Yeah, he's always been in the co-star/character actor role... His breakout role hasn't come to him yet, I guess.
But he's better than most, particularly those singers and pretty boys turned "actors."
I first took notice of his versatility from MentoreG. The one with Masami and Juri-chan. And yes, he's much better than most. I wonder is KimuTaku one of the JE product? Never liked him, but after watching him in Engine, I have to admit, the guy has got incredible charisma. Something that Eita is kinda lacking. Takuya's acting himself most of the time, but the difference is, he's actually very expressive and charismatic and that makes him far more interesting than the DV guy.

Well, giving him an award is the "proof" to many that he is on the same level as real actors like Juri-chan... Which is why I find those awards pretty much laughable...
I didn't care about any award he won until I read your post
To be fair, Juri-chan should get 10 awards for every 1 award that he won
They could say that, but I'd say the bias comes from her ability to perform.
I feel it's more than emotional levels. It's conveying what the character is feeling. That's what separates being tearful from actually crying. With Ruka, the pain Juri-chan expressed was practically palpable. You could feel her hurt and understand her pain. Sousuke's scene is still up in the air why he was crying even with an explanation. Now part of that was the writing, but tears dripping down a blank face doesn't give us much to interpret with. Michiru.......still don't give a damn.
^ He nailed it. Although I don't separate my terms for 'crying' and 'being tearful'. Just a different POV I guess. For me any form of crying is still crying, it's just the way it's delivered in a scene that makes a difference. I can easily cry to the point of sobbing after 5 minutes of watching anything that involves the death of someone close. I could really cry in front of people if I wanted to and people would be convinced that I'm sad for real. But that's all there is to it, 'sad'.
Same with Ryo, it was just all out crying. 'Sad' was the only emotion coming out from him. Like Kijinnmaru said, the 'why' is up in the air. Someone without a good grasp of the feelings of the character, along with lack of acting skills will always do that as a resort to move people, mostly because the director and script said so.
He was unable to improve upon or add to what he had been commanded to do so he did just that. His emotions seemed one-dimensional, there are no layers or depth to it. Script can only explain so much, and he couldn't possibly rely on the director to tell him how to act out a scene in details, the rests of what make a character comes to life (which is a lot) are up to his own interpretation and needless to say, I think Ryo's interpretation and understanding as an actor is very basic and mediocre at best.
With Juri-chan however, it's not just about sorrow anymore (I'm referring to episode 4 and 10). It's not just the face, we can see her WHOLE body responded to the emotions inside her, and what makes it even more amazing, her crying scenes were nowhere near as tearful as Sousuke, but the way she delivered it makes her whole situation 10 times more painful than Sousuke. Now THAT takes skills.
She also didn't overact like many actors/actresses -who tried the same- have suffered. The way she delivered the scenes was *just right*, it's just how Ruka the character would do and react, there was no wasted espression, wasted movements or gestures. Every single detail that Juri-chan put into, contributes to present the character as real as humanly possible. She truly understands Ruka inside and out.
There's no amount of rehearsing and instructions can teach you that, it's in your blood and instinct which is why Juri-chan is a natural genius. Her deep understanding of her character, excellent interpretation and performing skills prove that she's really on another different league compared to the others, and to put her as equal to Ryo in terms of acting is a joke and an insult to the arts of acting in general.

Yeah, Kimutaku is a JE product... Or by-product, if you will.

I didn't think so... He seems to always play those "lovable rogue" types... Yawn.

Actually, Juri-chan should get ten awards and he should get NONE.

Excellent... She IS on another level.
I read that she got so into the Ruka character that it affected her... Not sure about the validity of that, but that's what I read.
