oh just found this thread. can a mod please delete the thread i made before, for this drama? (it's locked anyway)

Puppy Dog Eyes there are depressing aspects and also relieving and hopefull portions of the ending. it's an ending you will never forget, at the very end it turns out better, but it's still depressing because of prior elements...

anyone have any idea what kind of bike hikaru drives?

It can be a happy or sad ending depending on how you interpret it. It's just one of those things where you have to watch for yourself. hehe

just finished seeing it ... i liked the drama a lot! ...

********** SPOILER ALERT *******************

as for the "famous" ending Crazy Crazy Smile i think she did not wake up, hikaru was just dreaming ... cause when he see's her awake, he goes back to sleep!

although i DO hope she did get up Puppy Dog Eyes Smile

but yeah liked the story flow definitely, was expected yet unexpected sometimes .. and sometimes it goes the NOT normal way of complicating a drama series... somehow always things worked out and then move on ..

another thing i liked was to see nanako in a FULL role first time, unlike in GTO where she was more like a supporting role.

LOOOVE the 2 songs ! Applaud

I think she woke up, but still in terrible health. I think the condition that Hikaru wants to help Michi out of is to have the ability to go through a whole pregnancy safefully without affecting her condition or the child she'd bear.

In my opinion, this is what the drama is about and what the ending means:

It's about two people who fell in love and want to remain in love but outside influences kept preventing this from occuring or wanted to prevent it from occuring.

Whether it is age difference, race difference, rich vs poor issues, etc. many obstacles exist from a couple trying to be together. This exists in every day life. This drama is about age difference which of a 17 year old guy and a 26 year old is not normally accepted.

Often times when this conflict exists...many people get affected and are hurt.

Michi's fiance was hurt initially. So was her best friend. Hikaru's mom. Michi's parents.

However...in the end...those that were sad and aggravated over this relationship...things turned out in a positive way. Michi's dad bought Michi's mom the piano she always wanted and the dad mellowed out. Michi's ex-fiance was motivated himself to get back into banking and helping people. Hikaru's mom became a nurse to start over.

And as far as if Michi woke up or not....that's up to us to decide. Even if she didn't that time....Hikaru will be there by her side when she does eventually wake up....because that's the type of love they had between each other and age doesn't matter. At least that's the way I see it. Mr Green Happy ending....right?

The strongpoint of the show is also probably to its greatest drawback. The theme of a teacher having a relationship with her student is certainly something that some may find hard to stomach, and the gloomy and dark atmosphere may not be to everyones taste. Just bear in mind that to truly appreciate this drama, one must watch it with an open mind. Remember that our society now is very much different from back then and would likely be as good as heresy to the eyes of the majority of the society of those days...

*******Spoiler Ahoy!*******

Michi's friend had a big chip on her shoulder previous to her relationship with Hikaru so she doesn't count...I couldn't stand her Bleah .

I had no problem with Michi and Hikaru because he was so close to being 18 years old. Had he been 12 *cough* then that would have been another story. But anyway, it was just a drama, fiction, so I had no problem with it. Besides, things like this do happen everyday. Even though she wasn't a teacher my great grandma was 7 years older than my great grandfather. They had a butt load of children and were happily married for over 50 years before one of them passed away. So who am I to look down on it anyway Sweat ?

As far as the ending, I just took it as it was. I didn't look for a deeper meaning or anything. She opened her eyes and so I think that she woke up. I also think so because the portrait that they showed of Michi and Hikaru at the end of the series showed them without the shackles on their ankles. The shackles were there on all the previous episodes. I took it as a positive thing. You know, kind of like a "We still have alot to work through but I think we can make it" thing.

That's just my opinion though. I liked the series.

first iLd like to say tha majo no jouken is my fave jdorama:nut: i like the way nanako and hideaki showed their love to each others . and the ost is really sweet though sad..but the thing that makes it memorable for me was the ending such a beautiful ending. i prefer happy ending coz they had struggled for their love and just like hikaruLs uncle said NthereLs sadness and hardships but thereLs happiness and joy in the end....

While I think it's a conscious decision to even up the maturity levels of the characters for audiences' acceptance, such people do exist in the world, particularly people like Michi in the first episode, there are probably a lot of them I believe. So for me I didn't find the initial characterisations manipulative.

I didn't find the romantic side of the relationship very convincing initially, a little bit forced to me in the first 2 episodes.

I think a lot has to do with people's perception, of what is a child. Once someone reach the age of 18(or 20 or 21), are they really an adult? I mean, nothing magical happens maturity-wise on most's 18th birthday. It's just society's simple rule of thumb to classify people into different categories in my mind.

I think that has to do with the general tone the writer tried to express during the story, that it tries to confront the issue head on, without hiding any aspects of the love story, just like Michi and Hikaru didn't hide the fact they are in love with each other. I agree that the story would work well with only the friendship component though.
---

For me, I like the first 2 episodes quite a lot, especially when it tackles society's expectations and the pressure Michi (or anyone of us) is under. Then, after Michi's courage rose to declare her love for Hikaru and they ran away together, I was a bit disappointed. Some of the minor characters' choices and actions just seemed too unbelieveable, the story seemed to meander without much focus, perhaps much like the characters themselves, and I couldn't really tell what they were thinking/going through. The best part of the story for me is at the end, where it rose above even the love story and really took some surprising directions to say things about how to live and carry on, and reasons to live. With this in mind, in hindsight, I think I missed quite a few things conveyed by the story and characters' transformation. I actually thought that Nanako's acting in some of early and middle parts was not that good, but now I think perhaps I really didn't understand what Michi was going through. Michi's transformation/growth throughout was really quite inspiring. I really like this jdorama a lot. I am going to rewatch this, probably another 2 or 3 times, to understand more about what the story and characters tries to convey.

For me: 9/10. at the moment, possibly more after rewatch

P.S. It didn't occur to me at all that the ending is up to intepretation. LOL
I thought Michi had really woken up. Still do actually.
