It's a lot smaller than I thought... And I didn't make reservations, but we lucked out by showing up when the place opened at 5:50.
I'll definitely go back.

Cool deal. Yeah that place is quite small and really popular. I, too, once went there and lucked out with out a reservation but yeah it is probably recommended if you have more than 2 ppl in your party. In any event the food is definitely worth a return trip. As you probably noticed on your visit, that place is frequented by a lot of Japanese nationals and Japanese-Americans so that's usually a good sign in my book.
One thing I recommend there is the tsukune (chicken meatball) yakitori. As much as I enjoy Shinsengumi, the tsukune here is the best I've tasted so far in L.A. It is so moist and flavorful which is quite a feat because chicken is much leaner than beef let's say when trying to make meatballs.
Check it out.
