1. In a class of its own [Rating: 8/10]
What was interesting about this drama was that it was so different; from the setting right down to the speech patterns of the characters. Once again, Nagase portrays a rather outrageous character, and does it well. There is plenty of chemistry between him and the lead actress, Aibu Saki - who was brilliant as the stubborn, tough but at times, sensitive Suzu. Not only that, I loved the interaction between all the characters in the drama. There were none that didn't leave their mark on you; none that you couldn't sympathize with or care for. And I certainly applaud all the actors for learning how to speak in that odd Tosa dialect.

The storyline starts of as a simple story of blossoming love between Taro and Suzu, but certainly gets more complicated when it reaches its climax. I couldn't help but rooting for BOTH Suzu and Miwako, but in the end, Taro can only be with one, and I'm glad he chose whom he chose in the end, though it was bittersweet. But certainly, very powerful.

I can't for life understand why it received such low ratings - possibly due to its late broadcast time.

2. Great romatic comedy [Rating: 9/10]
One of the great romantic comedy doramas in my opinion.

What I look for in romantic comedies is:
- Good acting. Nagase Tomoya and Aibu Saki were perfect, and the supporting cast very good as well
- Chemistry between the lead actors and characters
- An intelligent romantic plot, with a little bit of realism
- Light-hearted moments, particularly with the supporting cast
- A good development of the story, with surprises and twists

Utahime has all of that, and it's well executed!

3. Bittersweet [Rating: 6/10]
I loved the first few episodes but towards the end, it started to get a little too boring. Although the drama itself can be quite slow paced at times, these last few episodes started to drag a bit too much. However, Nagase Tomoya and Aibu Saki played their characters well. The rest of the cast is equally good. The ending is bittersweet and you'll have to think a while to get the final conclusion.

I wasn't very impressed with the first half of this series. A cute lighthearted feel to the drama, nice characters, loose storyline, overall very relaxed. I felt it became much more interesting towards the end in the last 3 episodes.

Tomoya Nagase plays a young man named Yuichi or Taro (name throughout most of the drama) who has lost his memory and ends up on the beach. A girl named Suzu discovers him and her family takes him in and treats him as one of their own. Suzu falls in love with him in the very beginning and Taro slowly starts to fall in love with her also. This is great and all but I felt it was a little awkward for a guy to fall in love with someone he saw grow up like a little sister. That's beside the point.

Anyway, I only found the drama to start getting interesting when Yuichi's wife came into the picture. I felt that she was the best character in the whole series. She was in such a tough position - seeing her husband after 10 years and finding out that he doesn't remember her at all and is in love with another woman. I don't see her on the list of actors, but I feel that Koike Eiko did an outstanding and convincing job as Miwako. Midway through, I would have actually liked to see more of her on screen rather than Suzu and Taro.

Anyway, I liked how the drama dealt with the town's feelings about the situation and it just shows how selfish people can be. The ending was well done, it helped tie up all the loose endings. It's not something that can be said for most of the dramas they have on today.

Overall, this drama is worth watching. I was going to give it a 7, but because of the ending - I gave it one extra point.

A must see! Nagase Tomoya who play Taro really did a wonderful job, in the end you really respect and admire his actions and choices through out his journey. Comedically he was hilarious, there were countless times when i would laugh out loud. I can honestly say he was perfect for that role.

Aibu Saki who plays the adorable Suzu, you will surely fall in love with this character and really feel for her when she faces hardship. She looked great for her role, very kawaii, and had really good chemistry with Taro.

The rest of the cast did great job as well, i think the entire cast deserves a lot of credit. The story is about memory loss, but has enough comedy and emotion in it to make it into an outstanding story. The ending was fanatistically satisfying which i find quite rare these days. Definately if you like a happy unpredictable ending this jdorama will satisfy your needs!

This is my #1 this season.
Beats the generic Galileo hands down with it's atmosphere. I'm kind of.. debating with myself how to compare this with ώt [Shigehoshi], because that one is SO weird.. But I'm more fond of Utahime, nevertheless.

I've been totally hooked to Utahime the whole time, and the series just keep getting better and better.
It has got the feeling of "the good old days", being really relaxing, refreshing and kind of.. totally giving a break from the busy life. It's like diving into another universe and the warm humour and the small, planned details are total love.
A true jewel this season, I'm disappointed for the ratings (or maybe I should just be angry with the person who decided on this drama's airing time?).

