Once upon a Time, in a Faraway Landc

I enjoyed Nemureru Mori for the dark, modern-day fairy tale that it is: it takes the Sleeping Beauty archetype and gives it an urban-whodunit spin, setting it in 1998 Tokyo. But here the Sleeping in question is a psychological rather than a physical condition, as it is the Princessf memories that remain submerged for a certain time period, to be Awakened by the Prince at the right Moment. (But who is the Prince, pray tell? Is there even one at all?)

When stripped of its more palatable, Victorian-era coating, the Fairy Tale is no childrenfs bedtime reading. Ifm glad that Nemureru Mori feels less like Hans Christian Andersen and more like the earlier work of the Brothers Grimm, with the gore and the gloom and the, er, grimness not seen in their later (and heavily sanitized) versions. I welcome fairy tales in all their literary incarnations, in particular Angela Carterfs gThe Bloody Chamber,h a collection of retold fairy tales--dark, violent, sensuous and lushly romantic, but at times also bleak and terrifying.

The question, therefore, would be: if this is the story of Sleeping Beauty, who are the other characters? Whofs the Wicked Witch? The Fairy Godmother? The White Knight? But given the murder-mystery angle of Nemureru Mori you know that everything and everyone is immediately suspect\with the exception of Beauty, through whose eyes we watch the story unfold. Soc could it be that certain characters in Nemureru Mori are actually composites of two or more of these fairy tale figures, who in turn may (or may not) be fundamentally disparate from each other (i.e. what if the Prince turns out to be the Big Bad Wolf?)--thus rendering them more ambiguous (but more interesting)? Ifve read enough crime capers and Agatha Christie mysteries to expect the unexpected and brace for twists in the plot. You try to second-guess peoplefs motives and anticipate the telltale signs that may (or may not) Mean Something Later On, those breadcrumbs in the woods that point the Way Out. And the woods of A Sleeping Forest have this beautiful, surreal quality to them, where time and space lose their real-world sway. It truly is an enchanted place, one both tranquil and threatening, a secret dream-garden where a long-forgotten evil lurks unseen.

The starting point of our story is a Christmas Eve massacre in a picturesque little town 15 years past. Beneath the snow-coated rooftops and steeples of churches, beneath the clear voices of carolers rising through the winter air, a gruesome crime has just been committed: the cold-blooded murder of three family members. The rain has washed away all traces of the killer, all evidence of his identity. Amid the flashing police sirens and crowds of onlookers, the body bags are carted into the ambulance one by one, the child Minakofs family--dead forever. That the carnage happened at Yuletide, of all times--is inconceivable, and yet the proof of this horrific deed is incontrovertible: the red stains against the snow, the bloodied corpses, the knife left behind when the murderer fled the scene. The 12-year-old girl Minako, the sole survivor of this nightmare, retreats deep into the darkness, her spirit broken and all memories locked away inside, in a place where even she dares not go. And through it all, the statue of the Virgin Mary at the nearby church remains the lone witness to this scene, her marmoreal countenance sphinx-like in dispensing either benediction\or judgment. And so our Fairy Tale begins...

2. A DEEP DARK TWISTED DRAMA, BUT FULL OF SURPRISES [Rating: 10/10]
A really strange drama but has a whole lot of suspense to keep you guessing! Every character in this drama seriously has problems. The pace of the drama may feel a bit slow to some people because it has a lot to cover for the story, (especially in the middle parts) but it pays off in the end. And it does have its moments every now and then. Every episode also ends on a climax so you'll be eager to see the next! The story is really deep (not really a feel good drama) but it makes you think about it a lot. If you thought it was boring then you probably didn't get it. This drama would be a waste if you don't watch it till the end. I brute forced it and saw the whole series in one day. I was that hooked! It might be a little confusing at times but it'll eventually be all clear. But if you love dramas that make you think then you'll enjoy it. Definitely not a typical Kimura Takuya love drama! To me, Kimura Takuya seemed like a detective in this story. If you love suspenseful stuff then check this one out. Good casting, excellent acting, very weird and yet disturbing story but interesting. Another hit from Kimura Takuya. Personally, I didn't enjoy the whole hypnotism, hallucination, flashback scenes, the scary looking mom and what she made her son do! *Barfs* But the rest were good.

