All about preference. I like JAL. I get mileage from them for every trip I take. I guess if you go to Japan enough, it's worth it to get the mileage bank. The mileage has a validity of 2 years. So if you don't go enough, it's not worth it. You can also get the family JAL mileage. That one will let mileage pile up from different members of your family. (Whoever is enrolled with you) But unlike the individual one, the family one costs you about $35.00USD/year.
ANA is good too! The service is excellent! (IMO) Better than JAL's service. ANA doesn't have as much specials as JAL does though.
I wouldn't fly on Northwest ever again. Absolutely HORRIBLE service. (IMO)
China is so-so. But when you have the other carriers, why would you settle for less?
service schmervice. altho it is great to have good service, but I go to whoever can give me better PRICING. It's all about the $$$ baby! Out of the 3 regular airlines from DC that goes to JPN, (ANA,JAL,NW) I would really prefer ANA for their awesome service, but they are the most expensive, so I usually go with NW.
On a side note, I don't know how true it is or not, but I have heard from more than one source that JAL is runned (or parts of) by yakuza. _________________

If manga is the only reason someone would have for going to Japan, they are really missing out on a lot.
AMEN. A-f***ing-MEN. They are just comics and you can get them wherever you are by ordering online, probably. A couple people I studied abroad with were HUGE anime and manga freaks. They spent most of their damn time buying anime crap and manga. When we'd ask them why they were doing that, they'd usually reply with something like "Anime and manga is what Japan's all about!" and it made me want to vomit in disgust. Um, NO. Sure, shopping is an excursion and we all do it while abroad. Buy some stuff you like. But don't make it the basis of your trip.

WHAT? You mean people in JPN DON'T have pink or blue hair? Fly on brooms, have magical powers, have monsters for pets/playpals, and live in a "ryokan" with a bunch of girls? Damn, it ain't worth going!!! _________________

WTF.. that can't be true?? I thought ANA would be a little cheaper.. I have lots of time to check stuff over.

Yeah, I sometimes feel that way too. I realize that Japan isn't all manga, anime and games now. I'm not that interested in anime and manga in the first place so I usually like to spend time in Japan embracing the culture and traditions as well as the local food. Not to mention some nice sightseeing opportunities around.
I wish I was in Japan, still got to wait till July till I can go. Even still, it would be my 2nd trip there..... I can't wait.
Yeah I saw too many people in the dorms at the uni I studied in, in Japan spend like 80% of their time in the TV room with anime or playing PS2. I feel like their time in Japan totally passed them by.
BTW my plane tickets for this May to Kansai Int. cost me $1000. I'm flying United Airlines, from JFK in New York. _________________

That's not too bad, about normal. When I went last May, I flew United Airlines from Philly to Narita. It cost me $800. United didn't seem bad either, but I never flew through anyone else so I'm the last person to critique much. I think your return time makes a difference. Are you staying long or just a short trip?

yeah, thats just to narita. usually, for me, it's another leg to naha int'l, which would add another $350/$450. _________________

Hi,
I'm considering fulfilling my dream of going to Tokyo, Japan for a vacation.
Anyone recommend any good vacation packages websites or travel agencies in the Bay Area, California? I tried expedia.com, but it is still rather expensive... I'm sure there are lots of good deals out there, but I need help finding them. Thanks for your help in advance.

$300-$400?? Sounds like a sweet deal. Of course, you have to consider food and a place to stay, which could be pricey.
