Well, in CPR class they teach you to call the person's name first loudly for several times before initiating the CPR.

Looks like people in Japan need to take some of these classes so they know to do the next step, not just to yell their names and hope the victim wakes up! Beat You

That's soo true. Though I think it's acceptable because if one of your loved ones collapsed like that, you'd be shocked as well, wouldn't you? And then you'd call out their names or hit them or do anything to them just to wake them up, wouldn't you? It's one of human's natures, that's all.

The two first situations are obvious. I'm actually surprised they can say the entire word because Japanese Itai is two syllables, unlike English Ouch or Spanish Ay which are one.

That totally depends on the language you use. For a japanese "itai" is actually 3 syllables (I - TA - I), if you closely observe the way you say "ouch" you could say it would actually be made up of "A - U - TSHH" but generally because of the way english language works, we see "ouch" as "OU" + "CH".

To compare the length of 2 words from different languages, you should use a system that can constantly break up the words into 'parts' in every language. As far as I know there isn't such a system, so it makes it hard to compare words. For example, in english you don't count vowels as "extra time". Like

"Strike" has only one syllable even though your mouth produces 6 different sounds in it:
S - T - R - AH - EE - K

But the word 'I' for example also has 1 syllable but is significantly 'easier' to say;

AH - EE

Ok Now i'm expecting some people to say "what the hell are you talking about, you don't say I as [Ah-EE], it is just 'I' ". But just because you write it with only 1 letter, doesn't mean you only SAY one letter (perfect example: japanese have words made up of many syllables, written in just 1 character).
So bottomline is that the english writing system wouldn't accurately represent the real "length" of a word, or it's complexicity. I also don't think "itai" takes more time to say than "ouch", but obviously "ay" would be the shortest.

It seems like whenever a character in a drama runs across the street, usually because they are in some distress or something, you'll hear the squealing of tires as a driver hits the brakes, followed by his yelling "baka yaro, do you want to die?"

Deosn't anyone ever care to ask if the person in the street is ok? Weird!

That's actually realistic. I've never seen the driver in that situation in real life get out of the car and ask, "Are you OK or just jaywalking." Usually the response is "#@$@#$#@ idiot"

D'oh!

Well, ok. I guess it's different depending on where you are. I don't think I would expect that. Maybe "Watch out!", or "Danger!" or "Be careful!".

Time to revive this thread: What about the "attempted suicide" cliche? I was reminded of this while watching episode 1 of Densha Otoko where he' s standing on top of the building thinking about jumping off. Yeah right, if he jumps, we got no drama! The list of drama's where someone didn't try to kill themselves would be very short. The only 2 I can think of are Hotman and Orange Days.

An ill or disapproving loved one that causes complications in the relationship betweem the two main characters....don't know if anyone else has already said that but I've seen this situation in so many dramas.

Its actually pretty cool hehe .

The Yellow hero likes curry.
Sorry, just had to add something so i can just say this thread is pretty amusing.
Um, what can I think of that hasn't been mentioned... The girl/woman breaking her heels. & for more sympathetic effect, it will be in the rain.
The illness thing is so common that me & my friends would refer to various doramas by referning to them as "you know, the ah-my heart show", "the ah-my eyes show", "the ah-I dropped a video and am obssesed with a boxer show" etc.

Well, Hitomi Kuroki did jump off on Ai suru tame ni Ai-saretai, (Although it was an act of desperation at being chased rather than a suicide attempt),... and we still got plenty of her.

Another one is where everyone is sitting around a table eating or drinking, someone says something shocking/surprising and somebody spits out whatever they're drinking all over everybody else. I was sitting next to my best friend when his wife told him she was pregnant and he didn't spit out his food. He almost choked to death, but that's another story!

dont know if this was posted before but here goes Smile

in a highschool:
guy student has a big crush on very pretty teacher.
very pretty teacher is very nice to guy student.

one day, guy student is walking/sitting around somewhere and sees very pretty teacher pass by. he tails her to a club and finds out that teacher is working as a *gasp* HOSTESS! for the money.

happened in:
gokusen
mukodono

It seems that Japanese people can't sweat, even if they're running for kilometres (remember the Special Gokusen... even Kuma could make it!).

I especially like how they always manage to meet each other everywhere in Japan. ^^;;
