Synopsis
It tells the stories of 3 women in 3 different eras: Taisho (1912-1926), Showa (1926-1988) and Heisei (1988-). In the first generation which takes place in the 1920s at the time of the Great Kanto Earthquake, Togura Aya (Nanako) who comes from a wealthy and influential family, marries against her will to a wealthy man Yokoyama Heikichi who can help her father tide over his financial difficulties. It seems a wrong move, and life goes on meaninglessly for her, until she makes up her mind to follow her heart (Kota Yashiro, a man with a humble background). However, inequality between men and women prevails, and Aya meets many difficulties... The second woman Junko is the daughter of Aya. The story starts just after Japan surrenders in WWII. Life is hard, and she has to look after her younger brother who has grown up under the Imperialism influence. However, her life changes when she meets a Japanese-American soldier... In the 3rd era, Chiyo is the focus. An independent, self-centered career woman, she embarks on a journey of revenge on her mother who has abandoned her 24 years ago when she is only 4 years old, after receiving a call from her mother who wishes to meet up...

1. brilliant [Rating: 10/10]
As everyone says, this is why Nanako is superb. She is just a brilliant actress, and a total natural. She makes a meaningful story real. Without a convincing performance as Nanako's, the strong message that the story holds would have been lost. Nanako passed down the story throughout the generations as she played each woman. She is such a credible actress, a total star. She needs to keep doing what she does, because she is just incredible.

While this drama was pretty short compared to others, the story developed and overlapped well. It was enjoyable to watch this drama and learn more about Japanese history and culture of the past. None of the dramas I've seen have dealt with this time period. One thing's for sure, this is not your ordinary drama. One of the stories however lagged from the rest which brings this down to I would say 8.

3. A touching love story [Rating: 9/10]
No matter what this is kinda confusing at between the second and third generation, but as one can see it all leads to a point again. Love is a full circle in life. Get show to watch with your Japanese girlfriend or any girlfriend who likes japanese drama.

4. Nice Love Story [Rating: ?/10]
Pretty touching drama, it was very confusing between the connection between the second and third story, but the first story was my favourite. It also teaches you a little about japanese history and shows how the times have changes through the decades.

What a wonderful idea for a drama. Matsushima Nanako's performance was great. Seeing her as three differant characters gives a strange impression, that lends an almost mystical quality to the story, which would have been lost if they had used different actresses. The only problem is the third story, mostly because the male lead is horrible and I find it hard to believe any one could fall in love with him. Also I feel that by taking place mostly outside of japan it sort of lessens the value of seeing the progression of time into the present.

An interesting drama special that is a tribute to the 20th century. Matsushima Nanako plays three different generations of women in Japan, during the early 1900's as an aristocrat, a teacher during post WWII, and a businesswoman of today. The drama is divided up into three different sections, and each section is truly a love story. Matsushima Nanako is the only actress that stays constant throughout the series, all of the other characters change. My personal favorite is the third section, with Watabe Atsuro. Definetely something to watch!

What a nice story with a historical context. The struggles of Japanese women over the last century are many with the constant being relationships and love.

Nanako Matsushima is hands down the best actress around and she gives the most for the 3 roles. Nice series.

Nanako is such a great actress! She plays three different women within three different generations. Each of which tells a story of struggle which spans from the taisho period to the present. Kind of educating because it reflect the social landscape of a changing Japan.

Though I love Nanako, this drama doesnt have much appeal other than her. Nana chan plays 3 girls of different generation of a family. Quite disappointing to me. Simply too much of her in a story made to appeal to the women. Kumene, Nana chan, I only say what I felt.

good acting by nanako!!

Basically the story may be a bit slow, but definitely has its meaning and portrayed on how the women shows their strength when coping with difficult situation and their fight for love.

Very touching and on drama to watch, esp for nanako..

It's interesting to watch how a woman's position in the world periodically changed in the last century. Matsushima Nanako is believable as the three women and supporting roles are as good. A family type show with good stories that tied together. Nanako was very good.

Very boring, If you learned something historical in this dorama it means that you haven't been attending school as you should have! Besides, Masushima is just ugly, her face looks like a half cut lemon! poor girl!! and poor Sorimachi.....
9. Comments by Nat [Rating: 9/10]
All the 3 stories are really great, the first one has a boring starting but a incredible turnaround, the second one is a little predictable but still very touching and the last one is very beautiful. Nanako did a great work in his drama.
10. Comments by Michi [Rating: 6/10]
It's okay, but i dont really like period / historical drama. Eventhough the 3rd generation lives in a modern life but it is very boring and typical! but i guess its ok the actress is nanako matsushima. so it is watchable :P

A near perfect drama series. Points off for the last story of the century-
slow moving, bad acting, unbelievable plot. While the first two stories
are full of redemptive themes, the last one is practically a joke.

I think Nanako has given her best performance in this drama. She has proven herself not as the pretty Japanese drama queen but also a good actress. I like her character in this drama...all three of them.

Very good. Each time period had very good points, but i liked the Taisho period the best. A nice way to see how women have progressed in Japan through the past century. The end turned out well. 9/10

1st story is ok, 2nd one barely meh... 3rd one is great and funny. Way too dramatic, except for the last one which is an 8.

This is why I like Matsushima Nanako because of performances like these. She's really great in this drama. She showed how she can portray 3 different yet similar roles.

Start from painting and end to same painting, very touching! Who know their ancestors had unfulfilled love but finally to be couple after generations. I was inspired by 3rd story, the scene the had-been-great boxer told Chiyo's story, things he did regretfully and tearfully...

Takes talent to act as three separate characters in one dorama.