3. Dark, Intense Drama that Leaves You Anticipating f [Rating: 8/10]
I really like this drama. Normally, I would prefer to watch happy, funny shows but this one really grabbed me attention. It's different, that's for sure, and very suspenseful. I really loved the story to it and the plot in general. The end of every episode leaves you wanting more, and you don't want to stop watching.

At first, Kimura Takuya seemed kind of stalker creepy but I warmed up to him as I continued to watch the show. All the actors did a really good job in this show. It was very convincing and all of them delivered great performances.

I wasn't expecting that ending. It totally shocked and surprised me. I was literally speechless for a long time. And the fact that Minako and Naoki's relationship turned out to be different than a romantic one surprised me also. For a little while, that was also weird/nasty because of how their relationship was before she found out.

4. Excellent Murder mystery drama... [Rating: 9/10]
Another gem form Kimura Takuya. A brilliant dark drama with many twists and turns along the way. The soundtrack used for this drama is EXCELLENT... more often than not the music sent chills down my spine as it accompanies the scene almost perfectly.. Kudos to the sound director of this movie. This is my first Nakayama Miho drama and I must say I like her quite a lot!! Great acting from her and Kimura to bring out the general dark mood of the show. The mysteriousness of Minako's past really glued me to the show. Always wanted to find out who the killer was. Yusuke was great in this one as well, his looks just seems so fitting for his wierd character. This one kept me hooked from start to end and deserves a 10 for the uniqueness of the ending... I still don't quite get why it had to end this way, but that's the beauty of the drama. Highly Recommended!!~

5. Could be better [Rating: 6/10]
The pace is slow and there's no build up to the climax. I do admit that I couldn't figure out the suspense and just had to take guesses which were right in the end but I was sure it wasn't the obvious. There's a few things didn't like in the drama. 1. Why did a few characters have to die unnecessarily. 2. Why throw in a some characters like Keiichiro's mom that will leave you hanging. 3. What is up with that ending? The two can't end up together so one of them died? How did that person even die?

I'm so disappointed at that ending. It's similar to the other Kimutaku drama "The smile has left your eyes". At the least the tragedy in the end was more fitting and justified.

6. Full of suspense [Rating: 8/10]
I really liked this show for the excellent storyline as well as the way the story slowly unfolds to reveal who the murderer really is. As usual, it's always a shocker when you find out who the killer is but the suspense leading up to the climax is simply thrilling! All the little pieces come together like a jigsaw puzzle and along the way, the viewers will make their own deductions as well.
The romance bits are quite limited and is largely unfulfilled toward the end,but this show is a great drama for the gripping plot and the characters as well.
Music is okay but quite limited as only 2 songs are played throughout the entire show.

7. Okay Drama [Rating: 7/10]
Even though it was interesting, I did not think that the identity of the killer was a big surprise. After they reveal the past of the couple (the dorm scene), that's when I got it. The music was a little limited. Though I did figure out who the killer was early one, I liked the way the story pieces get put together while not completely giving a definite killer. Plus I like the little twists in the story and I loved trying to figure out what actually happened whenever a flashback happens. All in all an okay drama. (Plus the way they did the opening sequence was great. I completely missed it.)

8. Overly suspenseful! [Rating: 8/10]
As an overall dorama, Sleeping Forest wasn't badly done on the whole. The acting was fine and the storyline was quite gripping. However, the music created a constant aura of suspense, as though something was always going to happen the very next second, but that something never materializes. This was the main weakness of the show and trying to maintain a constant suspenseful atmosphere sorta knocked this dorama down from a 9 to an 8. but if you're a person looking for suspense, look no further.

its very suspenseful and thrilling to watch, Kimu taku was like a prince or a knight in shining armor!!!!

