The newspaper reports that the Heat are now 8-5 favorites to win the NBA Championship... With the Lakers as the second pick at 11-5.

I for one am happy with this news. Why? Just something else to get Kobe motivated, though I'm sure he has plenty of motivation already. Victory! Peace!

i like that nwo picture. i went back and watched hulk hogan join the nwo after being reminded by bill simmons column.

anyways, i don't even see why the lakers would be 2nd in odds. the heat have 3 all-stars and mario chalmers... seriously, it's a team sport. the lakers didn't win with kobe, shaq, malone, and payton. i doubt the heat are winning this year.

in a couple years, on the other hand, after they've been able to bolster their roster with some mid-level exception guys, they'll be a juggernaut.

I hope something motivates Kobe to help keep D-Fish in the fold: I'd hate to see him go to Miami. bleh

Just out of curiosity, could Kobe donate some of his own money towards the cause? I don't know how good Fisher would feel about that though....

i think transactions like that are against the collective bargaining agreement. if it wasn't, who's to say that jerry buss couldn't sign fisher to a minimum contract then give him an extra $5M on the side.

Not gonna make much money betting on those odds. Doh! First they have to get out of the East, Sweat Magic are a solid team, just need a good SG and the Celts signed J. O'Neal, bit of a head case but Rivers does a good job at making players fit into his system, Applaud plus they do play as a true team. Maybe the motivation Kobe also has too is matching Jordan with 6 rings, however no one will ever catch Russell and his 11. Victory! Peace!

Yup... He was able to rein in Wallace.

I suppose O'Neal is there to replace Wallace, huh?

Lakers haven't made much noise with their acquisitions... Hope they're not standing pat, 'cause no one else is.

Don't know much about Blake, but is he a worthy replacement for D-Fish? Sweat

So what you're telling me is that people from Cleveland have no class. Seriously though, that letter didn't help the city of Cleveland other than spew hate towards a man that gave them 7 great years.

No, because your statement assumes everyone in Cleveland is a basketball or Cavs fan. What I'm saying is that Cavs fans are disappointed and angry at Lebron's decision to leave. Gilbert's letter reflected that anger. Even though Gilbert was criticized outside of Cleveland, I'm sure he had the support of Cavs fans. Lebron for sure revived that Cavs team, but he never won a NBA championship and that's a city that hasn't won a professional sports title in years. Also, I've never seen a "classy" disgruntled sports fan. Mr Green

Not really, Wallace only showed up during the playoffs. During the regular season he did nothing, there was little to no effort by him. Sweat
O'Neal was brought in to replace Perkins who is injured. From what I've heard originally they were going to trade Perkins, but then he got injured and no one wanted him.

So Wallace was just riding coattails for the most part?

I didn't know LeBron starred in "Roots."

=====================

Jesse Jackson: Cavs owner sees LeBron as 'runaway slave'
July 11, 2010
CBSSports.com wire reports

CHICAGO -- Jesse Jackson criticized Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert on Sunday, saying Gilbert sees LeBron James as a "runaway slave" and that the owner's comments after the free-agent forward decided to join the Miami Heat put the player in danger.

Shortly after James announced his decision last week, Gilbert fired off an incendiary letter to Cleveland's fans, ripping the 25-year-old and promising to deliver a title before James wins one. He called James' decision "cowardly" and later told The Associated Press he believes James quit during a handful of Cavaliers playoff games.

"He has gotten a free pass," Gilbert told the AP in a phone interview late Thursday night. "People have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."

Jackson said Gilbert's comments were "mean, arrogant and presumptuous."

"He speaks as an owner of LeBron and not the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers," the reverend said in a release from his Chicago-based civil rights group, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. "His feelings of betrayal personify a slave master mentality. He sees LeBron as a runaway slave. This is an owner-employee relationship -- between business partners -- and LeBron honored his contract."

Messages were left Sunday night seeking comment from Gilbert, the Cavaliers and James.

Jackson also called Gilbert's comments an attack on all NBA players and said the owner should face a "challenge" from the league and the players' association.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank declined comment.
