My brother is pretty upset that it's currently not supported by Verizon: he can't watch the UCLA games.
Well, I searched through my channel guide, and hey, I do have the Pac-12 Network (it's listed as Pac-12 LA) as part of my cable package. Great--another channel I probably won't watch.
Last night's Seattle/San Francisco game had two teams going at it with hammer and tongs. Only one TD scored between them. Old school football. Quite enjoyed it.
Maybe you could give Norm Chow some help with his defense. They've only given up less than 35 points once.
Chow's defensive coordinator is Thom Kaumeyer, a veteran coach with a decent resume. (Kaumeyer's background is interesting: he's a hapa from the San Diego area who coached in Japan for a couple of years early on in his career). Unfortunately the other defensive coaches on Hawaii's staff have very very limited experience; I've caught snatches of Hawaii's games on TV this year, and they look bad, particularly on defense, but their offense isn't too good either. It's hard enough trying to coordinate a defense, but when you also have to spend a lot of time coaching your coaches which is what I imagine Kaumeyer is doing, it makes things even more difficult.
This past Saturday was terrific for college football. Alabama vs. LSU was an excellent game. For the Tide to come back and win in Baton Rouge, playing in the most storied night venue in all of college football was impressive. At the same time, the game showed that Bama is not the invincible team that many people thought.
Oregon took one step forward and one step back in their video game victory over USC. Yeah, they beat a pretty good team, but giving up 51 points should be of major concern for the Ducks.
Pitt looked horrible in crunch time versus Notre Dame. They had the game won, both in regulation and in overtime, but played shockingly bad when all they had to do was play decent. Talk about the luck of the Irish . . . .
Kansas State was impressive against a pretty good OSU team; the Wildcats play well in all phases, but if their outstanding QB can't go this week or gets injured down the road, it'll put a huge dent in their national title hopes.
Michigan State lost to Nebraska in the final seconds, in part due to a terrible pass interference call by the officials. Reminded me of those NFL replacement zebras.
Glad to see Oregon St. continue to win; betcha no one predicted the Beavers would have only one loss this late into the season. They've got the Civil War coming up though. Still, not enough credit goes to how good a job Mike Riley and his staff do year after year with personnel that is not as talented as their opponents.
Watched some of the NFL Monday night football game. It's been awhile since I've seen two teams who tackled (or tried to tackle) so poorly.
Darrell Royal, the head coach at the University of Texas from 1957 to 1976, passed away. He won two national championships at UT and never had a losing season. Among the most iconic coaches of his era, he introduced the Wishbone offense to college football (although it was really his assistant coach, Emory Bellard, who was largely responsible for developing it). Re: Darrell Royal. I can't help but think of Frank Broyles whenever I think of coach Royal. I was more of an Arkansas fan than a Texas fan. Dunno if it was the goofy hats (do those things qualify as hats?) or the "Soooeeey Pig!!!" cheer, but I liked Arkansas more. Of course the 1969 15-14 game will be the one thats always remembered.

I think I mentioned this on another thread but there's a really interesting book about the game and its historical and cultural significance entitled Horns, Hogs, and Nixon Coming by Terry Frei. I remember watching the game on TV on a little black and white set; the game itself wasn't really exciting until the fourth quarter when Texas finally woke up and, in general, was sloppily played.
Frank Broyles had three significant careers. First, he was a very successful coach. Then, like Royal, he became the athletic director at his school. Finally, he teamed up with Keith Jackson to become the best college football announcing duo of all time.

It's funny, I ran across I guy I went to high school with on Facebook that lives in Oregon now. They're all raking Kelly over the coals for going for it on a 4th-and-short in the first quarter and they didn't convert.
The thing is, he's always coached liked that. If it's 4th-and-short and he's across the 50, he'll usually go for it and it usually works, just this one time it didn't.
The guy is 44-7 and they're calling him an idiot. Those Oregon fans sure got spoiled fast.
