1. So Good, until the End. Bleh. [Rating: 7/10]
Ugh.

I usually pride myself in the fact that I have an open mind and I can usually understand why directors/writers make the choices they do when dealing with characters, plot, and storyline.

I must have been really close-minded when watching this drama. It started off great. I normally enjoy Oda Yuji, and after I got over the initial shock of watching a drama older than Ifm used to, I started to enjoy the performances by the other artistes – especially that of Suzuki Honami. Shefs managed to portray one of the most memorable characters Ifve come across in my drama-watching career. She instantly drew me in and her characterfs relationship with Odafs really sparked my interest. This drama had a great balance between romance, comedy, and angst. I like how it dealt with mature feelings and circumstances. Up until perhaps the eighth episode everything was going smoothly, until I slowly began to realize that Oda was slowly turning into a jerk and that the emotional rise given by the story was false and cruel. The way the drama ended completely shattered my perfect ending.

To be fair, it wasnft necessarily a horrendous ending. But it wasnft the ending that I wanted and for some reason I canft get over this. Tokyo Love Story is a great drama until the end, which completely ruins it for all Akana-fans. Bah.

O, and Arimori Narimi was a great peeve of mine. As was Eguchifs hair. But Arimori moreso. There.

2. Golden Drama During Golden Age [Rating: 10/10]
We can now look back to the 90's as the golden age for Japanese doramas: Tokyo Love Story, Long Vacation, 101st Marriage Proposal, etc...

The story is about a 5-way relationship involving multiple break-ups and making ups between 5 different people. I would not classify the conversation nor the plot as especially deep or meaningful; however, the actress made the difference. Honami Suzuki became a house-hold name from her portrayal of a cheerful but sad, strong but weak, selfless and selfish girl. I can't but stop crying watching the multiple love stories involved.

The story is almost perfect, but also has some major plot holes (e.g. for example, surely, Kanchi would have a chance to see Rita again before her real move to LA even though he missed the train)... Watch this drama with your heart, not with your brain.

There are a few other things I don't quite understand. I certainly would have not reacted like the people in the drama did, but then my life would not be interesting enough to be made a story :-)

True love eventually will find each other; true love conquers all.

3. This is what dorama is all about [Rating: 10/10]
I tend to like dorama series in late 90s to early 00s the most, but Tokyo Love Story was very enjoyable for me.
Suzuki Honami was incredible, it's impossible to not like her cheerful and energetic character. She's criminally cute!
Even Oda Yuuji's acting was decent.

There were just so many great memorable scenes in this series and I really connected with Rika that it made me cry watching the final episode with all those flashbacks.

I would've liked to see Rika and Kanchi get together in the end, but I guess it's all about lost opportunities and it shows that timing is everything in romance. Or maybe I'm just too spoiled with happy endings in all the recent dorama series.
Still, the ending was deep and satisfying in its own way. This series is truly a masterpiece, and I'll never forget it.

Serious renai dorama seemed to just disappear after 2003 or 2004. I hope they'll make them again one day .

4. Not even close [Rating: 7/10]
I watched this because people who wrote in the LOVE GENERATION section said this was the original one, the classic drama where the writers copied the story from, well, I don't think so, It was a completely different story, can't predict what would happen next, I was even assuming the story was like Love Generation, and started guessing what's gonna happen next but I was always wrong no similarities not even close, nothing similar between the two, except maybe that Rika Akana and Riko Usuegi(LG) are both cheerful persons. Good in some parts, boring in some, bad and repetetive on some. It's like going over and over again over mindless shallow things. Still, I kinda love the character of Suzuki Honami. Don't like the male character , ending sucks, not something that can keep you watching or remember forever. Good acting and good theme song though. So I give it a B-

Last night I would've given this a 3-5 but I slept on it (badly) after ep. 7 and after watching ep. 8, 9 etc I'm looking at it with a more mature eye. I watch a lot of these JDrama's because they give me what I want from life and so rarely get - perfection. Regardless I won't give any spoiler.... but I do love Rika. Her sweetness can't be tarnished. And ironically I even think Mikami is an OK guy at this point. Boy did my opinions change about him (and Kanji, though I don't hate him). I think I'll read the spoilers (lightly) for my next few JDrama to make sure I pick the kind I have to have. Because while beautiful in many ways, this one wasn't it for me. I can't take that kind of plot. It's too much like my own life. Which isn't the worst; I'd just like it to be a little more like a happy dream...

