Ah, Shikoku, well... It's ok for a movie, don't expect anything great. It's really beautifully photographed but don't expect any real horror. If you've seen Kakashi, with Kou Shibasaki, then you can figure out how Shikoku goes along. The plots are quite similar, just the settings are different. Just like Kou in Kakashi, I consider Chiaki in Shikoku to be the highlight of the movie. The movie itself is solid work, but it's not really filled with unexpected events and incidents, not really outstanding, more like a standard job.
But do you know what day it is?
Do you even have the slightest idea?
Yes, today is the 10th of October...
And what does that mean?
Well that's simple...
TODAY IS CHIAKI'S 21st BIRTHDAY!
And Scrapheaven started showing on the 8th. The premiere seemed to have been quite crowded from what I was told. Isakana-san, who's so kind and usually translates CK's diary entries for the CK yahoo group, said he couldn't get a ticket for any of the showings with stage greetings (CK appeared twice in Shibuya and twice in Shinjuku).
Another funny detail I read was, that, just like at the Last Quarter premiere last year, her birthday was pulled into the center of attention. It seems that she received a bunch of flowers, a cake and a pair of sunglasses from Joe Odagiri (little nod to her role in Scrapheaven I guess). And, from what I've read, Joe Odagiri said something along the line of, that Chiaki's birthday is more important than the opening day of the movie. Clever guy he is |

She's so classic in kimono... Really, you could easily put her next to some of the many vintage photographs with geisha on them, give her the right hairstyle and you wouldn't see a difference. I think some 100 years ago she'd been THE star of Gion or Potoncho.

That's one of the reasons I like her. Take that smile. It's not printed on the face, glued to it, or otherwise attached and drilled into the face, like you have it with so many, especially Western, actresses on such occasions. It's natural. |
