2. didn't disappoint me AT ALL. [Rating: ?/10]
it's indeed EDGY for Japanese producers to tell Chinese History of Second Sino Japanese War eriod. and seriously, this is one HUGE selling point. i would still watch it if it hasnt such powerful cast. and for me a Chinese, i would say the dorama has told history as, well, what it was without making it too bloody or too political. perhaps afterall it was only a setting, the main theme is still the love between PuJie (Pu-Chieh) and Hiro and for that part it was beautifully depicted. a powerful and personal love story of two important public people. EXCELLENT music, EXCELLENT settings. very very good acting from Takenouchi that basically makes EVERYONE dimmed. for these, i give the movie an 11.

one point deducted for important historical errors.
1~ PuJie's mom didn't die in the Forbidden City which leads to,
2~ Puyi wouldn't have been able to watch her die, in fact, he didn't even get to her funeral because he wasn't allowed to leave the Forbidden City.
3~ no Qing princes EVER refer their mothers as "mothers". but "e niang"
4~ no one can refer the Emperor by name but quite EVERYONE in the dorama namedropped the Emperor as Emperor Puyi.
that is, don't ever rely this for your full history knowledge. it is supposed to be a SERIOUS dorama but when it comes to big mistakes like these i just can't help laughing, especially that when PuJie repeated saying "mother" for the nth times. yet LUCKILY, these errors remain to the very early part of the dorama, so after several laughs you can still get immersed in the love story.

another point deducted for, erm, weird Mandarin. perhaps it would be better dubbed.

still, a very very high class dorama... not your ordinary j dorama. 9/10

Yutaka did an amazing job transforming himself for this role!!! It was such a treat & even funny to hear Takenouchi Yutaka & Tokiwa Takako speaking thick-accent Mandarin, especaily Yutaka, his hardwork paid off & pronouciation really progressed in each episode. (if only he was bilingual like Takashi Kaneshiro... ) The first episode was a bit hard to follow with a lot of historic introduction but when story took off, it was really touching....

Deeply moving, with first rate performances by Tokiwa and Takenouchi, defines this based on a true story drama as a not to be missed classic. It is subtle not flashy so if you are looking for something snappy go elsewhere.

This is a quality WWII period drama with a top notch cast. The leads are great and the storyline is quite touching. If you are a fan of either Yutaka Takenouchi or Takako Tokiwa then this is a must see short series.

Great casts. Very different from most dorama. I like this alot. Chinese spoken was not that good...however, leading casts made a considerable efforts to speak the language!
7. Comments by juliana_phang [Rating: 8/10]
takenouchi yutaka might looked a lil silly here, but his performance is perfect enough to cover his silliness.
i was surprised to see that they spoke in mandarin, n they did it pretty good.. asahi did a good job in portraying the life of this couple trying to unite the chinese n japanese..

Great drama, i think takenouchi yutata's acting is quite good. as for japanese speaking chinese...not bad. at least i can understand more than half not looking at the subtitles.

Didn't know the history btwn the Japanese and the Manchurians so it was confusing for me... maybe a little homework on history before watching would help... I love the music tho....

Simply beautiful. It made me sob so many times that I cannot remember.
I do not have a great knowledge about Japan or China's history but as a simple person, I found this drama amazing, touching. Deserves a 10.

Good acting by Takenouchie, not particularly fond of Tokiwa's acting. Not sure about the real history, but watching it from Japanese production point of view, I think it's pretty much obvious to assume that they have changed so much of the ACTUAL history. B+

It's a Japanese version of China Last Emperor. Excellent, deep & meaningful drama. Yutaka Takenouchi, Takako Tokiwa, and Takeshi Sorimachi are great.

a very neat drama. never thought the japanese will act out such a story about the Chinese history. Better than my expectation in a lot of ways, if only the actors can speak even better Mandarin...
