101 Kaime no Puropozu [101
Rating: 9/10 (Watched)
The first drama that got me hooked on J-dorama. "Boku wa shinimashen! Suki dakara, shinimashen." Is there a more famous line in all of Japanese drama? Unfortunately, the drama's second half twist was too unbelievable--although there is a school of thought that says THAT is what makes J-dorama interesting. Still, the first six episodes were so good and funny, it still rates a 9. But then, maybe you have to be a plain guy, like Takeda Tetsuya, to appreciate it.
29-sai no Kurisumasu [29
Rating: 10/10
Ai no Uta [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
This was okay. Not bad, not great.
Anego [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Shinohara Ryoko... enough said.
Antique [
Rating: 5/10 (Watched)
Asakusa Fukumaru Ryokan [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Nishida Toshiyuki needs to do some sit ups or something, but still he's pretty funny.
Attention Please [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Ueto Aya is just perfect in this role. She has never looked cuter.
Bengoshi no Kuzu [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
This turned out to be much more interesting that I had anticpated. Toyokawa was pretty good in a rather unflattering role... well, unflattering for him.
Brother Beat [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
An okay single-parent drama. Is it me or do single-parent dramas seem to always have children of the same gender?
Brothers [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
A single-parent drama with a Buddhist twist. I am always impressed by the fact that Nakai can act way better than he can sing...
Busu no Hitomi Koishiteru [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
This actually turned out better than I thought. I didn't like the title as it was very condescending, but the actual story of an unattractive girl hoping to hook up with the good looking guy is the female version of dramas like Train Man or 101st Marriage Proposal.
Dandori [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
So-so
Danjo Shichinin Natsu Monogatari [
Dare Yori mo Mama wo Aisu [
Rating: 2/10
Tamura is perhaps the most boring actor on J-TV ever. but I decided to watch it because of Ito Ran, but she was not good enough to carry the drama. I barely finished the first episode.
Dekichatta Kekkon [
Rating: 6/10
Densha Otoko [
Rating: 10/10
Dr. Koto Shinryojo [Dr.
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
So-so. I didn't see the first one, but I did watch the 2006 version. Someone should tell Yoshioka to cut his hair. He should have graduated from Kita no kuni kara by now.
Dragon Zakura [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Engine [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
Erai Tokoro ni Totsuide Shimatta! [
Rating: 1/10 (Watched)
Shows in which the main male character is a mamas boy who has no spine is not new, but at least there is someone to straighten him out. But Nakama Yukie's character just lets him be the wuss he is. Pathetic. I couldn't even finish the second episode.
Gal Cir [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
Although pretty corny, each episode had a relevant life lesson. Fujiki's role as a Japan-born, America-raised cowboy was irksome: Typical stereoptying and bad English. But Geronimo was a riot. His sarcasm and imitation of Shibuya gal-speak were just too funny. Shinnosuke: "Something very strange happened." (ep. 10) Geronimo: "What? Did the statue of Shibuya's faithful dog, Hachiko, turn into a chihuahua?"
Gokusen [
Rating: 7/10
Gokusen Season 2 [
Rating: 5/10 (Watched)
Haikei, Chichiue-sama [
Rating: 9/10 (Watched)
Kuramoto Soh is back. Hope this is as good as Yasashii jikan. EDIT: I'm at Episode 5 and this is becoming an enjoyable drama
Haken no Hinkaku [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Shinohara Ryoko... nuff said...
Hana Yori Dango [
Rating: 5/10
I cannot enjoy a show in which the bully is saved from himself without any kind of resolution concerning his past sins. Usually, the kid who is bullied is saved, not the bully. I can't believe I watched this to the end...
Hana Yori Dango Season 2 [
(Watched)
Hanayome wa Yakudoshi! [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
Shinohara Ryoko is one of my favorites but she should be more selective. And why Yabe Hiroyuki? The idea of a guy born and raised in Tohoku living in Tokyo and speaking with a Osaka accent is pretty ridicuous. NOTE: Keep an eye on the clock on the wall behind Taketomi (Shinohara) Akiko's sofa. It was stuck on 9:05 for a while then moved to 8:00.
Himitsu no Hanazono [
(Watched)
Hmmmm... Not very promising so far....
Hitotsu yane no shita 1 [
Rating: 9/10
Ikebukuro West Gate Park [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Ima Ai ni Yukimasu [
(Watched)
Iryu [医龍 Team Medical Dragon]
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
I think my Japanese is good enough for these dramas but the technical terms used during surgery forced me to spend more energy than I would have wanted... or I'm just lazy.
Itoshi Kimie [
Rating: 6/10
Itsumo futari de [
Rating: 7/10
Joshiana [
Rating: 7/10
Kazoku -tsuma fuzai oto no sonzai [
Rating: 4/10 (Watched)
Boooooooooring
Kekkon Dekinai Otoko [
Rating: 8/10
Abe Hiroshi is at his best when he plays a male freak, and he plays it well in Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. The fact that he plays his actual age and that he has never married (as far as I know) makes me imagine that he is playing himself and not a character... and this makes me laugh all the more...
