Some advice on lowering cholesterol and controlling blood sugar levels in a diabetic:

A placebo-controlled study done in Pakistan demonstrated that taking cinnamon in 1-, 3-, or 6-mg doses every day lowers fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, LDL ("bad cholesterol"), and total cholesterol after 40 days. This could be a solution to someone who wants to lower their cholesterol levels (especially those with a cardiac family history) or to control their blood glucose levels without resorting to pharmacetically-designed drugs.

My friend regularly takes cinnamon and although she has all the risk factors for diabetes, she has managed not to develop it yet. Her doctor even asked her three times in one visit if she was sure she doesn't have diabetes. And her cholesterol levels are great (she's not on any of the "statins" either, e.g. atorvastatin (lipitor), simavastatin (zocor)).

Hmm, you could be right: IIRC, there's viral pneumonia and bronchial pneumonia. I had bronchial pneumonia.

Mine started as bronchitis but is was bacteria based not viral. I think the Gym was the source as a woman was walking around hacking and coughing over all the machines three before I got sick. bleh

Actually, pneumonia is inflammation of a certain part of the lungs and is a diagnosis with many different origins. It can be classified as bacterial, viral, fungal, parisitic, or just plain unknown (idiopathic). It is diagnosed in the hospitals mainly by chest x-rays, followed by sputum cultures.

It is usually contagious if your immune system is poor, and you inhale it from someone else. But you can develop pneumonia just from the bacteria that live in your mouth. People who have swallowing problems might inadvertantly swallow the bug into the lungs and not cough it back up, eventually leading to the bug making it's home in warm, moist lungs. Voila! Pneumonia.

Then again, healthy people can come down with it, too. However, not everyone will get it. As a nurse on a critical floor, most of my patients have pneumonia and I haven't been sick once since starting. Eve just happened to be one of the unfortunate. Shake Head

So desu.

I guess all it takes is just for the right circumstances to occur and the opportunistic bacteria/virus will take hold... Sweat

From Yahoo! Tech:

Bodybugg Counts Those Extra Holiday Calories

It's impossible to watch what you eat during the holiday season when you constantly have food tempting you at every turn. The worst part is some of us really want to stay slim until the New Year's Eve party and possibly beyond, so how do we prevent any holiday weight gain?

There are plenty of gadgets to help you manage your weight, but the Bodybugg armband caught my eye because bloggers keep talking about, and gyms are now pushing it to customers. According to the site, this tiny device about the size of an MP3 player is supposed to be worn all day on your right arm to track calories you burn and give you an idea of the amount of calories you should consume. It's also been featured on NBC's "The Biggest Loser" as a tool the contestants use to manage their calorie consumption.

Reviews have been mixed, and from what I've read there are some things I'm not thrilled about. For one, the device is too expensive and requires a monthly subscription to an online program. It only runs on Windows, and the worst part is you have to input the type of food you eat every day so that it can track your calorie intake. That would probably be the hardest part for me, since I'm usually pressed for time.

From Yahoo! Health:

Mediterranean diet lengthens Americans' lives

Mon Dec 10, 6:29 PM ET

Eating the Mediterranean way could help you live longer, according to the first study to look at how the dietary pattern relates to mortality in a US population.

Men whose diets were closest to the Mediterranean ideal were 21 percent less likely to die over five years than men whose diets were least Mediterranean-like. Similar results were seen in women.

"These results provide strong evidence for a beneficial effect of higher conformity with the Mediterranean dietary pattern on risk of death from all causes, including deaths due to cardiovascular disease and cancer, in a US population," Dr. Panagiota N. Mitrou of the University of Cambridge in the UK and colleagues conclude.

A number of studies have linked the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fish, fruits and vegetables and nuts and low in dairy foods and red meat, to health benefits, the researchers note in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

They looked at diet and mortality in 380,296 men and women, 50 to 71 years old, who were participating in the National Institutes of Health-AARP Diet and Health Study.

