Synopsis
Set in a small restaurant in the corner of a shopping district, an unusual eatery is only open after midnight, and its standard menu consists of just a single choice. Shinya Shokudo is adapted from a manga by Yaro Abe. How much does this screenplay differ from the manga, I do not know. It's a heartwarming drama to wind down after a working day. It doesn't promise a good ending to every episode because real life doesn't work out this way. So long as the customer is alive, his ups and downs continue. Each episode peers into the background of one/a pair of interesting customers and is accompanied by a dish much cherished by that customer. Nothing is mentioned about Master, the owner of the eatery. He is just a host, a man of few words and an occasional advisor.

Nice little dorama (ten 24min-long episodes) telling the stories of the different customers of a little restaurant that only opens at night. At first it was a bit strange to see, but after a while you just want to go back to Shinya Shokudou. It is true that nothing is said about Master, a man with a scar in his face, someone who speaks calmly and that cooks every single (and simple) dish with care. I just want to try to cook some dishes his way (even the butter rice or the instant ramen!). Minimal characters and stories about (maybe) real life: not everything ends up fine, and you don't always get to know other people's past or future or even present. The opening theme is also superb (Omohide by Suzuki Tsunekichi); it perfectly matches the warm atmosphere of the dorama. Calm, relaxing, heartwarming but also bitter and a bit sad. I absolutely recommend this one.

A show to my taste - makes you feel that you are a regular at Master's night restaurant in Golden Gai too. Each episode is about one simple dish and tells the backstory of one or two regulars. Not all the stories are good, in fact most of them are cardboard stuff, but they convey a warm and fuzzy feeling ^_^!

It's a cliche, but this show is as comfortable as a favorite pair of jeans. Or maybe a more appropriate comparison would be "comfort food". Nothing ground-breaking or trend-setting, just very good characters, setting, and writing.

One episode for ine cutomer. The stories were great (and the food looked awesome...) Don't watch it if you're on a diet otherwise it's a nice short drama.

Little slices of Tokyo life. Very minimal, no emphasis on the big picture or lengthy plotlines. Fascinating characters and great dialogue.

Really enjoyed season 1. Slow paced like cooking beef & potato stew. Just put on med. and let it cook slow and long!

There's not really a plot here, each episode is about one of the customers at an all-night diner, but I liked it.