The past is indeed a part of our life, it shapes us to the person we are today and what we will be in the future. In the words of minako, it helps us avoid committing the same mistakes again, learning new ways to deal with problems or adapt to life, thus we experience growth. MInako, the female protagonist, now 27 and is about to marry a somewhat successful man feels an emptiness in her heart. She feels incomplete and unsure of who she really is due to a deeply forgotten past. She feels she cannot continue on with her life without completely knowing her true identity. Her false and buried memories was caused by a unusual treatment given to her by a doctor and initiated by her uncle who wanted Minako to start a new after witnessing the brutal murder of her family. Naoki is a complex character and is one of my favorite, well not only of his good looks =)..anyway, it confused me how this little boy who "shared" her memories and dreams to little minako, could have a very deep attachment or bond to her when these dreams and memories are their only connection. To illustrate how deep this attachment it, he guarded and protected her for 15 years form afar, patiently and anxiously waiting for the day when her memories were to uncover. This attachment/bond grew to love for naoki as he grew up. Its possible that, Naoki who has failed to pursue his own dreams of playing catch with his father, of a family gathering around the veranda etch has felt that through MInako , he can fulfill those lost and unfulfilled dreams . This can be interpreted in 2 ways. As little minako starts her new life she can fulfill these dreams or Noaki with minako can fulfill those dreams. Because Minako likes and dislikes the same things as Naoki and has the same dreams in life, Noaki found in her a perfect partner, thus a happy relationship will exist and a sure fulfillment of his dreams. Naoki (at first) wants to protect her form her past, so that his memories and dreams within her will remain and he wants to destroy kiichiro and snatch her away from him to realize these dreams. His sadness after he discovered the fact that they are siblings is justified since it somewhat symbolizes his now shattered dreams.
There is some parallelism between Kiichiro and naoki. Both of they followed and guarded Minako all through these many years, both sees her an important symbol of their dreams. It maybe concluded that one of kiichiro's dreams was to be with Kimiko Since this dream can't be realized (because of kokubuku) he murders kimiko to be able to make her his. Now some of the questions bugging my head is that 1.why did n't he kill Minako, 2. why did he continue to stay by her side knowing that someday she may remember? 3. at the ending, why didn't he just kill . It seems like , through the existence of minako he is able to preserve his dream. I think he loves her becuase she has become a symbol of the fufilled dream. anyway. It is obvious that kiichiro experience guilt or else he wouldn't have aske minako to kill himself at the end. He didn't kill himself because if he did then the murder of kimiko was meaningless.

My opinion on this, while very positive, is sort of the reverse of the general consensus. Like many I decided to watch this because of the writer, but not because of Koori no Sekai (which at the time of writing this I have not seen, but it will be the next thing I watch), but rather because of Aoi Tori, which I consider to be the best drama ever made. I am really not a fan of murder/mystery/suspense type of dramas so this was not all that enjoyable to me overall, but what I actually liked, contrary to most other people, was the ending. I admit it seemed to come out of left field, and felt very WTF, but considering the two main characters relationship, anything else would have been either a let down because they were clearly in love, or disturbing to most peoples sensibilities. Furthermore it does fit in with the dark and disturbing mood of this drama.

Between this and Aoi Tori it is clear to me that this writer had a very active and different imagination. An interesting point, for people who don't know, is that this writer actually ended up committing suicide (by hanging I believe). If you realize that while watching, it definitely puts a different spin on his work, and makes you realize that the strange and dark nature of his work was obviously a very real and personal matter.

I'm a bit confused with this dorama. I loved the characters and acting, and the dark atmosphere too. All characters, even the side ones, were very well explained, with their own fears and motivations, but always leaving something in the shadows of mistery. I hadn't seen this show until now because I always thought it was a romance drama, but it's more a suspense/mistery drama than anything. The plot is full of turns and twists and by the end I was a little tired of so many surprises and not knowing where everything was leading to, but I was really shocked when the real murderer was (finally!!) discovered. It is a slow, dark, long dorama with an ending that, seriously, was not needed. Minako has such bad luck! At first the story really hooked me up but by the end I was like... "at last!". I suppose I had big expectations. Anyway it is a must see for all dorama lovers.

The same people who produced "Koori No Sekai, The Ice World" later, this is a great mystery drama laced with a sad love story between two leads. It keeps you guessing who is the real bad guy, creepy and fascinating to the end. Beautiful memorable soundtrack, especially the classical pieces! Good story line but it was a little slow at the beginning. The ending is vague/not clear! I believe something is missing at the end of this dorama. I think the original book is a little bit different. Although this was written by the same writer as the "Ice World", I like the other one a lot better. This one is a little bit on the dark side.

The show seemed like a collection of mystery novels mixed together in a hat and blown into the wind without any artistic inspiration. The acting was strange and reminded me of mimes. Also, Kimura, although looking great, seemed lost in his acting. One could just feel how uncomfortable he was with the role. So, my overall impression is that there was a lot of effort put into this drama with will please a good proportion of the audience, the base of the story is fascinating, especially the hypnosis/memory subplot, but the talent and the majic touch to the drama's story, acting, and directing was missing.

