Synopsis
Bitter is the appropriate adjective for all the characters in Nyokei Kazoku (Thursdays, 10 p.m., TBS network). Reiko Takashima plays the 35-year old eldest daughter of a wealthy company president. He has passed away leaving behind three daughters who all dislike each other, a mistress (Ryoko Yonekura) and a best friend and business associate, Ono, played by the great character actor Isao Hashizume. Ono is handling the estate but definitely does not deserve such trust, being involved in all sorts of backroom financial shenanigans.

Hovering in the background is the head of a Japanese traditional dance school (Katsunori Takahashi) who is covering his financial bets by going after both the eldest sister and the mistress. Takashima and Yonekura make believable rivals. In fact, there has been some wide show chatter insinuating that they were rivals on the set of this drama too.

The acting of all the characters is good, and those who are fascinated by the clever manipulations of a grand inheritance battle will probably enjoy this series.

1. too little content to bulid a series [Rating: 5/10]
there is only one and essentially one theme in all 11 episodes of this seires: sibling bickerings over properties left by a mega rich father, who also happened to have a mistress about the same age as the daughters. i was hoping for some interesting plot development but there wasn't any. it seems this drama was only produced in order to fill the time slot for whatever broadcasting company that produced it.

I just couldn't get into this series. Every episode it just seemed like a whole bunch of drama where everyone is mad and mean to everyone else. In my opinion, the episodes were all very similar and I got bored of it quick...real quick. Sorry, but I just didn't enjoy watching this one.

3. AWESOME! [Rating: 10/10]
So I watched the first episode, and the first thing I thought was gman, this one is gonna be slowh. Then I started the second episode. I donft know what happened exactly, but suddenly I couldnft sit still until I had soaked up the entire series!

The plot really surprised me. It surprised me because never before have I seen such a group of vindictive characters! I mean, nearly every character introduced had evil ulterior motives. No one was honest. No one begged the viewers of this drama to love them, or sympathize with them. Nor did any of these characters force us through emotional torment. The plot was really gripping as well. There are so many schemes being revealed, and so many truths being unearthed among the lies that it was hard to pull away from the screen. Each episode ended in a moment of anxious. It was hard not to keep going with each episode.

The characters, and the actors who played them, were AMAZING. Yonekura Ryoko was fabulous. This is the first time Ifve seen her in this type of role and she was perfect. Regardless of the fact that shefs gthe mistressh, and that, really, she should be condoned for her sinful actions (according to the evil sisters), you canft help feeling for her. I mean, regardless of her status, she was actually in love. At the same time, however, Reiko Takashima played her role so majestically that you almost sympathize with HER. From all the awesome actresses/actors in this drama, Reiko-san impressed me the most. The way she would tilt her head, just so, and give you that nasty lookc >>shudders<<

All the wickedness aside, this is a completely believable storyline. Ifm thoroughly impressed, And, as the icing on the cake, the conclusion fits the plot nicely. I also love the little twist in the last scene with Fuminofs (Ryokofs) final glance at the audience. Mwahahaha.

4. Outstanding Keigo [Rating: 10/10]
I was quite surprised to read the earlier reviews posted here. Everyone seems to have missed a major point to this drama. Specifically, this the the finest drama I've ever seen for modern Keigo. At home and in the Ginza store, modern Keigo is used quite heavily. This is easier to follow if you use a JP-dubbed DVD. This drama is like a mini-course in how to speak Keigo correctly, particularly in a work setting (vital if you plan to live in Japan).

A wonderful premise gone awry for some odd reason. The hatefulness and pure evilness of the sisters makes you not want to watch--and the mysterious man in care of the will and its affairs...it was hard to figure out, very frustrating.

A daytime soap, sort of. The pace is slow as the dialogues are long (4 nobleness) and repetitive (e.g. by the sisters who have the same goal). All of the characters could have been sharper and more distinctive. However, it is the plot that keep you watching. •Ä‘q—ÁŽq has been cold & dry till the end. 5+1

This drama took my breathe away. Though many may think the whole drama's just dwelling upon one theme - the will left behind by the late father, I think it brought out all that bitterness, selfishness & evil that live in everyone. Like Yonekura Ryoko's strong character in the show. She really shone. Money is not the root of all evil, human beings are.