Kiken na Aneki [
Rating: 8/10
Konya uchu no katasumi de
Kuitan [
Rating: 7/10
All this show did was make me hungry for the great food they have in Japan....
Kurosagi [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
I think they could have come up with a better ending. If Kurosaki was going to get arrested, then he should have stayed in jail... at least until Kurosagi 2.
Kyumei byoto 24 ji [
Last Christmas [
Rating: 8/10
Mukodono! [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
My Boss, My Hero [
Rating: 8/10
Nagase Tomoya has a face made of silly putty, and he simly cracks me up. I have never seen the Korean original so I can't really comment on how true it is to the original.
Natsuko no sake
Nobuta wo Produce [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
I'm not sure I understand why this is an award winning show, but then it is heads and shoulders above Hana yori dango. At least the bullied is redeemed, and the bully.
Nodame Cantabile [
Rating: 10/10 (Watched)
The final episode was a bit lacking, as if they didn't know how to resolve the relationship between Chiaki and Nodame, especially since they go to Paris together in the comic book. But still this is one of the best dramas I have seen in a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Episode 4 is classic!
Ohsama no resutoran [
Oishii Kankei [
Orange Days [
(Watched)
Pride [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
So-so hockey drama... as if there were a bunch of hockey dramas. Hahahahahahha. Kinda corny and Kimura played his corny self as usual--maybe.
Regatta [
Rating: 5/10
I'm not sure what happened here. The last few episodes were really out of synch. I wonder if this was supposed to be an eleven episode show but was brutally and clumsily edited to nine episodes due to poor ratings?
Remote [
Rating: 4/10
Ruri no shima [
Rating: 10/10 (Watched)
Oh my god, this was much better than I had anticipated. The cast of Ogata Ken and Baisho Mitsuko was brilliant. Their attention to detail in their characters really filled out this story of a young girl longing for familial love and finding it as a foster child on a small remote island near Okinawa. It was hard to believe that Narumi Riko was eleven; she looked much older, I thought at least a junior high student, but she was still very cute. she will be a stunner in a few more years.
Sailor Fuku to Kikanju [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
I think they made this a bit too cute. My memory is not so great, but I think the original movie with Yakushimaru Hiroko was grittier. The yakuza types were like real yakuza.
Saiyuuki [
Rating: 6/10
This was okay... a different take on the traditional Son Goku story. Katori Shingo was okay as Goku...
Sapuri [
Rating: 4/10
Do 20-ish year-old "men" regularly fall for older women? Is this the next permutation of Maza-kon (Mother complex)? On the heels of Akanishi falling for Shinohara in Anego, we now have Kamenashi falling for Ito Misaki. I like Ito, but I gave up after three episodes. Just not interesting enough....
Seikei Bijin [
Rating: 6/10
sengoku Jieitai [戦国自衛隊〜関ケ原の戦い〜]
Rating: 6/10
Shinsengumi [
Rating: 7/10
Slow Dance [
Rating: 7/10
Taiyou no uta [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
So sad...
Teppan Shoujo Akane [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
Did not fulfill expectations.
Teru Teru Ashita [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Although I am not really into supernatural stories, this one was rather watchable because the story didn't focus on supernatural occurances as much as it did on a spoiled young girl growing into a responsible one. The theme song by Hirakawachi Icchome--Unmei no mukou--was also very easy to listen to as well.
Tiger & Dragon [
Rating: 9/10 (Watched)
This was pretty funny, but the Japanese was pretty difficult for a non-native speaker like me, because the comedy and jokes were centered on rakugo humor, a genre I am not that familiar with. But taking the time to comprehend the jokes and comic exchanges was worth it. I'm not sure anyone could actually subtitle it adequately, but you never know...
Tokyo Tower ~Okan to Boku to, tokidoki, Oton [
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
Since I saw the TV special, and know how it ends, I think I'll pass on the series.
Tokyo Wankei [
Rating: 6/10
Trick [
Rating: 7/10 (Watched)
Trick Season 2 [
Trick Season 3 [
Umizaru [
Rating: 7/10
Unfair [
Rating: 9/10 (Watched)
Wow... This drama started off kinda slow but it began to pick up the pace around 5th episode. The twists and turns really held my interest and I couldn't stop watching it. And the ending... I kept thinking, it couldn't be... it can't be...
Wedding Planner [
Rating: 7/10
Yakusha Damashii [
Rating: 8/10 (Watched)
Better than I expected. I'm not a Matsu Takako fan but she did okay.
Yasashii Jikan [
Rating: 9/10 (Watched)
Kuramoto Soh is great at human dramas. This story of reconciliation between father and son really gets to me....
Yoshitsune [義経]
Rating: 6/10 (Watched)
This gets a 6--barely above average--for incorporating many (if not all) the stories of the Yoshitsuen legend. They should have shown more of Yoshitsune's sour qualities--he was very short tempered. And they should have given Takizawa more sword-play lessons, especially since this was his showcase vehicle.
