My goodness!!! This article could actually have turned into a episode of Soko ga Shiritai. Smile

Yes, Japanese anime is definitely a sweatshop-type industry.

One thing I really like about anime over American animation is that anime still feel like it's hand-made. Everytime I see Disney or Dreamworks come out with an animated feature, it screams computer-animated. The shading, the smoothness of the colors -- it's almost TOO perfect if you ask me. It's understood that American companies do the computer thing to cut down the cost of the overall production. Also, I think kids in America are looking for that realism... You can no longer pass something like Snow White in today's American kid culture.

So going back to the sweatshops in anime, it's very unfortunate for illustrators to work under those conditions. However, in return, the quality of their work is excellent! It's somewhat imperfect in quality, but that shows character. Smile

I agree totally. The over-emphasis of realism and the like bores me to death, as do the stories... I'll any anime over any present-day stuff from Disney/Dreamworks/etc....

Their loss.

Absolutely. The less-than-perfect nature of it makes it unique. And that much more appealing. Big Grin

This story was really interesting. I didn't realize that the illustrators had it so bad! Makes me appreciate all my animes even more.

I agree with both of you. I enjoy Japanese manga and animes much more than American animation and comic books.

I feel that Japanese animation is more endearing for some reason.

Wow never realized that animators over there have it hard. Im glad im not aspiring to become an animator. I wonder if its just as bad for people wanting to program video games over there. Thats my dream job.

Yama no Matsuei is good. The art is good and so are the stories. One thing that made me want to puke is that there were a lot of scenes that were very Yaoi-ish. Overall it's a good anime

i havent watched that one yet, but vibius mentioned that its good. I'm not too crazy about animes tackling environmental issues that's why i havent tried it yet. Just the thought of eco-friendly anime reminds me of the cartoon - captain planet. I hate that show...

I never saw captain planet. But Arjuna is ok on some levels. I think it's better than a lot of the anime that feature big battling robots from outer space and crap like that. Or teenage militant ninja fertility.

Well, I forget exactly what I posted before but the animation is top-notch ... a combination of CGI and traditional, with a beautiful color palette. They use some sophisticated computer models of plants and bugs that give them kind of a hyper-realism when shown in closeup. There are some shots of Arjuna riding on the back of her b/f's cycle, where they must have digitized from video or something. It looked great.

The story line is about average for me. The planet is in imminent peril, environmental catastrophe, news at 11, blah blah blah. That part did get a little preachy.

But there are good parts too, like Arjuna's relationship with her b/f is done pretty well, at least it was less retarded than in most anime.

The ending got a little weird. But it's hard to get those right.

I think it's only 13 episodes. You might want to try the first few to see if you like it.

doing what you love and stick with it to make a living can be REAL tough.

I'd rather be poor and happy, than rich and miserable. It does take time to adjust to the difference in living standards though...
