Synopsis
After a young boy takes away another boy's life, the series draws the stories of their families as they cope with the tragedy. Both families are typical households that can be found anywhere, and the two mothers are just like any other, devoting their lives to raising their kids with love. The show touches on many similar events that have occurred in recent years in Japan, but unlike other dramas that have done so, "Aishiteru" truly focuses on the lives of the families involved, as they each struggle to find their way to continue living.

1. Serious, sincere... [Rating: 8/10]
Based on the popular manga, AISHITERU does quite a few things right. The striking premise: a middle-school boy kills a younger child - an action that angers some and mystifies pretty much everybody else.

The camera lingers over Izumi Imamori in her role as the mother of the incarcerated son; her character is almost sacrificial in her prayerful humbleness. The immortal Misako Tanaka delivers a standout performance as a case worker cum harried housewife who has a certain way with chidden. The actors and writers show a obvious sympathy for the life of the departed child, as well as an appreciation for the equally hard lives of the guilty boy's family. But AISHITERU is less skilled at showing a lighter side, and the immutable attitudes of the grieving parents gets a bit tiresome after a while.

AISHITERU is consistently interesting, with good performances all around. The court hearings are unexpectedly effective. But the potent emotional content leaves hope that the plot will move beyond emotional correctness and dorama formula; it rarely does.

2. Very powerful drama! [Rating: 10/10]
Wow this is an amazing drama. Such fantastic acting from all the cast. Itaya Yuka was especially amazing in this. I was not sure if I wanted to continue after watching the first episode because I could not imagine that after such drama in the first episode that they could maintain a decent story line for the remaining episodes and honestly I was not sure I could take much more as it was so moving and sad but I hung in and it was amazing. A little slow at points and they could have done this in less episodes but I loved it.

This is the kind of drama you do not just watch to pass time. It really makes you think and look at the world a little different. Bravo.

3. BEST DRAMA of the season!!! [Rating: 10/10]
For me especially this year has been really dissapointing of Dramas, what is with all these bland boring dramas filled with nothing but pretty faces?! However aishiteru is diffrent this drama has real people in real situations about two diffrent mothers a mother whos son killed the other mothers son and how they react and society reacts.

With everything going on in the world this drama brings family and people back together back to talking to eachother..

I highly recomend this drama its such a sad and hopefull story

I wish there was something higher than 10 to give this. I usually hesitate and think to myself "so is this drama really a 10 then? As in perfect? Or do I just really like it a lot?" and I hem and haw for a bit until I finally just give in to how much I enjoyed it, while not completely sure about the rating. Just minutes into watching this drama though, I knew I was in for something big--it was going to be a all-out sap fest or an unbelievably good drama. Halfway through the series and I was already decided this the best drama I've ever seen in my life, and possibly ever will see.

I don't even know where to start--there were so many things that could have went wrong with this because it is an incredibly delicate subject and the plot alone gives a lot of chance of turning it into another drama filled with cheap sentiment and overdramatics. Not to say that this is not one heavy drama, but everything is dealt with realistically and there were no easy way outs for anyone. Every character had to suffer and come to turns with the tragic event and their own actions; no one person was always right and they didn't behave like anything but normal, sincere people. Everything in this drama was executed perfectly, the actors flawless.

Most other dramas can make you laugh, cry, or just pass the time. Aishiteru is truly something else though, and I can say in all honesty this is the first time that one truly touched my heart and moved my soul. This is by and far my favorite.

Awesome cast (especially the female characters), dealing with a huge taboo in our societies. Rythm is slow indeed but it fits perfectly the story.
Only flaw is that the event that triggered the crime wasn't very convincing nor very well played :/ (5th episode).
Anyway it's worth watching, it clearly is a superior drama!

I have been watching more serious dark adult themed dramas, again this was one of the recommendations by the members of this website. This drama is slow moving, but I loved the pace of the story. It really hits home and makes me reflect on my life growing up. Definitely recommend this.

Great acting from the mums! I'm giving this drama a 10 for exploring a dark topic from different perspectives, and in the midst of doing so, demonstrates the power of unconditional love and forgiveness.

There is not one wasted moment in this drama--every scene is filled with meaning, emotion, and sincerity. Other dramas might build up to one or two touching moments, but "Aishiteru" is a genuine work that doesn't just shove artificial sadness into your face to choke out some tears, but rather hits a chord deep inside that brings both a profound sadness and also reminds us of love in its most true and pure form. Amazing performances, script, everything. Hands down my favorite jdorama ever.