6. The CLASSIC romance drama... [Rating: 10/10]
This is seriously good. I was a bit unsure at first because of the age of the drama, but now I see why it is revered by all. IMO, this is the storyline inspiration for the spectacularly successful Love Generation, as a lot of similarities can be seen. SUPERB acting by Suzuki Honami as Rika in this drama, converting me into an instant fan. She is SOOO cute and vibrant in the show, always keeping her head up and never upset for more than a while. I really felt for her throughout the show, because to matter how hard she tried, Kanchi (Oda Yuji) never really warmed to her. Moreover, he was a complete jerk to her at times.. The theme song for the show was really brilliant as well as it suited the drama down to the T.

All in all, an excellent drama and a must for all to enjoy.

7. CLASSIC [Rating: 9/10]
I had always heard this was considered to be of the origin of the big time japanese dorama, and I believe it. I thought it was a great, original plot, great theme music, classic. I liked the Rika and Kanji characters (I think went thru a lot of the problems any modern day couple would go thru). Obviously, she was acting out of insecurity in trying to manipulate everything they were doing as a couple. If the Kanji had any maturity he would have set some kind of guidelines for there working relationship to try work out there problems. But, instead drops the vivacious , personable lady for a woman that had the personality of a goldfish. But I still would strongly recommend it even though its an older production.

This is a great drama i have ever seen.although Rika gave her whole heart to love Kanji, and she always had the sweet spirit to this man. but Kanji's first love is his high school sweet heart not Rika. so at the end he turn out to break up with Rika. i did not know why Kanji was so apathetic and so cold to a woman so in love with him and help him all the times(when he is in need). may be the fact of life is like this,
the fact of life is socratic irony, the sweet and lovely Rika did not have good luck to have her love one with her, her love for Kanju is so strongly keep in the depth of her heart, for she loved him with so hard and faithful way.

I finally managed to watch this drama having wanted to see it for years. The plot was more original than I expected. Suzuki Honami's character is a bit irritating/fake at times, but her acting is brilliant. On the other hand, Oda Yuji's acting was downright pathetic with a perennial frown on his face.
But the last few episodes were wonderful to watch and the ending is just superb and touching.
And what can I say about the theme song by Oda Kazumasa, I could watch a drama just to hear his song play!

Just a incredable Dorama full of feeling and emotions.

Rika is so heartwarming, She left such a big impact on me I will never forget.
I would say Rika is 99% of the focus in the Dorama. Scenes without her is just a waste of time.

The Ending is a little dissapointing, almost jerked a tear out of me, and I am a Man.

It's on of my favourite dorama, and I think it's the saddest dorama I've ever watched. I love Rika Akana character so much (well, I'm also one of Honami Suzuki's fans). Rika is a cheerful and energetic young woman. Until now, I still don't understand why she couldn't end up with Kanchi. It's too bad. But that what makes Tokyo Love Story interesting.

After hearing so much about this supposedly 'classic drama', I watched it with high expectations. Boy, was I let down. What a tepid love story with unlikeable characters that made me feel like killing them all. Oda Yuji's character is such a wishy washy man who doesn't deserve a spirited woman like Rika. He and Satomi should just get together already from day one and spare others the pain.

