I also have Saigo no Koi on VHS, but this was before I realized I should record things in SP mode. So I'm sure my version is crappy being in EP mode. Cry I just didn't have the room for all the tapes they would have consumed in SP mode.

I do. I have a standalone DVD recorder, so I can preserve them. But if you can imagine, I have tapes dating back to 1995, so I have plenty of tapes to go through. But I have gotten some of the dramas from BT and trades, so I can skip those series.

Right, right, I vaguely remember you mentioning that... Panasonic?

I've gotta get me one, but it has to accept DVD-RWs... And be less than $200-$300... Sweat

Yes, that's the one. You should look into the Panasonic DMR-ES10. It's one of their newer models, and can handle +-R, -RW, and -RAM. And it was only $199 at Circuit City.

The only downside with VHS-DVD conversion is that it has to be real-time. With all the tapes I have, it'll take months before I archive what I want to archive. But it will give me more subbed dramas (the older ones) to possibly trade.

Hai, honto desu yo. The MSRP is $199.99. You can't beat that for a Panasonic DVD recorder.

Couldn't you use the pass-through capabilities of the camcorder (I assume you're using) to transfer the video in one pass? Crazy

Don't know if I could do that...

Thanks for the reminder on the Panasonic, though: I'm gonna hunt that baby down this weekend. Thumbsup

My only gripe is the limited editting abilities when burning to non -RAM discs: you can't create chapters. It automatically adds a chapter in 5-minute intervals. But beggars can't be choosers, I suppose. It makes it easier to transfer content, but I lose the flexibility by not inputting it into a computer first. Beaten

Hmm. You can't bypass the chapter thingy, huh?

I suppose the chapters can be edited/deleted on the PC with a little effort...

So far, I'm able to create different titles by stopping the recording in between shows. It's creating user-defined chapters that is not possible.

I'm at the Panasonic site right now, looking things over... I'll head over to videohelp.com for some info as well... Smile

Sure, once I get the transfer complete. But keep in mind, they were recorded in EP mode and way back in the late 90s, so the quality will probably be C, C+ at the best. Shake Head I had For You, but when I played it back, it was hardly watchable, so I didn't even bother transferring it. Cry I'm currently archiving some two-hour drama specials, no series has come up yet. But I have many, many more tapes to go. Sweat

I don't know how much you have, but I estimate I have at least 60 tapes to go. At 6 hours a piece....yeah I have a long ways to go.. Sweat Beaten For some reason, I decided that everything was worth archiving onto tape. What was I thinking? Shocked

But I know that I have some dramas that people might enjoy watching subbed. Heck I downloaded one series unsubbed recently. If and when I find the translations, a sharing I come. w00t!

Most of us with VCRs are pretty much in the same boat... we've time-shifted ourselves into oblivion...

Hmm. I noticed that the Panasonic takes DVD-RWs, not +RWs... Head Scratch

The entire +/- is such a glorified mess.

You've got that right. But there are some jewels in there, I hope.

Panasonic at first only used -R/-RW media. the ES10 is the first model that allowed recordings onto +R discs.
