Synopsis
Kai Yuuki (Satoshi Tsumabuki) is in his senior year at university studying social welfare psychology. At present, he is in the middle of job-hunting season. He is finding it difficult with no job offers so far.
One day, he meets a girl who is playing violin in the campus. She is Sae Hagio (Kou Shibasaki). In marked contrast to her beautiful tone and attractive looks, her personality is somewhat impertinent. And to top it off, she communicates through very vulgar sign language.
Four years ago, she lost the most important thing for a violinist - her hearing. As a result Sae closed off her inner self from the outside world.
Kai finds himself on a date with Sae, in place of his best friend. Unexpectedly, he comes into contact with Sae's private side.
Love, job-hunting, friendship... Setting a campus in spring as a dorama`s backdrop, it's the start of a glittering youth drama.

1. Don't live life alone... [Rating: 10/10]
Absolutely brilliant. Finished this in 2 days, and I haven't been so addicted to a drama in a long time. I'm usually not a great Shibasaki Kou fan, but she was really good in the film as the extremely talented but unfortunately deaf Sae. Tsumabuki also did a great job as Kai, the patient guy willing to bear with Sae's hot temper and shortcomings.

This drama's major plus is very very good and addictive storyline. Always want to make you watch the next episode without taking a break. Really makes you think that wanting to handle all your grief by yourself and to face the world alone maybe isn't the best choice that one can make in life... Also makes us feel how vulnerable we can be when we become different form the rest of the world...

Highly Recommended!~~

2. Lessons Learned... [Rating: 9/10]
You learn a lot from this dorama, from the difficulty deaf people go through, to the solutions placed when you can be open to someone...I enjoyed the many moods of the character Sae, and how she finally begins to put trust into the first person who tries to befriend her...
I also enjoyed the side stories of Keita trying to express his love to Akane, and the tention being stirred up between Akane and Shohei to the end...
I didn't entirely enjoy the music of Orange Range within the dorama, but Mr. Children's theme "Sign" was perfect for this one...

4. awesome, personal, cheerful [Rating: 10/10]
Excellent very "personal" drama ie., the viewer is 1 on 1 with only a few characters so you feel like you actually get to know them, other dramas might distance the viewer a bit too much. The feeling of the drama is also excellent very natural and cheerful through life's harshness and touching moments, good attitude. Also liked the *spoken* language (the sign language was great too) - they really made sure to intonate the spoken language properly etc and people made funny accents and pronounciations eg., prolonged vowels so that they are understood that kept me entertained also you won't see characters mumbling in this drama I really dislike dramas that distance the viewer and mumble! ok I have quirky pet peeves, anyway watch it its awesome

6. A very good drama for its kind [Rating: 9/10]
This is a good drama but only if it's compared with other dramas that also uses this "standard textbook" formula; a love story about a person with inner turmoil that meets another person who slowly changes him or her. The drama did a great job of playing out the nuances between the characters so they don't seem too dull and monotone. What I like the most is that they don't overdo anything, which is tempting for writers writing dramas of this sort. I say this because I've seen too many dramas of this type in the past that gave the audience too heavy a dose of everything, but not this drama. The misunderstandings didn't drag on too long, and the fights didn't result in anything exaggerated, etc, which gives this drama a softer tone to it, and hence, more real-life like. Again, the plot is nothing new, it stayed in the confines of this type of drama: a person with issue(s) but slowly changes because of another person's devotion and love.

Great drama with excellent casts! I keep thinking that Tsumabuki looks younger than Kou before watching this drama. But they proved me wrong, they make such a nice couple! A very touching drama especially the last part when Kou finally spoke. Also, Mr Children's "Sign" gives credit to this drama, no wonder this song is most popular "single" in 2004!

I am so completely swept up by how great this drama is as an artistic endeavor and a grand exposition of humanity on so many levels. I would UNEQUIVOCALLY recommend this show to anyone and everyone. The story was great and the acting, greater. Kou Shibasaki's performance was so compelling it instantly became unforgettable to me as one of the most equisitely humane portrayals ever on Japanese television. Satoshi Tsumabuki is a much matured actor and is surely poised to be Japan's next big thing. I found very little regrettable about this show and its fine qualities are too many to enumerate here. 21. Orange Daze [Rating: 9/10]
This is a really good series, that definately grew on me. Although I didn't find the main characters incredibly likeable at first (Sae especially), after a few episodes they really started to open up, and you see their subtleties.

