So once upon a time there was a drama, called GTO, that was very popular and is still remembered today. So someone decides that instead of coming up with a new drama they will just remake GTO. Was it because it would be easy money? Because they loved the original so much? Because they are lazy and unoriginal? There's no real way to know and it doesn't really matter either. Their job was both easy and at the same time hard, because they had something to compare it to, it should be easy to have a good idea of how their remake compares, so both the creators and the audience will know very easily the level of their success. And so how does this compare? Answer: it's a total failure.
On nearly every single level this is not as good as the original. The cast is not as good, that's especially a problem for Onizuka. I think this actress for Fuyutsuki is way more appropriate, but then they mess it up by having her be nearly a pointless character. None of the side characters have any value or screen time. The coach in this seemed hilarious, but again he gets literally nothing more than seconds of screen time. Most importantly it's not nearly as funny, and it doesn't help that we have seen this all before. But then strangely it seems half the stuff in the original is missing here. I don't know what all they may have added, but whatever it is it isn't any good.
Judged as a show in and of itself, I suppose this could be considered pretty good, but judged as the remake that it in fact is, it's a total failure. I don't particularly enjoy being that harsh, but they set themselves up for it by trying to remake a classic that is just way better than they are capable of living up to. |

This one's actually hard to judge for me. I loved the old version very much and even started collecting the manga back in the day - still, I don't remember either of them particularly well. Still, I'm biased and have expectations.
This drama was actually quite nice on some aspects, not so much on others. Some gags were very close atempts to keep in line with the manga, which I like. Then again some things felt oddly wrong. My favourite chara of the 1998 verison was Kikuchi, who completely falls flat in this one. Also, I thought it seriously stupid, how all charas simply turned 180��C as soon as Onizuka tried to approach and help them. Resistance truely was weak. Also - and this is what I though most off -, Onizuka behaved WAY too much like a teacher. He showed how much he cared and talked about teaching and stuff - which I just thought completely beside the point of the manga, where he's just some crazy freak, not giving a shit. So the feeling was off for me. Still, the drama was mostly entertaining and Yamamoto Yusuke did a brilliant job - the three friends were best. Sadly weak acting all around, though. |

Currently watching this being a huge GTO fan. I've read the manga, seen the anime, I've seen the GTO 1998 live action drama. And when I saw a remake, I said, what the hell. This drama is still ongoing as I write this review. But this Onizuka is more badass than the Onizuka version in the 1998 drama. Granted so far the 1998 one had more memorable characters and the chemistry between Onizuka and Fuyutsuki was so much better. But so far I'm liking GTO 2012, a more badass, asskicking Onizuka. |

Oh god so fantastic. I have too many good things to say about this drama. I think I would even be willing to say it's better than the original. That might partly be due to my favorite GTO character actually being there rather than being morphed together with Danma. My Saejima love was increased by being portrayed perfectly by Yamamoto Yusuke. Overall amazing casting, great acting and of course, GREAT story. It is Great Teacher Onizuka afterall. lol |

Onizuka in this remake is certainly more badass and apparently has more teachings to offer to the students.
Overall a predictable (well, it's a remake!) but entertaining series. |

Akira is no Sorimachi but I grew to like his Onizuka. All the crazy side characters were a part of the enjoyment of this show. Will check out the 2nd season too. |
