My avatar thx you. Nifee deebiru (Okinawan dialect). Hey aho, you should start a thread with hogen, much like hiroki did with osaka ben.

Although I managed to understand Kansai-ben after living there for awhile, Kyoto-ben was very, very weird. If you've ever watched Chiyoko: Millenium Actress, there's a scene where she's a geisha in Kyoto. The inflections they use are crazy!

I have a friend who introduced me to okanomiyaki, from Osaka of course, who told me he had a real difficult time when he was a kid, moving from Osaka to Tokyo because the dialect was so different, a lot of kids would tease him and such because they just couldn't understand quite a bit of what he said... He says it took him maybe 6 months to adjust to the kanto dialect...

Just thought that was an interesting little story to share..

I can see that. But I remember kids from Kanto who moved to Osaka and they would not be teased.

Okonomiyaki is NOT one of my favorite foods. Rather have a pizza anyday.

Indeed they are 2 different "languages", with the Kyoto tougue more "feminine". Must goes back the the Gion days of the Maiko/Geisha.

Well, it doesn't seem like ahoachaude is going to see this thread, so I will do the best I can. As far as in japanese, (if don't already know), it is a word for JPNese youth for introduction. As far as the osaka-ben equivalent, I don't think there is one. But then again, aho is the authority when it comes to osaka ben.

also many okinawans talk about themself as a third person (using their own names in speech).
i cant think of many okinawan words, i forgot most of them. stayed there for 1 summer, and a week during winter break.

That's better than me. I only know "Hago" and "Haisai". Beaten Beaten Beaten

I should go back to "home" and learn how to speak. Beaten Beaten