And the theme song is pretty much gorgeous. It's kind of 'gloomy' by it's image, but it has a positive message nevertheless.

This could've been a great movie, on par with "The Magic Hour" and such. How? They should've:
1) gotten rid of 4/5 of the dorama (filled with useless characters - the innkeeper, the onee-san and her husband, the fisherman, the japanese-guy-with-dyed-hair-pretending-to-be-russian and so on); 2) re-written Aibu Saki's character as something else than this childish, selfish, unsufferably spoiled brat; 3) added some scenes from Golden Era movies (either from real movies, like "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid", or if that hadn't been possible, at least with b/w scenes reminiscent of those old cinematic gems).
Unfortunately they didn't do that, and what we're left with here is a waste of film (not to mention, an unforgivable waste of Nagase Tomoya's, Koike Eiko's and Fubuki Jun's acting talent!).

Very average dorama. Not the most complicated story in the world and thereby not super exiting or anything either. Took me a while to get into it and it annoyed me so much when Miwako suddenly came into the picture.
The acting was sometimes a little over the top and I wasn't very happy with Sato Ryuta role. I was especially annoyed at first, but when I began knowing the story about why he was a yakuza I kinda got more used to it. But he could still have done a much better job in some other roles.
Aibu and Nagase both did pretty good job. A little bit overreacting here and there, but still good.

This was a surprisingly well-acted drama! In the past I have winced at performances from Aibu Saki and Nagase Tomoya, but they did well this time around. The dialect they spoke for the most part felt very natural. This drama's story was engaging right from the start, although they made the ending just a bit too obvious from the very first episode. But maybe that was the intention of the series? It's not the ending that matters (the one true ending is "everyone dies" after all), but the shape and story of lives. So truly, this was an amazing and funny drama!
7. Comments by Inujun [Rating: 6/10]
The storyline was promising but it was just totally average, in fact I'd call it more of a slice-of-life flick, you have to be patient and interested in their everyday life since theres not supposed to be an actual deep plot that will keep you hooked. Nagase Tomoya didn't exactly shine here too, it was just like his everyday 'bad guy with a good heart' performance. The other characters didn't stand out that much so frankly, theres nothing too attractive about this. Maybe this should have been shortened to 6 episodes.

Improved as the show progressed, especially when the main plot started, and the wackiness level has been reduced. I very nearly gave up on this during the first episode, and it took me 3 or so episodes to "get" it, but I'm glad I stuck with it. The ending did seem rather rushed, but I think it worked. Refreshingly different from the usual j-drama.
10. Comments by Akiiness [Rating: 7/10]
I really liked Utahime in a lot of ways. The drama on the whole is somewhat different from a lot of typical romance dramas out there, and for that, it's really enough to catch my interest. Not only that, but I've became a big shipper of Aibu Saki & Nagase Tomoya. :P It's quite enjoyable, but rather bittersweet. It's hard to hate this drama.
11. Comments by strawberrynkiwi [Rating: 9/10]
I give Utahime a 9.5. Seriously, ratings lie. Utahime is definitely worth watching. Usually I get really annoyed with settings in history, but this is my first and I looooved it. Tomoya Nagase is a wonderful actor. His other dramas don't do him justice. This one definitely is his best. If you are a Nagase fan, watch it. Best in the season.
12. Comments by EstherM [Rating: 8/10]
It gets already a few extra points because it's different. The timeline is the 50ties and local ben is spoken throughout the drama. Charming. I thought it was comedy but it had sad elements too. It turned out different then I imagined and I am not sure I like it. But if you are looking for something different, this could work for you.

I didn't think this show would be any good to be honest but i was very pleasantly surprised. The memory-loss thing can be soo overused but it worked very well and kind of in a different way. this show is absolutely darling and probably one of the better ones this season.
14. Comments by Tachii [Rating: 8/10]
Ah the ending was truly bittersweet, in every sense of the word. All the romance cliches are there as well. Loads of misunderstandings, coincidental eavesdropping, inability to confess, and so on. Tomoya Nagase is still awesome though. And Saki Aibu was cute here.

Such an underrated drama that deserves so much more love. It started off a bit slow but totally picks up towards the end. Be prepared to cry your eyes out. T_T I recommend multiple viewings in order to pick up on all the nice details.

An amazing story. Simply one of the best in years. Great acting and cast. The ending splits the audience in two when it comes to the heart - but the brain says it's the way it should be. A perfect 10!
