Synopsis
Your family's face is a "mirror of magic." You can see the past, present, and future within." (Gail Buckley)

No matter how hard a person tries to suppress their emotions, their face and attitude cannot hide the subtle indications of joy, anger, sadness, and delight that they are feeling. "A person's life can be seen in their face." That is what the heroine of this drama, Mizuho Hirano thinks of people's faces. Mizuho, who is a police officer that works drawing composite sketches, has the unique ability to perceive what people say and read their faces.

This drama is based on the book "Face," written by the popular mystery novelist, Hideo Yokoyama. In the police department, a truly male-dominant workplace, female police officers are considered "good for nothings." Although working in such an environment, Mizuho does her best to comfort crime victims.

Unlike the detectives who do the actual work to solve a crime, Mizuho is not a super-heroine who can solve crimes herself. She approaches victims and tries to help them uncover their real feelings, which are usually locked deep inside their hearts. "Face" remains faithful to the realistic detail of the original novel, while blending in the romance between Mizuho and her colleague, Kosuke Nishijima. By also bringing out the puzzling past of Mizuho in a way that only a drama can, viewers are sure to be kept on the edge of their seats.

As a child, Mizuho was raised in an orphanage, so she has no recollection of her parents. But over time, she begins to recall some parts of her childhood. What secrets will she uncover about her parents?

At times with a gentle look in her eyes, and at other times with eyes blazing with fierce determination, Mizuho tries to uncover the real truth behind each crime, and the criminals involved in them-criminals who had no choice but to commit those crimes.

1. Odagiri Joe めっちゃかっこよかった〜 [Rating: 9/10]
Lemme just say that Odagiri Joe was so kakkoii. He plays this detective with a past that had made him not control himself when he is with a criminal. And just watch him pounding on these bad guys. I know I shouldnt be such a pro-violence and all but heck he was so kakkoii. and Nakama Yukie? was real cute too.

3. Good plots, but the rest didn't hold up [Rating: 7/10]
I like the plot, there are plenty of them, and each episode deals with a specific case that the characters must solve. The leading lady, of course, uses her drawing skills, and more or less is a factor in cracking each case. The drama doesn't evolve just around that, but rather uses the sketches as a basis. There's really a lot more to the plot than just catching the bad guys. Odgiri Joe's character as well as Yukie's develop throughout the drama, but there's not really much depth, and I can't really feel for neither one of them, especially Yukie's.
One thing that bothers me with this drama is how hardly anyone in the police force ever uses guns, that's just too unrealistic for me. I can't fathom the cops going around chasing the bad guys and having to subdue them with their bare hands. And when the gun is finally used, it's such a big deal. Also, they make all the guys at the police station seem like such chauvinists, don't know if they're trying to make a point or something, but I think it was too much, and didn't relate to the drama at all. (If it were so, it would be a drama about Yukie's attempt at establishing equality in the police station). In the beginning, you'd think she would fight her way through and get recognition by her male colleagues and make her point that women are just as capable, but that's not what happens, and at the end, you're left wondering, what's with all that emphasis on the male chauvinism anyway????

4. Impressive! [Rating: 8/10]
Personally I love detective investigation themed dramas. Therefore I bought this drama without hesitation. I first noticed Yukie Nakama in the movie 'GAME' and then in 'TRICK'. Her acting was impressive in both shows, esp in 'TRICK'! In 'Kao', she portrays an orphan with a talent for reading and drawing people's faces. Her acting impressed me a lot and her chemistry with Joe Odagiri kept me watching disc after disc without feeling tired. The cases shown were not very interesting compared to 'TRICK' and 'Kindaichi'. This drama focuses more on the emotional side of humans. Definitely worth a watch!

6. just a response [Rating: ?/10]
I haven't had a chance to watch this drama yet but I just had to respond to one of the other reviews.

The reason that none of the police officers in the series use guns is because guns are illegal in Japan. Until not so long ago, not even police officers were supposed to carry them. Because of the increased violence in Japan police officers are beginning to carry them on a daily basis. So the drama is actually accurately representing the Japanese attitude toward guns.

The chauvanistic slant is probably also accurate. Women weren't common in the workforce until the 1980's. It was only in the last 10 years or so that women were allowed to wear skirts in the workplace.

I'm looking forward to watching the series. ^_^

Not your typical drama, good but not my kind of drama. Just wasn't impressive. Odagiri Joe was good in "Satorare" but I was disappionted in his role in this drama(maybe I expected too much, after his great work), Nakamura Yukie was alright. Slow, dark, and an average story. C-

Love Nakama & Odagiri chemistry in Kao. Have to admit that both have played their roles(which are a very complicated characters in my eyes) to perfection. Although some cases are pretty predictable but overall Kao is a good police story~!

I didn't know the storyline when I'm buying it. But somehow I can feel that this drama is great when I look at the vcd cover and it's true! I can't stop after watching the first episode. I like the way Odagiri Joe and Nakama Yukie look at each other. Also not to forget Ken Kaito whose really handsome in this, even thought i don't know him.

Another breathe-taking crime thriller. I've always like Japanese crime thrillers & suspense dramas. They never fail to hook me. Same goes for Kao. Like the exploration of different cases in each episode it makes the whole drama easier to digest & anyone can just pick up the plot even if he/she watches it half-way through. Especially like it when Shishima tells Mizuho not to snatch his words before he can start saying them. And Mizuho will always reply "Ok!" with an earnest look on her face.

But I still prefer Nakama in a less serious role.... like Trick and Gokusen.

It is a very good drama. Although I don't quite like Nakama in other dramas but I can't stop watching this drama from start . I haven't finish it yet but I can't wait to add my comments here . Joe Odagiri is very cool in this film esp in one scene where is stood on the top of a building. Very highly recommended. the song , KIMI GA ANATA GA by NAO is also very nice.