When I began to watch doramas in the distant 2004, I had already read that Tokyo Love Story (1991) could be the best doramas of 90's, in that moment it was difficult to believe after having started this long way of japanese tv shows with Long Vacation (1996), in my opinion one of the best ever. But now I have the opportunity to check how good TLS is.
The cast was so promising, Oda Yuji (Last Christmas - 2004), Suzuki Honami (News no Onna - 1998), Eguchi Yosuke (101 Kaime no Puropozu - 1991) and Arimori Narimi (eeto....), however this dorama has two parts, the beginning is quite simple. Im not saying it is not interesting, it is, but the way to explain it is horrible. However, from the episode 4 or 5 the plot improved a lot, so alongside with the main characters, the story grow up with them. Getting finally one of the best doramas to enjoy, even for being impossible to stop watching it.
The performance of Oda, what can I say?, it's the same of Last Christmas, it's like he doesn't act in another way, dull characters. And I could say the same about Arimori's character, quite boring. About Eguchi, his performance here has nothing to do with the other hit dorama of the same year, 101 Kaime no Puropozu. Here it's so plain and boring like the rest of the cast. But not all is bad, the only one I save is Suzuki Honami, her role as Rika is the light in the darkness of this dorama, it's the main reason to keep watching the show from the 1st episode. Further to this, although the whole of the dorama is not perfect, making me keeping thinking that Long Vacation is better, I don't have any doubt that its ending and Rika character make TLS unforgettable forever.
Just as curiosity, it looks like this dorama would have been used as inspiration for Last Christmas, like a new version TLS 2.0, after watching both, I think TLS is even a little bit better. By the way, 10 points for the opening theme: Love Story wa Totsuzen ni

Well, majority of the people agree that this is truly a classic. I'm a guy and this drama seriously made me cry, quite often! (Mostly for Rika). And I'm the type who hates those really cheesy type dramas but this isn't. The story, the music (especially the theme song), and the characters are excellent! It really is a sad story, not to mention the ending! It was a huge hit back then and I still enjoy watching it today (even though it's been more than 10 years!). The drama may feel a little out dated to young viewers. Especially since not a single cell phone appear in the entire drama! Technology sure advanced... But anyways, it's nice looking back how it was then. All you youngsters who think Good Luck or dramas like Gokusen is better... Ha!!! The people who gave this drama a low score are most likely the ones who think those types of dramas are the best. So yeah, what the hell do they know? Another factor someone might not like it, could be that they just don't understand Japanese, and didn't get much out of some crappy fan-made subtitles? Other than that, I really can't understand why anyone would give this drama a low score. Every episode made me want to see the next. Riko's character was great, never really cared for a character as much as hers. I could really feel for Rika when she felt sad (especially on the train scene). This is one of the best and saddest drama ever, in my opinion. And like I said, I'm sure most, (with some heart and good taste in dramas) would definitely agree as well.

this dorama was such a much talked about legend in dorama history that it forced me to buy and have a look at it for myself.kinda frustrating at first for me, maybe because of there were so many annoying characters in here.don't get me wrong but i am one of suzuki honami admirers for her work in 'news no onna' but i somehow found her character as akana rika in here a bit annoying.maybe because i have issues with nagging and hyperactive, immature girls.sorry to say but her character here didn't impress me much.and another pity for arimori narimi for her kawaisou role here because i'm a person with no such kind heart to care about her heartbreak.her character here was really pissing me off.maybe this means that she's a good actress to fill me with that kind of hatred and taking-side effects;her character was meant to do, i dunno..maybe i guess.but thanks for oda yuji for saving the day cause i found him really cute and charming here.he gave a strong performance here and he's the actor i'll look forward to in the future.however,my main problem with this dorama was the time changing factor.well, this dorama was such a hit back in 1991 but i only watched it in 2003.i'm a such a modernisation oriented girl watching this kind of old dorama, i found the way they dressed and their attitude somewhat peculiar and hilarious.this kinda spoiled my evening for the romantic rabu story.

