Asian remake of Ghost in the works

Nanako Matsushima (36) and Seung-heon Song (33) are set to star in an Asian remake of Jerry Zuckers smash hit 1990 film Ghost, taking over the roles originally played by Demi Moore and the late Patrick Swayze. In the Hollywood version, Swayze played a man who was killed during an attempted mugging and remained on earth as a ghost to warn his girlfriend (Moore) of an impending danger. The Asian version will be set in Japan.

Probably best known outside of Japan for starring in the 1998 horror film Ring, former full-time fashion model Matsushima truly made a name for herself domestically in 2002 by playing Matsu in the enormously popular NTV drama Toshiie and Matsu. In 2007, she proved herself to be a capable lead film actress with a poignant performance in Isshin Inudos Bizan.

Her co-star, Seung-heon Song, has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity over the past few years following an embarrassing scandal which threatened to derail his career when it was revealed that he had lied about his health to avoid compulsory military service. In 2008, he starred in the big-budget MBC drama East of Eden which was watched by nearly 30% of the South Korean television viewing audience. His dramas have also been broadcast in Japan, making him a big star in both countries.

Filming of the remake will begin in June with longtime NTV director Taro Otani (Gokusen) at the helm. Takashige Ichise, whos already facilitated several major Hollywood remakes of Asian films (The Grudge, Shutter), will attempt the reverse as a producer.

Distribution will be handled collaboratively by Paramount Pictures Japan and Shochiku with a release planned for sometime this fall.

Nanako Matsushima to star in TBS special to mark 70th anniversary of the end of World War II

Matsushima Nanako will be starring in the yet untitled TBS drama SP to mark the 70th anniversary since the end of WWII which will be shown in August on two nights. The drama is produced by the crew responsible for the hit drama "Hanzawa Naoki". Filming began in Shizuoka from 15 May and will also be done overseas at locations such as Shenyang and Beijing in China for a month until the end of July. This is the first time in 15 years that Matsushima is acting in a TBS drama since "Hyakunen no Monogatari" in 2000.

Matsushima plays the role of Amano Kiyo who becomes a military nurse in order to serve her country and gets married to a man in the Manchurian expedition. However, as the war intensifies, Kiyo tries to survive in the tough times after her husband dies and she has to leave her son behind in order to continue with her work. During WWII, as many as 35,000 women served as military nurses and 1,120 of them passed away in the line of duty.

Nanako Matsushima to star in Fuji TV 2016 Summer drama

Matsushima Nanako will be starring in the FujiTV Summer 2016 drama "Eigyou Buchou Kira Natsuko" (Sales Director Kira Natsuko) which will be shown from July in the Thursdays 10pm timeslot. This is her first drama series since 2013's "Kyuumei Byoutou 24 Ji Series 5". The script will be written by Inoue Yumiko who is known for dramas such as "Hirugao" and "Lucky Seven SP".

Matsushima plays the role of Kira Natsuko who got married and gave birth to her child just before she turned 40 years old and used to be a popular creative director at an advertising agency. After taking a three-year break from the workplace, she returns to work as the director of the sales department and has to struggle with juggling work and family commitments while coping with subordinates who she can't get along with. As a result of hiring a babysitter to take care of her child, her relationship with her husband suffers as a result.

In reality, Matsushima has 2 daughters who are 12 and 8 years old respectively and is also balancing work with family. With regard to her character, Matsushima commented that this drama has come at a timely juncture since it reflects the current social situation where many woman return to work after giving birth. She hopes that her character will be an encouragement to all women especially the working mothers.

Filming will begin in early June.

Nanako Matsushima to play Miho Kanno's scary neighbor in TBS 2016 Fall drama

Matsushima Nanako will be appearing in the upcoming TBS Autumn 2016 drama "Suna no Tou ~ Shirisugita Rinjin" opposite the lead Kanno Miho as the latter's scary neighbour. This is the first time in 16 years that the two actresses are appearing in the same drama since TBS' 2000 drama SP "Hyakunen no Monogatari".

In this new drama, Kanno plays a housewife Takano Aki who has just moved into a high-rise condominium complex with her family but finds herself being attacked by her neighbour Yumiko (Matsushima) who appears perfect to everyone around them yet wants to make trouble for her new neighbour by manipulating the other residents. Matsushima commented that although she and Kanno had worked together briefly 16 years ago, this is the first time when they will be spending a lot of time "fighting" each other so she is eagerly anticipating their collaboration this time.

Nanako Matsushima to star in FujiTV drama Special

Matsushima Nanako will be starring in the FujiTV drama SP "Onna no Kunshou" (A woman's badge) which will be shown next year. The drama which is based on the same-titled novel by the late Yamasaki Toyoko, features Matsushima as the heroine Oba Noriko who starts a small dressmaking school in Kansai after the end of WWII and gets embroiled into the spiral of jealousy among women in the fashion industry.

Oba Noriko was from a family operating a woolcloth wholesale business before the war happened and she lost everything as a result. Since young, she has been interested in clothes and decides to open her own dressmaking school. However, once she starts to do well, the old-fashioned industry leaders of the fashion world see her as an eyesore and subject her to harsh treatment in order to get her out of the way. With the help of Yashiro Ginshiro who teaches her business management and her students Rinko, Katsumi and Tomie, Noriko gradually builds up her business. Unfortunately, personal desires of the women and being made use of by Ginshiro causes Noriko to be hurt badly and she later meets Shiraishi, an university professor who also has emotional issues of his own.

As most of Yamasaki's novels feature male lead characters, this is one of the few where women take centrestage. For Matsushima, this is the first time that she is appearing in an adaptation of Yamasaki's novel so she commented that she is very honoured to be given this chance. As for her thoughts about her character Oba Noriko, Matsushima commented that although Oba found success as a fashion designer, she was also embroiled in jealousy, desires, love, hate and money which caused ripples in her life. As such, she hope to be able to show the amazing story depicted in Yamasaki's novel through this drama with the help of the director, staff and her co-stars.

In addition, the clothes worn in the drama will be decided through an open call for designs from students studying designing or those interested in this field. The best 20 designs will be featured in the fashion show during the climax scene of the drama. During the filming, there will be judges who will pick the best design out of the 20 shortlisted entries to win the Grand Prix title and 5 others to win the Excellence award. Designs are to be sent to the TV station before 22 December.
