Outline of Story 1 "Yotsuya Kaidan"
There are all kinds of people living in the back street tenement houses in old Edo. One of them is Ashiya Dosan, the descendant of an Onmyoji who made a name for himself back in the Heian period. Unfortunately, unlike his forefathers, Dosan hasn't made much of a living off the fortune telling and amulet peddling that he does.
One day, Dosan finds a slaughtered body along the edge of a pond in Yotsuya. It is the body of Iori Tamiya, the father-in-law of Iuemon Tamiya. Deeply saddened by the violent murder of her father, the enraged wife of Iuemon, Oiwa, begs her husband to seek revenge. Iuemon tells her "Your parents are just like my own," but in reality, he has no intention of doing anything. In fact, the entire reason that he married into the family 3 years ago was to get away from life as a samurai.
Kihei, Iuemon's boss had a mistress by the name of Okoto. In order to deceive his wife, who is crazed with jealousy, Kihei asks Iuemon to take Okoto as his bride. Knowing that Oiwa and her father Iori would get in the way of this, Iuemon takes the life of Iori.
Oiwa runs away from home with the help of Takuetsu, a masseur who is a family friend. Takuestu tries to take advantage of her, but she refuses. This prompts him to tell her that "Your husband sold you to me for 5 ryo." After hearing this, Oiwa runs back to her family's estate, and waiting there is her ex-husband Iuemon, who introduces his "new wife" to her. Takuetsu who had chased after Oiwa tells Iuemon that "she is mine now because you sold her to me." Baffled by this, Oiwa runs away. Later she finds herself at the lake, and throws herself in...
The scene then switches to the Tamiya estate...suddenly it begins to thunder and the voice of a weeping woman can be heard. It is Oiwa. She tells Iuemon "I love you, and couldn't die because I'm in too much pain and lonely without you. Please let me stay by your side." Iuemon then takes her in. As she lies in bed sick, Kihei gives poison to Iuemon and tells him to "finish her off." Iuemon begins giving her the "medicine." After that, Takuetsu comes to see her with medicine in hand. Oiwa refuses to take his medicine. This makes Takuetsu feel miserable, so he tells her the truth about who really killed her father.
A short while afterwards, Iuemon comes to see how the poison is taking effect. What he finds is Oiwa with only half a face. "You killed my father, and now me...but I still care for you." Hearing this, Iuemon stabs her with his sword and runs away, but she still chases after him. Iuemon pulls out his sword to stab her again but this time accidentally stabs Takuetsu. After running into Dosan on the street, Iuemon gives him money and asks him to take him in. It doesn't matter where he runs to though, because the now dead Oiwa, continues to chase after him.
Next Iuemon runs to Kihei's estate, and uses his sword on Kihei and Okoto. He then cuts his own throat. Oiwa, now looking more beautiful than ever, gently strokes the body of the deceased Iuemon.

It's absolutely good. Not all from the story ended with tragic ending, it also ended with happy ending (full of surprise). The stories were saying to the audience to do good things because if not then something bad can happens to them (scary....). Sometimes, the story could make me cry (means really touching). The soundtrack is good. SHOULD WATCH IT GUYS!

episodes are pretty predictable after a while, mostly no bite, a pity as they have some good actors. a surprising turn from nakamura toru. can never decide if this guy is a good actor or not. for eg. he is quite effective here as the loving but lonely husband whose dead wife haunts him to comedic effect. then there's him in 2001's unloved, stiff and wooden as a washboard. u just know he hasn't a clue what the character's about. very reminiscent of his early acting in 1988's memories of you. but back then, u think perhaps its a case of being still new and young to acting. so good or bad actor? don't know, maybe just not a natural one.

I read comments before about how it's not scary although it claims to be. Sure, this isn't a horror like the ring saga but rather a drama about classical Japanese horror stories. They're pretty much like Western fairy tales and some of them are pretty well-known (Yuki Onna for example). So... Nothing really new, just the stuff that worked for centuries. I love kaidan anyway, so this certainly worked for me. Plus, as a bonus I got loads of actors I happen to like. Heh xD

Japanese ghost legend dorama. Despite its title, most of the stories are not scary, but it was so good to watch a totally different dorama about Japanese folklore. Many good actors appear in this totally different dorama. Onmyoji character is funny and wise at the same time; I loved this character. The last episode scene was a very good idea from my point of view. This dorama just makes me want to learn more about Japanese folklore, it was really enjoyable.

One probably wont be scared while watching Kaidan Hyaku Shosetsu... But it has some pretty good sad stories and others that r really heartwarming.... I really enjoyed the last story (the one 'bout the "yuki no hana") and the ending was really nice...
BtW.. for those who r watching only the episode 'cause of Kobozuka... imo the "werewolf" story was the worst one...
IMO the best story definetly is "Ubasuteyama"... Its really sad!!!

NIce!! Some parts were scary.......BUT NICE!! LOL. SOme parts were super fake like the warewolf part....the warewolf looks as if it's furs were just stuck onto it's skin with glue.^^" but since the warewolf was kubozuke yusuke......i didn't mind lor... :3

I only got to watch Yousuke Kubozuka's episode.. the one where he becomes a werewolf or something. LOL. I didn't really get to follow this series.. most of the epis just seem to involve a long-haired woman dressed in white. (o.O)

Every storyline brought me back 100 years in time, i can say it's impressive that the characters really put themselves into their roles...and every episode has a different point of view to be projected.

Best to watch these alone late at night with the lights off for atmosphere. Unfortunately the stories qualities do go down a bit as the series continues.

I liked the theme of revenge, retribution and forgiveness. The ghosts are fierce but it's the humans who did wrong, that's why they are haunted by them.

wow... this drama really great... I can know the old japan by watching this dorama... a great horror story...or should I say, horror tales?

Most of the stories aren't really scary unless the concept of ghosts and spirits give you goosebumps. I like the third story best.

I think the Romanization of the title is wrong. It's Kaidan Hyaku Monogatari.
Also, I have 11 episodes of this show.

Not the worst thing I've ever seen, but let's put it this way; I didn't finish all of the episodes.
