I finished watching Soredemo, Ikite Yuku yesterday. It's definitely high quality, one of the best in the last few years, but I have mixed feelings about it. For the first half, I was tempted to use words such as stunning/incredible to describe it, I got the feeling it's going to be great after the first 15 minutes. The theme song makes a lasting/haunting impression. Mitushima Hikari was great, as was Ohtake Shinobu, and most of the cast. But I didn't like the direction the series took in the second half, didn't understand how some of the main characters (and their thoughts) changed, and didn't like how the writer treated some of the characters, esp. Fumiya. I really wish it could have ended on a more hopeful note. Probably it has something to do with me watching the last 5 episodes in a row, but I finished watching feeling rather down and a bit confused. Could say a lot more with more time and spoilers, but that's enough for now. Even with the above reservation, there were parts I want to rewatch again and possibly again, it was really good at times. 8/10

Edit: I have been thinking about this series on and off the last few days since I have last written, even when I was watching other dramas. What I have written isn't accurate, the ending is hopeful, just not for everyone. I couldn't get over/accept how Fumiya turned out, that's my main problem. The series itself is thoroughly engrossing and it has influenced me to re-evaluate how I should live my life in the future.

I was not very happy with how this ended, which is really a shame because otherwise this is one of the best series I have ever watched. Everything is handled exactly the way it should be, this is drama, not melodrama, it's told through characters and emotions not through plot twists. Probably the most interesting thing about this drama is how socially awkward the two leads are, they don't come off as idols or TV stars but more like people you would meet at a Star Trek convention. It's entirely different, and the wacky things that they say could be a turn-off to some, but I would say they simply don't "get it".

But again, back to the ending; when I think about it I guess I can understand why it went this way, and I am not the type of person to prefer one type of ending over another, but it just feels like they sold it short. I imagine I was hoping for a happy ending, but really it was even set up well for a very serious tragic ending. Either way this middle of the road stuff killed something for me.

I began this series because of its cast and premise. It was the kind of drama that is at times uplifting, at others so saddening that you want to curl up at the bottom of a deep, dark hole and never surface again. It was a beautiful drama, with the countryside and pond having been so lovingly film, but I can't say the entire cast had the same passion for the show. Otake Shinobu gave a stand out performance however. I've never seen a woman appear so fragile and yet so powerful at the same time. Mitsushima Hikari surprised me. She has an odd style of acting, but it's honest. Eita, however, surprised me in how hesitant his performance was. It was as if he were avoiding the emotions of the character and throughout the entire series I only saw Eita, and not who he was portraying. For this, I must dock points. He was the main character! But still. This was a wonderful series and well worth the watch.

Best drama I have seen in quite awhile. Pretty intense. I knew Eita, Fubuki, Ono, and Otake would be good but Hikari Mitsushima came out of nowhere! My only complaint would be the ending. I would have ended with the scene in the park after Eita and Mitsushima had spent the last day together. The rest after that seemed tacked on.

The best writing and acting I've seen in a drama so far. The subject matter is quite somber and heavy, but the characters are so complex and determined to persevere that it remains watchable. No fancy sets or pretty idols...just raw emotion and intensity throughout. Amazing.

OUTSTANDING cast...all the performances were amazing. Story was well written and the middle episodes had me captivated. Just keep in mind it is not your typical laugh, funny, fuzzy, tearjerker kinda dorama -- much more depth and hits hard.

People die and everybody else feels sorry for themselves or are angry at the world. The end ... except it takes an agonizing long time to get there so you wish that it was you who died in the first place.

Very odd and awkward dorama (esp. the dialogue!!), but this probably makes its charm. Definitely not your usual series...

Well-acted melodrama with a solid cast. I wasn't a big fan of the ending, however.