The first two episodes grab your attention and put you in the mood for a great mysterious drama! And then in the third one, you begin to wonder what the point of the story is anymore? Half way into the 12 episodes, you really question whether the drama is ever going to shine light on ANYTHING. The ending is the typical "I didn't expect this person to be the murderer, therefore he obviously must be the murderer!" kind of ending. Kimura Takuya is, yet again, the too cool badass boy. Could've been better, the story is too slow and the cliffhangers are annoying moreso than thrilling.

I love this drama. Kimura Takuya as Ito Naoki is very darkly sexy and attractive. He looks very good with his long hair here. In every episodes, the secret revealed itself and proposed more questions. I was hooked. Jinnai Takanori and Nakamura Toru gave solid performances.

Another reason I love this drama is its atmosphere. It's scary and dreamy.
I'd give this 9 because it was boring at the first few episodes, but still, a great drama.
It's sad that we can't watch these kind of dramas anymore after Nozawa Hisashi died.

If half scores were available, I would give his 9 1/2. I loved Sleeping Forest. Nakayama Miho is absolutely enchanting. From episode 1 I was drawn into the mystery and I kept watching to discover the answers to so many questions. The series always had a quirky feel to it. Eccentric. I liked that. Kimura Takuya was wonderful, as always. My only regret is the confusing ending, which is why I would dock half a point from the rating. In the end, was it all for nothing?

Woah, this dorama is really powerful! Wow, the atmosphere! Quite a few bone-chilling scenes, making it a perfect fit for these scorching summer nights...:) Brilliantly directed (these guys studied Hitchcock and Dario Argento proficiently, imho), mostly very well scripted and acted (I just think Jinnai Takanori's performance was a bit over the top, and there's a little too much darkness for my taste - hence the 9/10 instead of a full 10/10)

A slow but suspenseful drama. Central theme is to face one's past... whether it's a set of happy or sad memories. Life can proceed despite not knowing our past but we are what we are because of it. Other themes include obsession of love and family-type love. The plot is intricately linked with the characters involved. Theme song is good and well-made/strong opening sequence. Would recommend if you have the patience!

Not a bad mystery dorama but I think they overdid the suspense with this one. Particularly with fast-paced soundtrack, the dorama seemed to be on edge almost the whole way through. The story was certainly well done with the constant suspense dominating the show. The acting by Miho, Takuya, Toru and the rest of the cast wasn't bad and if you're a fan of mysteries or any of the cast, this dorama shouldn't be missed.

Creepy and slow-moving at first but evolves into a suspenseful roller coaster ride that keeps the viewers at the edge of their seats. This is not the type of drama to watch casually as the material is rather dark and heavy. All the cast members did a masterful job portraying their respective roles. Overall a solid suspense/mystery that should appeal to the thinking audience looking for more than just a sappy romance.

Minako is a young woman who has it all - a lovely finance and a bright future. But does she really? Of course not - after meeting a young man played by Kimutaku (my least favourite idol) her world crumbles. Kimu's performance is actually very good - he gives a great performance as the angry hurt man from Minako's past. Expect a few plotholes and unlikley events in this otherwise neat dark mystery drama.

Although I'm not a big fan of this type of j-drama (suspense/detective), I have to say that this one was stunningly good. It captured me from the first minute and didn't let go until the very end. The plot's brilliant & meticulous in every detail & it's so much more than just a captivating murder case. In terms of j-drama I'll even use the word masterpiece. Highly recommended

A pretty dark and suspenseful drama. I feel really sad for Naoki, from the time when he was a kid and till the end, he was really devoted to and living his life for Minako. It's pretty easy to guess who the killer is by the middle episodes, but there are still twists thrown in towards the end. At times I feel it's a bit slow but on the other hand I think it adds suspense.

Mystery drama written before Koori no Seikai by the same director. Nakayama Miho stars as a loving fiance who for some reason seems to have almost no memories of her past. While going through some old stuff, she stumbles across a love letter written by a boy she never met 15 yrs ago (Kimura Takuya)and on a whim decides to meet him. Things get interesting from there...