The characters are pretty emotional for much of the show, but they have balanced out that bitter-sweetness with Keita and his 'Orange Society' plans (hehe). The story overall is very personal, and stays focused on the small group of friends, without straying too much. It captures that intensity of college life/love well.

It's also quite interesting how 'flawed' many of the characters are, in a human way. They can be quite hurtful to one another. They get angry, jealous, and selfish. You get to see both sides, not just the 'perfect' view of their personalities.

A fun and satisfying show, that will make you think. Watch it! :)

I do love this drama and have watched it at least three times or more. The actors all did very well. The relationships between the characters were also developed well in the first half of the drama. However, the later half was not as good as the previous half. The plot became a bit melodramatic and dragging. Anyway, it was still a good drama and worth watching! It was also fun to learn some sign language as watching this drama. BTW, the theme song by Mr. Children was indeed great!

I really enjoyed the chemistry between all of the main characters, and the interesting backstories that were revealed throughout the series. Orange Days is definitely a series that I wouldn't mind watching again and again. The romance, comedy and drama were well-timed and great, and I learned more Japanese Sign Language each episode. It's gotten me interested in American Sign Language. Overall, a very wonderful, poignant series that I'll always cherish.

The performances of all the supporting casts were very good too. In the end, we cared and felt the growing pains of these young adults as they strived to become adults and make something of themselves. Sae was very challenging role and Kou Shibasaki was splendid in playing her, so much so, that I can't imagine another actress as Sae. Great drama, do not miss this!!

I finished this drama in a single day, and find myself searching for more information on the net. I have only watched the more slapstick variety of Japanese drama in the past - "Orange Days" has given me a new insight into J-drama.

There is no doubt Shibasaki has done well in her role. However I've watched "Good Luck" and her performance in OD reminded me strongly of the rigid mechanic in GL. I'm not sure whether Shibasaki is acting the role or acting herself. I'll try to get hold of more drama feathering her to find out.

Not being Japanese I am not sure how realistic OD is, but if this is a quasi-accurate portrait of the Japanese culture/mentality then I suppose it is a good way to get an insight into the Japanese mind.

i have to say the star of the show was definitely Yuuki Kai (brilliant acting by the lead actor) -- this guy basically has the golden personality tat could charm any heart of steel (including Sae & her unreasonable mood swings). not to mention he's seriously cute. :) gotta mention the fact tat the rest of the gang was really amusing as well.

if there was one thing less-perfect in this drama, i would say it was the final episode. wasnt exactly in the league of the previous episodes, just so-so. would've been an amazing drama if there was more climax.

46. Reflection of our Memories [Rating: 9/10]
Memories are what I value the most. Without memories, I can't see much motivation in what anyone is doing, regardless of personal value. If we can't remember or reflect on the past, how can we be prepared for the future?

Orange Days is an even-paced, bittersweet drama that causes us to reflect on our youth, be it middle school, high school, or college. The setting of the show is at a university, and the story revolves around what comes to be known as "Orange no Kai," the Orange Society. The small club is composed of five members and together they live out their last year on campus, their primary goal is to create many good memories before they graduate. Of particular focus is Sae, a deaf girl capable of hearing the occasional high pitch sound or vibration who is still trying to cope with her 4 year bout with her disability, and Kai, a student who's thoughts are dwindling between his carefree days as a student and the uncertainty of his future as an adult.

This drama is reminiscent of Asunaro Hakusho which has a similar setting without a member with a disability. While Asunaro Hakusho thrives on it's jilting melodramatics and intense character situations, Orange Days shines in it's subdued situations and subtle but powerful moments of emotion. In this respect, Orange Days is calm and serene and urges us that while there are many hardships that we as members of society have to overcome, as long as one has the strength to rely on others as much as ourselves, we will have a fighting chance at overcoming the hurdles presented to us.

The storyline was very well-written and absolutely never overdone. In fact, I'm somewhat surprised that something like this could come out of Japan as I am so used to dramas relying on shocking moments and "evil" characters to accentuate the happy moments they present. The only thing I didn't like were some of the actions of Sae's mother, who in later episodes did things almost opposite of what her character originally did -- it made me seem like I thought I knew her but didn't.