For both men and women, the researchers found, the risk of death from any cause over the five-year follow-up period was lower for those with the most Mediterranean-like diets. Deaths from cancer or cardiovascular disease were also significantly lower in this group.

The benefit was especially strong in smokers who were not overweight, who nearly halved their risk of death if they closely followed the Mediterranean diet pattern. Smokers may have had the most to gain from the antioxidant and blood fat-lowering effects of Mediterranean-style eating, Mitrou and colleagues suggest.

I heard on the radio that the best way to keep teh weight off during the holidays is to break up with your loved one. If you're single, you tend to gain less weight.

At first I was like "EH?!" But than I thought about it. Tis true.

From Yahoo! Health:

Meat raises lung cancer risk, too, study finds

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor
Mon Dec 10, 5:15 PM PST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - People who eat a lot of red meat and processed meats have a higher risk of several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colorectal cancer, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

The work is the first big study to show a link between meat and lung cancer. It also shows that people who eat a lot of meat have a higher risk of liver and esophageal cancer and that men raise their risk of pancreatic cancer by eating red meat.

"A decrease in the consumption of red and processed meat could reduce the incidence of cancer at multiple sites," Dr. Amanda Cross and colleagues at the U.S. National Cancer Institute wrote in their report, published in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Medicine.

The researchers studied 500,000 people aged 50 to 71 who took part in a diet and health study done in conjunction with the AARP, formerly the American Association for Retired Persons.

After eight years, 53,396 cases of cancer were diagnosed.

"Statistically significant elevated risks (ranging from 20 percent to 60 percent) were evident for esophageal, colorectal, liver, and lung cancer, comparing individuals in the highest with those in the lowest quintile of red meat intake," the researchers wrote.

The people in the top 20 percent of eating processed meat had a 20 percent higher risk of colorectal cancer -- mostly rectal cancer -- and a 16 percent higher risk for lung cancer.

"Furthermore, red meat intake was associated with an elevated risk for cancers of the esophagus and liver," the researchers wrote.

These differences held even when smoking was accounted for.

"Red meat intake was not associated with gastric or bladder cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, or melanoma," added the researchers, whose study is freely available on the Internet at http://medicine.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=get-document&doi=10.1371/journal.pmed.0040325.

Red meat was defined as all types of beef, pork and lamb. Processed meat included bacon, red meat sausage, poultry sausage, luncheon meats, cold cuts, ham and most types of hot dogs including turkey dogs.

Meats can cause cancer by several routes, the researchers noted. "For example, they are both sources of saturated fat and iron, which have independently been associated with carcinogenesis," the researchers wrote.

Meat is also a source of several chemicals known to cause DNA mutations, including N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).

Jeanine Genkinger of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and Anita Koushik of the University of Montreal said the findings fit in with other research.

well, this definitely makes sense. the FDA recommends five servings a day of vegetables and fruits. when the diet consists of a lot of meat, there's also less room in the digestive tract for other foods, such as... you guessed it: vegetables and fruits. additionally, there are many different types of antioxidants in our vegetative friends, such as vitamin c, which help fight and prevent cancer. trust me, cancer is not a pretty thing to die from. it's usually a long and drawn out affair. we had a patient in the hospital for 10 months before he died, and he finally died because the family decided that they were ready to let him go and made him a "do not rescuscitate (DNR)". Shameful Cry

also, did you know that a diet high in fiber not only keeps us regular (attention to the people who keep track of their bowel movements) but it also reduces the risk of diverticulosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain forms of cancer?

it could also go the other way around, such as overeating to deal with the empty space in your bed. or trying to fill that space, for that matter. hehe

Yup.

After I found out that my cholesterol was high (260), I completely changed my diet, increasing my fruit, vegetable, and complex carbohydrate/fiber consumption and cutting down to near-zero my starch, sugar, and red meat consumption... Now my cholesterol level is at 140. Victory! Peace!