Takuya shows his greatest performance yet in this dorama.. yes, very gothic kinda story but I like it..ALL of em are excellent here! fm Miho Nakayama(who is disarmingly beautiful..) to Nakamaru Toru and Yusuke Santamaria..I cd never forget Takuya's expression when he returned fm police after the death of his best friend..that's one in a million..!!

Ok, this is a very depressing dorama! But i really enjoyed it! 2 thumbs up for Takuya's acting as Naoki Ito! No wonder this is one of his top 5 dorama. Your heart will totally go out to him. The whole storyline is full of suspense thriller and it's quite twisted! It'll keep you at the edge of your seat! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Liked Mohi's role, shes gorgeous. This show has this very deep meaning which i will prolly never ever understand. The ending was really surprising, i never expected that he was actually the murderer and did all the stuff to Minako. I was really upset about the ending though... i just dont understand, why must he die ???

Very good dark twisty drama until you start thinking about the plot, and then the actions of some of the cast make no sense whatsoever. The answer to the mystery of the connection between the two leads was particularly satisfying and clever, however. Nakayama Miho was simply stunning, I could watch her all day.

I thought I would hate this. Imagine my surprise when I found this was the best drama ever. I liked Kimura being the anti-hero. Loved Santamaria, haven't seen any of his acting before. Loved the part of the fiancee. A little too good to be true he was! If you want a scary, mysterious drama, watch this one!

I'm not particularly impressed with the drama. I will say that the plot is pretty interesting, though sometimes I feel that the twists and turns are just TOO MUCH. It was a cast of renowned actors, yet no one's acting really stood out or really impressed me... It was at best mediocre.

Tragic but gripping. Takuya was creepy here. The story captivated me with its many twists and turns. There was a good parallelism with the love story between Takuya, Keito and Yuri AND Kokobu, Kiichiro and Minami. I just felt that there was no need for that kind of ending.

Love all but the ending. I do think it is worth watching though, probably one of the best fit drama's for me. I was able to guess who the killer was from the third episode or so, butI'm not sure how I guessed it. Overalll this drama is a must see with outstanding acting.

Suspense dorama. So wellknown and had so many good ratings, yet personally I didn't think it was that good. It was kinda boring. It did, however, got me and my sister wondering "who did it" kinda deal. And the ending sucks -- probably realistic but unacceptable.

This drama isn't boring at all, it's very suspenseful, has a lot of twists and turns. I really enjoyed watching each and every epsiode. Kimu taku as always, is handsome and cool!!! He did a great performance, the other actors did a great performance as well. .....I was a bit diasappointed at the end, sbecause I want Naoki to live on and have a happy life ....

A meticulous plot. Great suspense and heartbreaking ending. Music and photography also excellent. Opening credits poetic, which were echoed in the final end. For Takuya fans-----he was so so .....oh, I do not know what words to describe him........majestic, stunning, captivating, divinely charming !! A must for his fans.

Ito Naoki. He makes my heart bleed for him. He lived his life for someone else, and he din ask for anything in return. He don't mind being misunderstood, as long as his love is safe and sound. That's all he askd for. It is so heartbreaking, that scene of Naoki telling Keita how he has always loved her from afar since young.

One of the most suspenseful dramas I've ever seen. I was really glued to it, wanting to see the next episode after next. It has a great cast, excellent acting. Nice choice of music to fit the drama. And the story will keep you guessing. I even enjoyed watching the whole series for the 2nd time with a friend.

Awesome! This jdorama will keep you in suspense what will happen to the 11th episode XD It is not really hard to guess how it will end (whos the culprit...). After the 5. episode everyone can tell the outcome, therefore i couldnt help but watch. The end was nice and touching.

One of my favourite suspense dramas. Great acting from Takuya as Ito Naoki whose life was centred around Minako...a very sad but befitting ending....fans of Takuya should definitely watch this suspense-filled drama that keeps u guessing till the end

a series that includes nakayama miho, nakamura toru and kimutaku~~ wow! three of my faves actors in one series. dark and mysterious (including the music), but definitely worth the time to watch for the twists and turns!

Start out slow but with a story that both gripping and poignant at the same time, you find yourself gasping for air during later episodes wondering who is the murderer and what is his real motives.

I think this one alot even though I am only at episode 5 right now. The chemistry between Minako and Naoki is warm and endearing. Kiichiro is cute too. I like the suspense and mystery.