It's very refreshing to see that no awkward zoom-ins or traditional Japanese-ish camera angles were used... if there was English dialogue, this could definately pass as a Western show. However, the Japanese setting and social actions by the characters are what attracts me to these dramas in the first place, and are very welcome.

Also of particular interest was the mild and emotionally sublime soundtrack. Naoki Sato did an incredible job of capturing the essence of the memories of college life. The feel-good mood of the entire series can be heavily attributed to the soundtrack. The end song Sign by Mr. Children was very well chosen and complimented each episode. And while some people thought Shanghai Honey by Orange Range was jarring in the middle of a particular episode, I thought it did well creating a specific memory for Orange no Kai. It's moments like those that make you wish you could relive your youth.

Shibasaki Kou did a very good job at portraying a jilted, once-famous deaf person. Her character was annoying at times and forced the audience to feel what she herself was going through. At times I wish she could tear up a bit more, as I probably would have cried more myself if she did... it would have made her performance top notch. Tsumabuki Satoshi did very well himself. He never overacted and was able to convey every emotion required of his character. All the other actors did well, too, notably all of Orange no Kai.

One of the few things the show lacked was a strong ending. I suppose this is hard to do with such a subdued, realistic storyline. While I enjoyed the series from beginning to end, I think certain plot points could have been resolved in a way that could evoke more emotion than it did. Having been written more realistically, I felt I could associate myself with the main characters, but there were times where I wanted to cry more but realized there's no point in doing so if the character wasn't going to (although there were several points where they did emote well).

Still, Orange Days is a refreshingly subdued drama that never overdoes the dramatics. It does a wonderful job of creating the memories that form the backbone of it's story and development of it's characters. For this reason alone, you maintain a good feeling after each episode and complete the series with a good memory yourself -- watching Orange Days.

50. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED [Rating: 10/10]
I don't exactly know what to write, for there is very little for me to criticize. Orange Days is about a group of friends stuck in the transition between adolescense and adulthood. As they try to define themselves and set up paths for their futures, they come to realize that defining oneself is harder than one may think.

The glue that makes the plot stick is Sae, a deaf, talented female who is bent on shutting everything out in order to protect herself from what she preceives as a harsh world. Her light in the darkness becomes Kai, and the Orange Society.

Although Sae's character seems to be in the centre of all things, it's not really about her or her own issues. It's about all five characters and their passage into a new, and alien, world. The storyline is very refreshing and true to real life, and the limited amount of characters makes it easier for the viewer to truely understand each one and feel as if the viewer is also part of the Orange Society.

This intimacy is helped along by Shibasaki Kou, who was surprisingly brilliant, and Tsumabuki Satoshi, who has the gift of communicating volumes with his eyes. Great chemistry between the two!

All-in-all, an excellent watch and highly recommended to all who enjoy a refreshing orange. ^.^

51. Great Coming of Age drama [Rating: 10/10]
Story-wise, Orange Days was very rich and coherent. The story was about the most important things in life: love, passion, friendship and living. And the way that these elements were sewn together magically speaks to its audience. It's such an inspirational story. It somehow pushes you to ask yourself, "what are the important things in my life? What choices should I make?" Acting-wise, Shibasaki Kou and Satoshi Tsumabuki gave very very compelling performances! You wouldn't believe Kou could speak unless you heard it yourself. She was very believable. I think the entire drama was done in good taste, no overbearing elements, down to the last minutest detail.

I had recently graduated with a BA in a similar Degree as Kai so I found myself in many parallel situations and thoughts as him. Unlike him however, I did join that "watch company" though it's almost like a peek into what could have been ;)

But yeah, really how many deaf/blind people dramas do we really need? That whole aspect was a bit gimmicky

one of the best television shpws i've ever watched. this drama has a perfect combination of good direction, competent acting and a simple but solid storyline. both leads were completely believable in their respective characters and their emotional scenes together rarely resulted to overwrought hysterics(unlike many other dramas in its genre). kou shibasaki is a great actress, she is pefect in this role, and the sign language aspect of it must have been difficult to memorize, but she did it so naturally. and tsumabuki satoshi is just a genuinely likeable actor, he seems so sincere and real in his role that i found myself wishing "if only such a perfect human being existed in real life.g overall, this is a sweet and engaging coming of age drama, its kind of formulaic, yes but also very very cute and endearing. if you have to watch a jdrama at all, it should be this one.

