A more correct title would have been "What Japanese think it was like to immigrate to America". This script has more holes in it than I can remember, let's hope that Nisei (or Sansei, Yonsei or Gosei) never see it.
But, some good actors did their best with what they had to work with. Kusanagai proves once again that even if he's not as popular as Kimtaku, he's every bit his equal as an actor. Also good performances from Pinko Izumi as Tomo and Kiichi Nakai as Chokichi. |

Or, "Kuitan becomes a doctor". They tried to copy the success of "Kuitan" but it comes up short for a couple reasons.
1) In the place of Momo-chan and Igarashi they've got some faceless and colorless hospital execs that just want to close down GM. No real clash of personalites there.
2) The supporting cast does their best, but there just isn't the same chemistry like you had with the characters at Holmes Detective.

This was made before NHK decided they had to have a "star" as lead in their taigas. Here it's played by Hashinosuke Nakamura a well known kabuki actor who's only had a handful of television and movie appearances. He is great. Alongside is an excellent supporting cast that all give solid performances.
This is one of the few taigas that I didn't have to bounce back and forth when different characters appeared and say, "Who's this guy again?" I attribute that to the excellent script written by Makiko Uchidate. All the characters are distinct and the story is told in a way that made it easy to follow.
