Actually there is cost with every call. If you call a local number, I think it's 0.1 cents/min, or something quite small. Long distance calls cost 5 cents/min depending on what plan you have.

Incidentially, isn't calls within Japan cost Y10/min? Since I use the magnetic calling cards, I'm not sure.

calling another Skype user is free but not free calling say like a person down the street, you get charged the same rate. Just think of it..

Calling from the internet, then having to go into the Telephone network.

here are the rates

really depends, doch.

if you call land-line to land-line, it's more expensive than calling cellphone to cellphone. if you call land-line to cell, it's expensive. if you call long distance, that's also quite expensive.

here's some advice: when you stick that phone card into the payphone, it often displays a certain amount of minutes - this is NOT accurate. not even close. i called my friend (different prefecture, but not a cellphone) and i had about 16min on the display. less than five min later, it was all gone.

as i saw the minutes dropping, and so i dropped 10yen into the payphone. nothing. i dropped 100yen. nothing. another 100yen. nothing. the call cut off. i hung up, and my change popped out. i guess if you use a calling card, you can't add to the call by dropping in more cash??

Yu Yamada is big here, saw a bunch of advertisements, and poster boards of her from cell phone stores voda phone, and look for her everywhere on magazines and all over in japan along with Aya Ueto. For good J-idol goods i recommend Akihabara, and Nakano Broadway Mall, spend a good part of your day shopping for anime/j-idol stuff. Japan, there is so much to do, and the subway/train systems are extremely confusing for the Gajin, but you will start to get use to it after a few days or so. I am going to miss it and i took a ton of pix here, so it was worth the time and money, I am going to head back home soon, with Japan in mind. Done so much and saw so many beautiful J-girls, kind of makes me want to move out here for numerous reason. Bonk

jet-lagged some, but all so worth it. Just got back from my trip to japan. The flight took 10hr 40min going, and 8hr 30 min coming back. Makes me just want to go again and again, even better move out and teach english for a year or so. you should look into that flight $704, that is a good airfare, does that include tax? my flight was $716, plus $124 tax/fees, so it was $840 total.
btw: i took some pix of Yu Yamada passing by large advertisments of her by store windows, etc....she is quite popular here. I am sure they have tons of mag's, photobooks, and j-idol cards here on her, i know there is a lot of Aya Ueto in japan. I will try to post some Yu pix sometime, if i can figure out how to upload from my digicam/hd computer onto here, the pix is high res, so it might be awhile. Bonk

thanks, where do i begin, i had so much fun, and i could spend all day in Akihabara and Nakano all day looking at anime/j-idol stuff.
btw: I saw some good photobooks on Yukie, around 2800 yen, didn't get a chance to get hers, you could possibly get it off the internet, but you will have to pay the shipping costs.
Also, just started collecting j-idol cards, they have stores there and i got some, chinatsu, aya-chan, miyako, and others....didn't get any yukie, but quite sure they had a lot of her too.
yeah, tons of pix while in japan, but only a few of j-girls up close, i only asked a few of them to take there pix. Bonk

thanks everyone!, i had such a great time in Japan!, spent a lot, but it was so worth it!, i am jet lagged, it's 10pm here in so-cal Sunday and it is currently 2pm Monday in Japan, so i am a bit off on the time, so it will take awhile to adjust again.

will try to post some pix from my trip sometime soon, they are high res pix though, so it might be awhile to post. Bonk
