I think GTO is one of the best Japanese shows I've ever seen. It's very hilarious but at the same time full of life lessons.

Fuji TV will be making a remake of popular drama “GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka)” starring EXILE’s performer AKIRA. Recently, more cast members for the upcoming drama have been revealed.

Revealed cast members include Takimoto Miori as the heroine “Fuyutsuki Azusa”, Shirota Yu as “Danma Ryuji” (Onizuka’s friend and manager of a cafe), Yamamoto Yusuke as “Saejima Toshiyuki” (Onizuka’s friend and police officer), Tayama Ryosei as the head teacher “Uchiyamada Hiroshi”, and Kuroki Hitomi as the principal “Sakurai Ryoko.” Also, Kawaguchi Haruna, Takada Sho (Johnny’s Jr.), Morimoto Shintaro (Johnny’s Jr.), and Nakagawa Taishi have been added to the cast as students in Onizuka’s class.

“GTO” is originally Fujisawa Toru’s popular manga, which was serialized on “Weekly Shonen Magazine” during 1997 to 2002, and it was adapted as a drama series starring Sorimachi Takashi back in 1998. The drama series became a big hit as it received an average rating of 28.3 % (in Kanto region). It was also made into a movie in 1999.

This time, “GTO”s new series “GTO -SHONAN 14DAYS- ” (serialized on “Weekly Shonen Magazine” during 2009 ~ 2011) will also be included in the story. The realistic, universal themes like bullying, conflicts with parents, love, abuse, dreams for the future.

“GTO” will start airing in July on Fuji TV.

Just a sidenote: Akanishi Jin was originally supposed to play Onizuka but as another punishment for his marriage/fatherhood adventures he got canned from this as well. Poor Jin, just can't get a break!!

Watched the "new" GTO ep. 1. I thought it was decent and Akira is not a bad actor. I'm not going to try to compare this to the original.

GTO 2-hour special to air in October

On September 11th, it was announced that the remake of ‘GTO‘ (Fuji TV) is going to return with a two-hour special episode in October.

The ‘GTO’ remake stars EXILE’s AKIRA as ‘Onizuka Eikichi’ and just aired its final episode on the 11th. In the upcoming special, he will have to face corrupt politicians to protect the children of an orphanage that’s on the verge of getting closed.


The special will be set several months after the events in the drama. ‘Onizuka’ gets wind of the imminent closure of the ‘Smile Duck’ (‘White Swan’ in the original manga) orphanage due to a certain town development plan and some conflicts of interest for the politicians involved. Of course, he can’t just let that happen, and together with his students from class 2-4, he’s going all out in order to protect the orphanage.

Most of the actors from the drama will reprise their roles in the special, including Takimoto Miori, Kuroki Hitomi, Shirota Yu, Yamamoto Yusuke, Kawaguchi Haruna, and so on.

Some new characters from the manga are also going to appear in the special, albeit with small changes as is common for a remake. ‘Fujisaki Shinomi’ is a woman working at the orphanage who is secretly in love with Onizuka. ‘Wakui Mayu’ is a very handsome student who excels in studies and sports. ‘Mayu’ recently became a member of class 2-4, but he used to live in the said orphanage until he was adopted by a man who is now a candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming elections. There will also be a character named ‘Ageha’ who grew up in the same orphanage as ‘Mayu’ and will do anything to protect him. The cast members for these new characters have yet to be announced.

Fuji TV will air the special episode at 9:00pm on October 2nd.

FUJI TV to air another 'GTO' special after New Year


On November 16th, Fuji TV announced that they are going to air another special episode of the popular drama remake ‘GTO‘ starring EXILE’s AKIRA. The new special is titled ‘GTO Oshogatsu Special (tentative)‘ (lit. ‘GTO New Year’s Day Special’) and is going to air on January 2nd, 2013.

‘GTO Oshogatsu Special’ is already the second special after ‘GTO Aki mo Oni Abare Special‘ which aired this fall. This time teacher ‘Onizuka Eikichi’ (AKIRA) and his friends have to search for the mother who abandoned her three-year-old baby. Moreover they have to deal with a bomb that is creating quite a panic. Meanwhile they are being observed by a mysterious man who will be played by fellow EXILE member MATSU.

Popular gravure idol and ‘erotic queen’ Dan Mitsu, who is currently portraying a masochistic woman in the movie ‘Watashi no Dorei ni Narinasai‘ alongside actor Itao Itsuji, is also going to make an appearance as a hostess in the special.

The rest of the cast will be made up of the same actors who already participated in the drama.