I watched this with the pretense that it was a happy romantic series. Boy, was I wrong. The ending scene made me tear up.

As for the rest of the series, it was pretty good. Rena Asaka's character stands out amongst the others even in comparison to other jdoramas for her sincerity and thoughtfulness whenever it came to Nagao. She took the character and script and brought it to a another degree. However, this also was a bit of a disadvantage for the other actors and actresses because their acting just didn't seem as effective.

The story was written very well, different from the stereotypical love story. It's really touching (at least Rena Asaka's story is) though there are some draggy parts. There were some things that happened in the drama that I felt were rather abrupt, but that didn't ruin the mood of the story completely.

It's considered a classic but one that has aged badly. For some reason it took me circa 12 years to watch - the blurbs about the story never really appealed to me, but two weeks without internet made me revisit my back catalogue. The passiveness of some of the main characters is hard to stomach in 2017, even if you live in Japan. But it delivers in portraying weak, sneaky people wonderfully - though surely that wasn't the goal. You know something is wrong when the promiscuous bad boy (Minami) turns out to be the only character you kind of respect.

Awful!!! A ridiculous story of not one but TWO love triangles. Two guys love one girl but she only loves the bad boy of the two and finally after 5 years of waiting, they both get together only to find out that it won't work. So despite the fact that the other guy already had a girlfriend, she decides to steal him now that she's got no one else. And how indecisive can guys get? Decide who you like and get on with your lives! I can't believe people think this is a classic. It's a crappy drama with a crappy ending. What a waste of my time!

This is a highly entertaining drama, and a classic among j-dorama lovers. I wish I could give it a 10 - because quite often it feels like it's worth a 10 - but I just can't. The main characters suffer too much from the syndrome that is all too familiar in the drama-world, namely that they are morons. This becomes evident in the last 3-4 episodes, and I found myself thinking "oh come on, give me a break, this can't be happening!" all too often. It's still a good drama though, and well worth watching!

This has got to be one of the BEST dramas in Japanese drama history. Top caliber actors, great script, great director - what more can you ask for!? The plot's that good that it definitely hits home. I guess a lot of people can actually relate to this drama because it's based more on reality than fiction (well, you know, the "Notting Hill" type). It was an okay drama. My friends used to cry over this drama so much, but that was more than five y years ago. Now if you watch this story, it barely touches any nerve because the story has been played out so much. First I really liked the girl Riko, but in the end I found her a bit annoying with her over-hyperness. The other girl (Satomijan? I think) appeared annoying to me from the beginning to end. I can't stand girls who are too scared to express themselves.

It's a classic cultural phenomenon, also the drama that convinced me that Yuji is one of the awesomest there is. More or less typical love story, I suppose some may call this. But the overall production, the script, the BGM and OST, the casting... This drama is truly top-notch and I could go on and on gushing about it. The leads totally delivered a smacking great performcance. This is one I'll always remember for a very long time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Can understand that it was one of the best Japanese dramas of all time but I honestly thought it was good at best. But then I can see some resemblance to Love Generation (I know.. this drama insipired Love Generation). The female lead was able to show a range of emotions where as the male was alright. I would still recommend this romantic drama though... takes a stand in showing how love can remain after a romantic relationship.

I didn't like the ending at first, but now that I think of it, I think the ending made this drama more beautiful and unforgettable. Sometimes, love is beautiful because it is transient.
Eguchi Yosuke's hair was funny..haha

First J.drama I had. Fell in love with the bubbling character played by Suzuki Honami She is so lovable, caring and thoughful towards Oda Yuji's character as 'Kanji' and yet he chose to be with his 'childhood sweetheart'. Maybe guys just prefer demure and 'looked easily hurt' woman as their wife in order for them to display their egoistic traits. Nonetheless, great show and theme songs.

A must-wtach Japanese drama. Both the comic strips and the tv-series are too famous to be overlooked. And people will always remember the 4 main characters.