Incredible! Amazing plots and acting. I was not at all expecting it to be so amazing when I started watching, but I was hooked after the very first episode, and watched the whole series in 1 day! Cried few times too, very touching. Shibasaki Kou's performance was even better than in Good Luck!!

An intelligent story about friendship and love from the writer of Long Vacation. Shibasaki Kou gives an impressive performance (without saying a word). Co-star Tsumabuki has trouble expressing emotions with his face. In dramatic moments, he just stares stupidly.

One of the dramas I will remember for a very long time. A fantastic drama about the transition stage between being a student and going out into the working world, about friendship, love, disabilities, dreams and hope. Not a big fan of Shibasaki, but I was very impressed with her portrayal of the deaf Sae.

61. excellent! [Rating: 9/10]
This dorama reminds me of Tentai Kanzoku , but with less serious and less mature but more touchy problems. and it actually reminded me a little of Jose the Tiger and the Fish hehe , but Sae isn't nuts. A very beautiful dorama indeed, i enjoyed it very very much. the introduction was amusing yet the plot was very original. I also love the character development. I guess i love everything from it. Well some parts made me go ... becoz of all the sign language, but what surprisingly those parts were only a few eventhough it had so many sign language conversations.

The script is what i like best from it. I can't imagine how they came up with such script. The progress was excellent too. And again, i must say i don't regret voting for Tsumabuki Satoshi. Young but talanted. I just loove all the casts. And it became more addicting after episode 7 where more problems show up, closer to the climax. Beautifully pictured and nice songs too. Still, i think a few parts went a little too slow. and Ueno Juri's (she really looked like Utada Hikaru when she was young) part was so small.

overall, a very very memorable series! and it definitely has one of the best endings ever!

64. A character driven do-not-miss [Rating: 8/10]
I wanted to give it a 10.

I absolutely loved it. It was great. It was fun. It was sweet. All the goodies. The opening music is very simple but every time the opening credits came on, I was happy to see them - the song is simple and catchy and just feels right.

Kai is brilliantly acted, even if the character is a little compartmentalized. He may have belted out one of the most impressive performances I've seen in a Jdrama. Sae's challenges and personality are amazingly handled, if a little over the top at times. She has that bifurcated personality that can make her unbelievably sweet and endearing but at the flip of a coin, an unreasonable and confused child. Akane is actually a very strong role as well. She grows a lot (perhaps a little too introspective) through the series and is suprisingly strong. Shohei was a little underdeveloped (a lot of potential for him), as was Keita. Miho was a treat as the ambitious helper who could never quite get it right.

However, it was not without its flaws: The plot is quite cyclical and never very deep. The ending is hasty and curt and somewhat cliche. How often can they throw the same scenario at us and expect us to be excited by it (return of the ex...)

I think it suffers from imbalance on the main characters relative influence on the relationship, putting almost all of the weight on poor Kai. Sae is portrayed as overly weak and doesn't get sufficient opportunity for redemption - her power play at the end is passive and almost codependant. Kai brushes it off with the same skill and charm that makes him almost too invulnerable.

The final shot is so unbelievably cathartic it breathes spectacular richness into the entire experience, even if entirely predictable. I've never had a single shot make me cry every time I watch it - so much vunerability and trust. (writing that made me choke up).

65. Been there, done that [Rating: 7/10]
Orange Days seems to be riding along a formulaic plot, especially when writer Eriko Kitagawa appears to conjure this drama from a concoction of her previous known works, albeit her previous big hits. There are settings and situations in Orange Days that may seem too familiar and resemble the plots of Kitagawa's other dramas, that one can't help but think that perhaps this drama is a laconic summarization of Kitagawa's works to a newer audience. Or perhaps, Kitagawa has run out of fresh, enthralling ideas.

