1. I am a Japanese who grew up in America in the time [Rating: 3/10]
I am Japanese American, and I can't believe how UNREALISTIC this show was. How come the Japanese Americans in this movie is soo fluent in Japanese? Ok, I tried to think that maybe they lived in a Japanese community, but I still think unlikely. During the times w/o internet Japanese in the US really did not have much to watch on tv, etc. OK, I do speak fluent Japanese, but that is because I learned it on my own and went to Japan at 18, studied and lived there a few years. and since then I have watched Japanese tv, by subscribing to Japanese Tv. Now thanks to the internet I can keep it up by watching shows online, thank goodness!

A more correct title would have been "What Japanese think it was like to immigrate to America". This script has more holes in it than I can remember, let's hope that Nisei (or Sansei, Yonsei or Gosei) never see it.

But, some good actors did their best with what they had to work with. Kusanagai proves once again that even if he's not as popular as Kimtaku, he's every bit his equal as an actor. Also good performances from Pinko Izumi as Tomo and Kiichi Nakai as Chokichi.

Unbalanced yet interesting account which focuses mainly on WWII, A huge gap of 30 years is left out of the story between 1910 and the outbreak of the Great Pacific War.
