Charts: BoA, NEWS, and more Jero
Wed, March 5, 2008 (1:05pm EST)
BoA topped the charts this week with her new album "THE FACE," selling more than 110,000 copies. With this, she has now achieved #1 with all 6 of her original albums in Japan. This puts her in second place for the record of "most consecutive #1 original albums starting with the debut album." She currently trails Ayumi Hamasaki (8), but she has separated herself from The Checkers, Hikaru Genji, and KinKi Kids (all at 5).
A couple of foreign releases made the top 10 - Celine Dion's "Complete Best" was #3 and Janet Jackson's "Discipline" was #9. Meanwhile, Janet's brother Michael remained in the top 10 right behind her with his "Thriller 25."
On the other side of the charts, NEWS' 8th single "Taiyou no Namida" had 230,000 in sales. Similar to BoA's achievement, they are now in second place for the record of "most consecutive #1 singles starting with the debut single" (tied with Hikaru Genji), though they are far behind the current record of 26 set by KinKi Kids.
EXILE and YUI also sold well, taking #2 and #3 on the charts, respectively. Also in the top 10 were idol groups C-ute (#6) and AKB48 (#10), while DREAMS COME TRUE's "One Piece" tie-in fell between them at #8.
One of the bigger stories is still Jero, the black enka singer from Pittsburgh who debuted the previous week. His "Umiyuki" fell only one spot to #5, though it actually rose about 1,000 in sales. Not counting artists that originally were in a group or who had a comeback, enka's last debut single to spend two consecutive weeks in the top 5 was the re-re-release of Akio Kayama's "Hisame" in the early '80s. However, Jero is the only one in history to have his initial single make the top 5 in its first two weeks.

Mika Nakashima graces cover of Rolling Stone
Thu, March 6, 2008 (5:54pm EST)
Singer Mika Nakashima has been chosen as the first Japanese person to be on the cover of Rolling Stone Japan.
The American-based Rolling Stone launched the Japanese version of its magazine last March. Past issues have featured overseas artists on the cover, but Nakashima will break tradition with the April issue (on sale March 10), which will also include a 4-page feature on her. There is further talk that Nakashima may appear on the cover of the U.S. edition in the future.
The magazine's editor selected her for the cover because he wanted a female artist whose impact extended beyond just music. Nakashima, who is involved in areas such as fashion and acting, was a natural choice.

From Mainichi Shimbun:
The Nakamura-Takeuchi split: she gets the kid, alimony and a new career, he gets hosed
It's been one of the nastiest mutual consent divorces in Japanese entertainment history, but kabuki star Shido Nakamura and Yuko Takeuchi have finally untied the knot, with the actress emerging as the complete victor, according to Shukan Shincho (3/13).
About 15 months passed since Takeuchi stormed out on Nakamura after he was caught cheating -- repeatedly -- before they finally sealed their divorce on the auspicious date of Feb. 29.
And not only did Takeuchi get nearly everything she wanted out of Nakamura with the split, the divorce has also opened new paths for her career to expand from the squeaky clean image she has become known for.
Few expected Nakamura and Takeuchi to last when they married in June 2005, with the actress then carrying what would become the couple's son. It was still a shock just a few months later when Nakamura was pulled over by the cops for driving drunk, and the tabloids learned his ex-girlfriend Aya Okamoto was in the car with him while his heavily pregnant wife was still at home. The final straw came for Takeuchi shortly afterward when Nakamura was exposed having secret trysts with celebrity Saki Takaoka and she walked out on him in October 2006, taking their young son with her.
"It was their son who posed the biggest stumbling block in making a clean break," an entertainment beat reporter tells Shukan Shincho. "Shido always wanted his son to follow in his footsteps and become a kabuki actor, but when he found it would be almost impossible to gain custody, decided to turn his attention toward getting visitation rights (which aren't always handed to parents in Japanese divorces). Takeuchi's advisors initially even refused to consider allow him the right to see his son. Fighting over that is what dragged the divorce negotiations out so long."
Eventually, Takeuchi's side gave some ground, but not much.
"In exchange for permitting Shido to have periodic meetings with his son, he had to agree to pay alimony, but I don't know what the amount is," the reporter says. "He won't have to pay her anything in compensation or damages, though."

Yoshiki, Akikawa team up for drama theme song
Rock star Yoshiki and popular tenor Masafumi Akikawa have formed an unlikely combination to create the theme song for a two-part television drama set to air next week.
The drama is NTV's "Tokyo Daikushu," whose cast is led by Maki Horikita and Tatsuya Fujiwara. The drama, which airs on March 17-18, reportedly had a budget of 100 million yen.
The theme song is a currently untitled ballad written and composed by Yoshiki and sung by Akikawa. The two actually never met, as Yoshiki created the song while in Los Angeles. It was brought back to Japan, and Akikawa completed the recording in Tokyo on Monday.

"Snakes and Earrings" cast includes Oguri, Fujiwara, and more
Tue, March 11, 2008 (5:16am EDT)
Yukio Ninagawa's "Hebi ni Piasu" (also known as "Snakes and Earrings") finished filming in December, but certain cast details quietly slipped under the radar until recently.
While it was widely announced that Yuriko Yoshitaka was starring alongside Kengo Kora and ARATA, the movie's guest cast was not publicized. Media outlets are now reporting that Kamejiro Ichikawa, Shun Oguri, Toshiaki Karasawa, and Tatsuya Fujiwara are among the faces that appear in the film.
"Hebi ni Piasu" is based on Hitomi Kanehara's Akutagawa Prize-winning novel that was published in 2003. The story follows a teenager named Lui (Yoshitaka) who starts experimenting with piercings and other body modifications, but it leads her life into a downward spiral. The novel encompasses several mature themes, including alcoholism, sadomasochism, and violence.
Several big names are appearing in minor roles. Kamejiro Ichikawa plays a detective, while Rakkyo Ide plays the manager at Lui's part-time job. Shun Oguri and Tatsuya Fujiwara, who have both previously starred in Ninagawa's stage plays, appear as members of a gang. Other cast members include Toshiaki Karasawa (as a cop), Yu Abiru (as Lui's friend), and Sonim (as Lui's co-worker).

That's ridiculous: how can you give awards with the season not over yet?
That's like giving out Olympic gold medals before a race has started...

Karina's performance was amazing, imho, she deserves it. My 2nd choice would be Kanjiya Shihori.
I was snoring half-way through the 1st episode Shikaotoko Aoniyoshi - maybe I missed something. More talking deers roaming temples and grasslands. Now I'm curious what made it stand out.
heh, Yagi Yuki should have at least gotten some special award. that kid is amazing.

Wed, March 12, 2008 (5:13pm EDT)
Josei Seven reports in its latest issue that actress Kyoko Koizumi and KAT-TUN member Kazuya Kamenashi are no longer dating. Late last month, Koizumi was at a drinking party, and she reportedly stated that they have already broken up. It is not clear when the breakup happened.
The two first made headlines as a rumored couple in April 2006. Due to Kamenashi's status as a young Johnny's star and the 20-year age difference between the two celebrities, the news attracted a lot of attention. However, neither of their agencies have ever confirmed the relationship.
