Synopsis
Date Kazuyoshi is a detective on the Kanagawa prefectural police force. During the day, he is known as a "Buddha" for his gentle personality, pouring all of his energy into resolving each case. At night, however, he transforms into a cruel punisher as his gentleness gives way to his anger towards the criminals. The series poses questions about what justice and evil truly are.

1. Excellent, thought-provoking, and outstanding cast [Rating: 8/10]
Sakai Masato reminds me of a Japanese Gary Sinise. There's that same kind of squinty inscrutability - you don't know whether he's sad, amused or lost in thought at any given moment - but with a hint of Jackie Chan's light-heartedness masking deeper character conflicts. In other words, a pitch-perfect performance. He gives the Date character an incredible complexity and a palpable chemistry with every other character he interacts with.

Nishikido Ryo is great as his sidekick Kudo, at first an antagonist, then an apprentice of sorts; Kaga Takeshi as the Chief and Osugi Ren as the bartender and ex-cop Mikami, are both pivotal characters perfectly acted, and each a surprise twist. Anne (Watanabe, daughter of Ken Watanabe of "The Last Samurai" fame,) gives Asuka a necessary gravity as the ethical conscience of the group, and Ryo as journalist and ex-cop Saeko, gives a great performance as a somewhat unpredictable wild-card.

The story itself does a great job of examining two related issues: the question of justice vs. revenge on a direct level, and the issue of justice vs. vigilantism itself on a broader perspective. My only complaint is that by the last couple of episodes there are so many different people involved in the vigilante plot and from so many different angles that the ethical distinctions get a little muddled. And yes, you'll find yourself shouting at your TV "So go burn a couple dozen copies of that CD-R already!" You will also find yourself getting a little annoyed that two of the female characters agree to meet with shady characters in deserted warehouses after dark, against all normal sense of self-preservation. Worse, in Asuka's case she turns around and does it a second time after nearly getting killed the first. Nobody with a functioning brain who valued her life would ever do that.

Nonetheless, the series manages to avoid cliches, doesn't wimp out on uncomfortable subjects (child abuse, corruption, fanaticism,) and admirably uses moral choices among characters rather than arbitrary physical conflicts, as pivot points in the plot. And did I mention the casting was excellent?

This is definitely time well spent.

2. Very good, until near the end [Rating: 7/10]
It's a really engrossing story that keeps you guessing until near the end. Then it turns into a cliche of the bad guys trying to get a hold of some incriminating evidence, in this case a CD-R. That's when it starts to become unbelievable, because they could have burned like 10 copies of the CD-R to keep, and they could have uploaded it to torrent sites like the piratebay if they wanted the evidence to be there for all to see.

At first glance, Joker is yet another cop drama among a sea of cop dramas. What made it different? Vigilantism, of course! The characters could have been slightly more rounded, but overall I was on the edge of my seat, wondering if Daito would ever be caught, and to whom he would next deal out his unique form of justice. I guess I was disappointed by the very open-ended finale and the series' episodic nature, but that means there might be a sequel, right? RIGHT?

This show reminded me a lot of "Dexter", but a little more forgiving. The stories were intriguing though very dark and the acting was good. The main lead does a very convincing job of keeping a "mask" to hide any emotion when dealing with his "victims". The only issue with the drama was the overarching story which seemed to be much less interesting than the morality of disposing criminals who had not been put to justice.

I love this series. I'm really surprised by Sakai performance, he's really good. Anne is okay but Ryo is doesn't special anymore. His peak performance is at Last friend drama, now i can't feel his presence anymore.
They build the stories really well, so we could hate the bad guy. I never watch this kind of drama or movie. So i give this drama a high point because of the Creativity.

is actually not a bad story on how they managed to find the truth behind each crime. but towards the end of the drama, i think it is quite lame. easily guess plot so not that exciting. the SP drama is a total waste of time. but if there is a part 2, i will watch because there is alot of unprovided details in this drama.

An excellent examination of the ethics of vigilantism with a phenomenal cast, both as individuals and as an ensemble. You will find yourself thinking about people and events from this series for weeks after you've finished watching. The Date character in particular is superbly acted by Masato Sakai.

Though predictable towards the end, this drama kept me wanting to know what happens next! The cast was great and I'm starting to appreciate Nishikido as an actor the more I see him. It's very dark and different from most jdramas and the action is alright too. I really recommend it.

It got a little muddled near the end, but overall pretty good. There were some comments about why they didn't just copy the CD. When they first discover the CD, as Nishikido is checking it out he states that it's copy protected. Just wanted to clear that up.

Great action dorama, would give a 10 if it was not too much repetitive, most episodes follow the same pattern
