MONTESANO, Wash. (AP) - An Elma man was killed by accidentally urinating on a downed power line after a one-car crash near Montesano.

Grays Harbor County sheriff's Deputy Dave Pimentel said Monday that 50-year-old Roy Messenger was not seriously hurt after he collided with a power pole Friday night and called a relative to pull his car out of the ditch.

When family members arrived they found Messenger electrocuted. Pimentel says Messenger apparently urinated into a roadside ditch but didn't see the live wire.

Pimentel says there will be an autopsy but burn marks indicated the way the electricity traveled through the body.

I think we can make a pretty good guess on that.

Just suspend the kids from school, I say. It's only tricky for the Mass General Court, those idiots still haven't figured out that bullying is bad. Shake Head

If the school doesn't act, maybe it's time for a good old fashioned A-kicking.

Swiss vote down lawyers for animals

By Rachael Brown and wires

Switzerland has voted against assigning lawyers to defend animals in court cases.

The Swiss Animal Protection Group says unlike humans, animals have no rights and cannot prosecute people who cause them harm.

The group initiated a Swiss referendum on whether a law in the Zurich region - which requires lawyers be named for animals during court cases - be extended to the rest of the country.

But 70 per cent of voters have defeated the idea.

Switzerland already has comprehensive animal rights laws. People cannot flush a live goldfish down the toilet: it must be knocked out, killed and then its body disposed of.

Household pets like birds and hamsters cannot be left alone in cages and even sheep and goats must at least be able to see their fellows.

The lawyers-for-animals poll is the latest example of Switzerland's "direct democracy" in which any citizen who collects 100,000 signatures from eligible voters can force a nationwide referendum on their chosen cause.

The Swiss must have the luxury to consider these issues. Most other nations are dealing with more pressing issues concerning the livelihood of their citizenry....jobs, housing, putting food on the table, and health care. I guess all the money they've made off of hosting secretive bank accounts worth billions of dollars gives them a latitude other nations cannot begin to fathom.

Husbanding Nazi gold raped from victims of WWII gave them a good head start.

Switzerland is a beautiful country but when it comes to the world of finance....Money talks and bullsh*t walks.

A British soldier left blind by a grenade in Iraq has told how his life has been transformed by ground-breaking technology that enables him to "see" with his tongue.

Lance Corporal Craig Lundberg, 24, can read words, make out shapes and walk without assistance, thanks to a device developed in the United States which could revolutionise life for other blind people.

Lundberg, from Liverpool in north-west England, completely lost his sight after being struck by a rocket-propelled grenade while serving in Basra in 2007.

Faced with a life of relying on a guide dog, he was chosen by the Ministry of Defence as the first person in Britain to trial the BrainPort device.

It converts images into electrical pulses which are sent to the tongue, where they cause a tingling sensation.

The different strength of the tingles can be interpreted so the user can mentally visualise their surroundings and navigate around objects.

The device consists of a tiny video camera attached to a pair of sunglasses which are linked to a plastic "lollipop" which the user places on their tongue to read the pulses.

The image is created by presenting white pixels from the camera as strong stimulation, black pixels as no stimulation, and grey levels as medium levels of stimulation, although interpreting the images takes intensive training.

Lundberg and British military surgeons have visited the US for training in how to use the device, which is being developed by a team led by Gale Pollock, a former major general in the US army.

It is hoped that with further refinement, the BrainPort could be used for other blind British military personnel.