However, don't get me wrong as I did enjoy Orange Days. It does have its moments and the acting is commendable. Tsumabuki Satoshi is really good, giving an ingenuous performance that brings Kai alive. Narimiya Hiroki, Eita and Shiraishi Miho also excel. As for Kou Shibasaki...I find her character, Sae, excruciatingly exasperating from start to finish. Although I like Kou, her spoilt character is frustrating with meagre redeeming qualities. Sometimes I cheer when Kai yells at her. Kou's sign language is good but she frowns way too much.

What I like about this drama, is not the primal love story, but the strong friendships and life depicted in general. These are portrayed very well, giving this drama warmth and a heart. The characters are not stereotyped and we grow with them as the story progresses.

I just wish that Kitagawa had come up with something more original than recreating the run-of-the-mills plot with lines and scenes that have all been done before. For me, that's this drama's main demerit. Not the best I've seen, but worth checking out.

I liked Orange Days, as it dealt with situations that many can us can relate. And, I can definitely relate myself to the situation Kai is facing, "Stuck between a college student and an outstanding member of society." However, one thing kept on popping into my head, while watching this drama. It reminded me of a modern day "Asunaro Hakusho". The story line may be slightly different, but the setting (three guys and two girls becoming best friends, during their college years) and other situations in the story line are very similar to "Asunaro Hakusho".

The lead actors all have an unbelievably good bond that goes well with the theme of youthful days full of friendship. In addition, Tsumabuki and Shibasaki also give a portrayal of a cute, sometimes annoying, but always full-hearted young love. The story, however, is loosely related to "Aishiteiru to Ittekure," another drama about a deaf character with a huge chip on his shoulder. In Orange Days, that selfish person is played by a girl. Still, it had unbelievably cute scenes that compare to no other drama, hence the 9.

love the actors in this drama but the story line is a bit un-realistic. It is about a girl with high musical talent all of a sudden lost her hearing (that's just too dramatic =P). A great series with a lot of heart. College students can especially relate to some of the issues discussed in this drama - what they're doing after college, whether or not they want to pursue a career in their choice of major, why they chose to do a certain major in the first place, etc etc.

Tsumabuki Satoshi gives a winning performance with his heartwarming and touching scenes between Shibasaki Kou. Some of his hand signals that he directed to her were just so powerful like, "I will save you from the darkness." That scene alone evoked so much emotion.

This was a superb series and goes at a nice pace - reminiscent of the pacing in "Summer Snow". The other actors and actresses also pulled off memorable performances. With such a good cast, nice soundtrack, and moving dialogue, "Orange Days" is one series that I highly recommend.

Really fun and light romantic drama. Although I didn't like Sae's attitude, this drama is one of the best in my opinion.

Ahh what a cute love story. College life couldn't get any better, what with friends and love and all.. but then you are forced to grow up. As these charecters grow up they face problems that normal people like us deal with. After watching this you'll start to feel like conversing in sign language, because it seemed so cool!

Okay, so I found the plot a bit obivous, and the characters seem to take forever to realize important facts and feelings. BUT, Orange Days was just so cute and funny that I found myself devouring each episode as I got them! I laughed and cried for all of the victories and dissapointments of each of the characters, and I couldn't help but root for their loves to be realized! The ending was perfect and lovely. Narimiya Hiroki, especially, was so fantastic in yet ANOTHER drama. I am looking forward to his future projects! He's so wonderful.

Great series, Tsumabuki Satoshi & Shibasaki Kou have good onscreen chemistry. There are funny moments as well as sad ones which makes it an excellent drama. The music in my opinion is very good and the theme song "Sign" by Mr.Children is well suited. Buy it now!

My first drama ever! Hiroki Narimiya in the role of the playboy is perfect! Kou SHibasaki is sooo cute, I love the character of Sae, she's so cute using signs language, don't you think?
And Kai-kun, the perfect boyfriend ahhh he's so cute!!

This dorama is absolutely BRILLIANT. I loved it from the moment it started to the very end. There's so much you can get out of watching this, I swear. A story of hardship, of friendships, of love... It's absolutely wonderful.

I've never really like stereotypes, but this one just blows me away! Of course it's the leads that make this story endearing. The screenplay is great and never once was there a dull moment. And it has one of the best ending ever! Satoshi and Kou make a compelling couple. They sort of balance each other out super well. They definitely have my vote for their talent in this.