Too bad I was too young when I watched it. I believe I couldn't really understand 'love' then. So..it didn't really touch me much at that time.

ps- the theme song IS great, nonetheless, I can still remember its melody NOW!!!

If I read the plot now, I'd probably think that it is so cheesy and lame. But when I watched this, I was really drawn into the story and it is one of my favourite love stories of all time, even if the ending is not something I would have wanted. I really love the character Rika -> it became a name I'd incorporate into screen names even till today. Suzuki Honami was really great here.

Tokyo love story is, in my opinion, not mainly a lovestory but a story about big city life including love, friendship, loneliness, confusion etc. The cast could've been better (not referring to Suzuki Honami, she was great) & the hideous fashion of the 80's is just regrettable but apart from that, it's terrific & I recommend every fan of j-drama to watch this classic piece.

The show had only like....3-4 actors only? I mean those four had to be in like love-square and that's it, no other people in tokyo??? one of the guys had to be with either one of the girls and that's it?? and they switch around?? the story really dragged on and it killed me to watch the whole show. The best thing about it was its ending, which was surprising.

Honestly, I've watched this a *long* time ago so I can't exactly remember what happened. :P I thought Suzuki Honami's character was a bit clingy but I started to feel sorry for her as the story went on. Might have even sympathized with her at some point. This is considered a classic in dorama history, so maybe it's a good idea to take a look at this.

I like this Drama especially because of the story and esp. the ending being much closer to reality than most other romantic dramas. Despite of being produced as early as '91 it was refreshing to watch. The main character's hesitating attitude is somewhat painful to watch, but I can understand him.
EDIT: One point up for story complexity.

AWESOME!!! The roles are perfectly casted and the emotions are played very well. Oda Yuji and Suzuki Honami are amazing. Don't know if i should be happy about the end or not, nevertheless it is very atypical. The title song is one of the best ever and it fits perfectly. This is definitely a masterpiece about a love story in Tokyo^^.

A great 5 ways (involved 5 characters) love story with a sad ending. Suzuki Honami was the spark of the show and she was great. You cannot help it but fall in love with her character. As a fan, you would like to see a different ending though. This is also voted as one of the top 10 most memorable dorama. Classic, classic!!!

90s Japanese dramas really knew what they were doing. The story is a classic friend-at-first-but-soon-want-to-be-your-girlfriend one, but because of the basic nature and the cute twists, you really like it. Though I have to say the ending wasn't what I wanted...but it made it work somehow.

one of the all time great doramas...Rika set a standard for drama heroines that only Minami (LV) and Riko (LG) have come close to matching...and Riko is basically a recycled version of Rika...can still hear her calling out Kanchi's name, and I saw this thing years ago

Because of its age, the fashion was horrible, I really couldn't stand it. Not only the clothes, but also their hair styles and Eguchi Yosuke's glasses...ugh. Memorable ending tho. Maybe could've been a good drama if not for the bad fashion trend at the time ^^|||

This is a one classic drama.. I watched this way few years back and kinda forget the whole story but I remember the story is kinda nice. Too bad Kanji didn't get together with Rika.. All I remember is that Rika was a very energetic and cheerful and very cute! :D

It's funny to see how japanese fashion was in 1990!! So funny and dasai!!! When you have laught enough about it you face the reality and the reality is that this dorama is boring. But it's a myth among all japanese dorama so I guess I can't complain anymore!

this is a really well made love triangle story in which the characters are not overshadowed by their looks, which made it more compelling. this is more geared towards young adults and less for teens. only those that have never experienced will find this series boring and meaningless.

The first dorama i ever watched and fell in love with dorama ever since. Very good story and love the characters too. Honami Suzuki and Oda Yuji's acting are very good in this dorama.

To me, this is the mother of all Japanese drama (not counting oldies like Oshin). The leads played their roles so well that you'd wish for a sequel to this drama.
