the DAD (Rakugo Master) from Tiger & Dragon...it's a total laugh man.

The actor's name is Toshiyuki Nishida. He is a big star (both literally and figuratively) in Japan. His face is instantly recognizable to the Japanese public and many of his movies have been commercial and critical successes. Nominated ten times in the Japan Academy Award Best Lead Actor category, he has won that award twice. Among the many films he has appeared in, he plays the lead character in the Tsuri Baka Nisshi series, which is now up to 15 movies (it's often compared to the Tora-san series). On the small screen, he has appeared in 10 NHK Taiga dramas. A very versatile performer, he is equally great in both comedies and dramas, and is quite natural in both contemporary and period pieces. I think he has a dominating on-screen presence and is willing to be fearless and over-the-top in his performances. Uchouten Hotel is a good example of this: in a small role he plays an iconic enka singer who in reality is a whimpering hopeless mess of a blob--a big fat crybaby who is slapped, bullied, and scolded by his manager. It takes guts to play a role like that; it takes even more guts to be the only one in the movie to appear naked (especially given Nishida's ample girth).

Thanks for the info! Yeah his name is not so familiar to me because I've only seen him a few times...but that's not to say his acting isn't superlative....he always gives thoroughly rousing performances....i loved him in Uchoten Hotel and in Tiger & Dragon...where he played a rakugo master (as you probably already know)....it was fun to see him act out the role of a storyteller because of the "characters within the character....."

Tu_triky,
I know you have expressed admiration for Yoji Yamada, and if you want to see more of Toshiyuki Nishida (not naked though), I'd recommend two movies: Gakko (A Class to Remember [1993]) and Gakko 2 (The Learning Circle [1996]). Both films were written and directed by Yamada and star Nishida. Gakko won the Best Picture award, Yamada the Best Director award, and Nishida's portrayal of a teacher at a downtown Tokyo alternative night school won him the Best Actor award. This picture also stars one of the great character actors of his generation, Kunie Tanaka as one of the students. In Gakko 2 Nishida again plays a teacher, this time in a special handicapped school in Hokkaido. Masatoshi Nagase also stars, and, as part of the plot, there's even a Namie Amuro concert thrown in. Both movies are typical Yamada: a sympathetic look at the overlooked underclass of Japanese society, alternately tragic and funny, and warmly sentimental. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll be entertained. BTW, both these pictures are available on DVD--they cost around 13 bucks each and are Hong Kong imports, with good picture quality and grammatically correct English subtitles.

Thanks again for the recommendation....I'll make a note of it...I must admit it would be great to see Nishida in other roles....his acting is so natural and believable...his facility with assuming roles really shines through.

I watched Shinobi the other night... It was pretty good. Perhaps I shouldn't have watched it while feeling tired and unwell Sad The action scenes were great though.

eh? Doror was supposed to be a boy?
I guess they specifically changed it just to have Kou and Satoshi in it