Theme song worked nicely. 'Todoite kureru to ii na...'. A nice, closer to reality type story. Overcoming the up's and down's of life and then running into more problems on the way.

A dorama that survives and transcends the typical 'disabled' tag by setting it in a unique background. I would say its a fair reflection of the uncertainty that graduating students face and the quiet, desperate urge to enjoy what precious school time left with your friends. Funny and moving scenes are both excellent and in abundance. Great chemistry between the leads, great OST by Naoki Sato of Good Luck!! I really liked Kai's selfless, emotional character and Sae who underwent a personality change. Kou Shibasaki shows that she is a versatile actress and Tsumabuki Satoshi does himself credit, and I dont have a single bad thing to say about the rest of the supporting cast. I love this drama. n Sign by mr. children rocks!!!!

although it's sometimes a bit slow paced, it's worth watching it all! think it can give you a slight idea what it is like to be deaf. a very cute lovestory within the problems of a social outcast.

I loved it. Shibasaki Kou as Hagio Sae was a great performance from beginning to end as well as the supporting cast.

At times in this series, i really disliked Sae. Even though i can understand why she is like that, i still didnt like her much. I felt that she didn't treat Kai the way he should be treated. But i guess that added to the atmosphere of this drama. I enjoyed watching it. I know alot of people said that it lagged and stuff. But i liked the pacing as it was. It was playful at the right parts, and solemn and touching at the right parts. Nari is a plus ^^;

I don't know, I wasn't too excited over this drama as a lot of people are. Some parts were kind of boring, and Shibasaki's character annoyed me. However, Tsumabuki and Shibasaki exhibited excellent acting skills in this.

Orange Days is simply charming and poignant, and I fell in love with both Kou Shibasaki and Satoshi Tsumabuki in this dorama. The story is not a new one, but it is fresh and very well told. Great drama, do not miss this!!

never expected that this series will be awesome. me and my friends watched this in 1day. so we were glued on the tv for 11hours. yes, you heard me right, 11hours. anyways, the college setting is unique. ive never seen a series with that for a long time. it made me reminisce the good old days. all the casts are spectacular. hats off to them for learning sign language specially for this series. Tsumabaki satoshi did a marvelous job on playing a friend, lover and support aid. he acts very subtle but the impact is really deep. i loved how friendship was instill and dramatically shown in this series. Kou Shibasaki was alright. i just didnt like her character cause i think she's so selfish and self-centered. but of course, prince charming, Kai-Ku rescued her......great jdorama, simply one of a kind.

Sweet & heart-warming, portrayed graduates' dilema about pursuing their dream careers. It's not a drama that gave me yo-yo feelings, it's like a pleasant drive along the moutain highways, maybe if I were abt to graduate now I would feel more for this show. I do enjoy it overall, it just doesn't linger in my mind that's all. Satoshi is a talented & cute actor. I don't find Kou that pretty but she definitely acted well (I have had a few mute neighbours before so I know how they behave)

One of my favorite dramas. For me, up there with GTO and Taiga doramas. Tsumabuki and Shibasaki were wonderful as the main protagonists. Because the supporting cast were small, they too left an impression on you. It really does bring me back to my college days when watchig this. First love, first broken heart, finals, job hunting. You name it, I felt it just like the characters in the show. So, this show can be quite personal to a viewer. I appreciate learning so much sign language while watching this. And the ending is nice and neat :-)

Highly recommended. If you want to reminisce about your glory college days, when you sat on campus with your gf/bf, looking at the orange sunset, then this show is definitely for you. Also, it has one of my favorite songs ever, Sign by Mr.Children. Really fits the show like a glove.

Interesting plot, excellent acting by the cast and a kick-a$$ soundtrack on the side! The rabu-rabu moments were nicely done (w/ a dose of humor) that it didn't come out as all cheesy and stuff (unlike most dramas with similar plots.. gahd i hate that ). And of course.... its got Satoshi Tsumabuki in it.. good enough for me. Although i really can't see him and Shibasaki as lovers... more like siblings. LOL. anyhoo... i hope everyone gets to watch this drama. I dunno 'bout you guys but it made me want to learn sign language -- i feel like singing Shanghai Honey the same way they did.. nyahaha!
