Many of you seem to be interested in learning Japanese after watching animes and dramas. My advice is first work on your vocabulary as much as possible then worry about grammar. You will need both to understand the language but you can't get anywhere without the vocabulary. I think verbs should be first, then nouns, and then adjectives. You should have a program for yourself with quantitative objectives, i.e. 200 verbs, 200 nouns, 200 adjectives but broken down by weeks and your time table.

If you are really serious, I would advise taking a real class with a native Japanese teacher, if possible. After that, its a matter of discipline and practice.

If you need a text book suggestion, I recommend Japanese for Everyone. It's well written and dispenses with romaji (English based Japanese) very quickly so that you focus on real Japanese. Reading the Kanji is also excellent but I forgot the author, Hepburn? Anyway, good luck!

One last thing, watching dramas/animes without subtitles is extremely helpful since you learn vocabulary in context-visually and orally. Use a newspaper or something to hide the subtitles after you watch the first time.

And for online dictionaries, I prefer Jim Breen's WWWJDic for both E-J and J-E online look ups. It's constantly updated so it's better than my Cannon Wordtank.
