released prior to this, and I thought the YUI-Tsukamoto Takashi combi was a breath of fresh air which I liked a lot better.

Taiyou no Uta turned out to be better than I expected. Yamada Takayuki once again proved good acting skills even though he seems to always be put in the same type of characters lately.

The story was light hearted, a little twisted at some points and hard to understand at others but overall, it was enjoyable. Not a must see, but nevertheless fun to watch.

This girl does an amazing job as an actress in these kinds of rolls, sad ones. It is a very good story, sad and you can really feel the passion they have for music! I will always remember Kaoru Amane's songs, cause they're so beautiful^^. But the sad part, nothing beats her other drama 1 litre of tears, that one had even more, but this one has more love, laghter, friendship etc in it. The way she died was a little too much I thought but yeah sad!

Taiyou no uta is about this girl with a terminal illness and this shy but oh so good looking guy who falls for said girl. The two become lovers, the illness progresses... sounds familiar? I thought so too. This drama seems like yet another copy of 1Litre no namida, but I liked it anyway because the main focus isn't solely on the disease but more on Kaorus dreams and her desire to live life to the fullest.

But, after i watched this drama, i had read some article regarding this XP disease and it's really exist in our reality life...Such a pity to that person too who can't enjoy the hot weather. This story same goes to Sawajiri Erika in this drama

Somewhat draggy, with too many redundant diversions and characters. Maybe due to the rather different portrayal and characterization of Sawajiri's Kaoru in comparison to Yui's, the storyline seems somewhat more cliche and 2D. Definitely not something critically acclaimed, but probably, understandably, kept quite a fair part of its viewers interested enough.

OK this was annoying. overacted by both sawajiri erika and Yamada Takayuki, it was a dissapointing dorama as it lacked in chemistry between the characters and the acting was just cheesy and u just couldnt take it seriously..ASHAME seeing this dorama had high expectations as it followed up sawajiri erika`s previous and most famous dorama, 1 litre of tears!!!

I was enjoying that it was not a push-over kind of tear-jerker. Did not realize that she's the same girl in One Liter of Tears. Oh well, I would love to see her in a comedy/love story plot for a change. And Yamada though cute as a button is someone I would love to see in a not so brooding role. Ooh and that producer guy is definitely gorgeous! :-)

As much as I like Sawajiri Erika, I feel that she can do better in Taiyou no Uta. The plot of this series is once again about a girl with a terminal disease and Erika is once again, in a role that is bound to die in the end. The chemistry better her and Kouji (Yamada Takayuki) is somewhat lacking. Maybe it is because I expected alot more from them.

Erika played in Ichi Rittoru no Namida; loved her.
Erika plays in Taiyou no Uta; hate her.
She looked so pretty in 1RnN. ;_____; And I've now watched 2 ep's and it haven't been so good as I thought it would be. Normally I'm pretty interested about dramas like this but this was disappointment. I hope this get's better after few ep's...

Just finished watching this drama.
Many said it was a waste of time, not so good etc., but oh my god I loved it.

Is not as tear jerking as 1 liter of tears, but in the last episode IT WAS TO MUCH, you need to let it go and just let those tears out.

If you don't cry in the last episode, "YOU ARE DEAD" or simply not human.

Have to admit that I watched this because of Erika Sawajiri, and the story wasn't that good if you compared it with the movie version which had better songs and simpler storyline which worked. On it's own, the drama's oki but there were some unecessary sub-plots which dragged it down

Story is more about love, passion, and friendship. Not as depressing as some of the other doramas, but its pretty sad esp. the end. (T_T) great chemistry between casts. Great OST and great story. Kaoru Amane ga tsuyoi no hito datta. 10/10!

Taiyou no Uta is another drama about an incurable disease called XP. It teaches us about friendships and how to never give up your dream. Great music overall and the ending is so sad.

It reminds me of One Litre of Tears and, like the latter, you may need some tissues to sponge your lachrymal secretions. Don't watch this one if you like happy Walt Disney movies.
