Excellent points. The only problem is, half the time I have no idea what I'll use. Not too long ago all I used my computer for was word, email, and of course porn. But I seem to be evolving.
You make a good point. How about flipping it around and determining what you know you won't be using it for. That could save you money on certain options like multi-processors, video cards, Blu-ray, etc.
With all the talk of external hard drives, which ones are the most reliable? How do they hold up with transfering back and forth, torrents, and video capture?

Not sure if one's more reliable than another, though krim did have a bad experience with some Buffalo external drives...
Most (all?) of 'em are just internal drives packed in an enclosure with a USB to IDE or SATA interface and an external power supply.
You could effectively buy one of those $25 USB to IDE/SATA adapters, buy an internal HDD and Voila! External storage... If you wanted additional capacity, just disconnect the HDD and attach another to the adapter... Unless you like having enclosures for every external storage device...

I'm having a rather odd problem: I downloaded an .iso of an Ai Otsuka concert in parts, then ran the joiner to join them. The .iso works fine, and I have burnt a copy to DVD OK, but when I try to move it to my external HD I get a message saying the disc is full and to try deleting files to make more space. The thing is, the external HD has more than 400G free, and the C drive has over 80G free

Move?
Have you tried using Copy instead?
Maybe the Move function doesn't work for such a large file?

Same message when copying from DVD to ext HD? How about copying the parts? Maybe something happened when you joined them together? Some kind of write protection for the folder on ext HD? Just wild guesses... _________________

this is kind of out of the blue but something i noticed nonetheless. now that i've experienced internet speeds in japan, i will forever think that america is inferior.
on B Flets (fiberoptic) i am able to download at speeds in excess of 1000 kB/s and upload at over 100 kB/s. my limits on roadrunner cable back in the states was closer to 500 kB/s and 50 kB/s.
i'll be home for a month this summer. i think i'll be so sad... _________________

it just makes me sad that i'm paying the same price in japan and getting MUCH faster speeds. i only really began thinking about it because i'll be coming home soon. my gf is only on DSL so it's actually gonna be much slower than my time warner cable. _________________
