It's still very common to use -ko.
Nice variants such as Sakurako are very popular.

Funny you should mention that, I know Japanese girls named "Yuko" and "Tomoko" and they both use the same kanji for their name -�F�q Crazy

One interesting thing about names in Japan, is that even Japanese makes lots of mistakes when they try to guess someones names, just because of the huge variety of possible readings for the kanji. As someone mentioned above, it's the parents that decides what kanji or not to use for the names.

My favourite name is Sanae.
