in the end Tsuneo ran.. from what? In the end he was just shallow? Maybe he dreaded having to carry Jozee on his back coz she didn't want a wheelchair?

I think it's meant to play with the viewer's expectation that, in movies, everything works out really well in the end.
The old lady said nothing good would come of it, and Josee herself said so to her childhood friend. Also, Josee already expected that outcome when Tsuneo was unable to take her to meet his family.
Considering the movie starts with him sadly recalling his past with Josee, I think it's saying that even if there's love and good character, the burden may be too much in the end.
To me, "Josee, the tiger and the fish" is funny in that I don't like Juri's character at all, but it's still one of the better movies she's in. To me it looks like she's there just because she's gorgeous and was probably pretty cheap back then.
Maybe it's the opposite of "Killer Virgin Road", in which the character suits her really well (maybe custom made for her?), but the movie itself isn't that good.
Of course then I'll have to say I think "Swing Girls" and "Turtles swim faster than expected" were perfect in that both the movie was good and Juri's characters fit her perfectly.

with Josee.. it was already foreshadowed that things weren't going to end well.. it's just not clear for me what Tsuneo meant when he said he ran. by burden, are you talking about compromises with living/taking care of someone with Josee's condition?
on 2nd look, it seems that he was realizing he didn't like her as much as he thought he did when they went on the road trip. so i don't get why he was so broken up at the end.. maybe it was a case of pity/bleeding heart all along. in the confrontation between Kanae n Josee.. Kanae brings up the point saying "i envy you the weapon you have".
ah whatever.. i don't usually go for happy endings anyhow. although it's probably for the best that things ended up the way they did. drives me nuts when people stay in bad/dishonest relationships

In the original he said he ran away, using the word for 'to flee, to escape'. I think he meant he ran away of the burden of being with Josee.
Being with a handicapped person isn't that great of a burden, I guess. But I think he really felt like no one else would be with her. She had no family or friends, too. I think that was the bigger problem. He felt a huge obligation towards her, and that's what he ran away from.
I think he cried at the end because he did love Josee, but still couldn't take responsibility for her, and Kanae reminded him of his cowardly choice.
What do you think about the meaning behind the tiger and the fish? They could have them go to a working aquarium, but they didn't. Why?

i've been trying to figure that out since i first saw it. Josee was quite desperate in that scene.
i just realized that the 'fish' in the title of the movie is actually referring to fish in the plural sense.. til now i thought it was referring to that one fish/eel thing at the end.
the tiger and the fish.. without overthinking it, i figure they symbolize Josee's life before & after Tsuneo. before, she was like a caged tiger.. feisty and yet trapped in her situation. maybe the reason for the closed aquarium was because those fish would be, in a sense, caged as well.
there was something about the way the tiger and the fish both looked right at Josee.. made me feel that there was some sense of identification

I didn't think of that at all, but I think you nailed it!

LOL... Anyone who believes that, stand on their head.
Do you mind if I translate it instead?
(Which was a bit of a challenge, so I had to.)

2013
Happy New Year.
This 2013, not yet used to seeing, not yet used to hearing, not yet used to saying,
will become recognizable to us naturally, won't it?
I hope you'll have as much happiness as possible, that what isn't so yet be as few as possible,
and that you'll have an enjoyable year.
I'm dealing with movie filming myself, a movie that will be released this autumn.
The time between filming and release is really short, so it looks like it'll be autumn before I know it.
While passing the days able to enjoy the seasons this year too, I'll be movitated really well by all of you around me.
And I'd like to, for the roles I'm going to come across some day,
for the sake of the people who'll watch me do them, strive to express them better.
PS Did you have any New Year's dishes?
@They'll let you experience the happiness of being Japanese. _________________

cool.. many thanks for the translation. i sure don't mind if you decide to translate anything related to Juri
I'm afraid Keiko has a claim on all my time, and my interest in Juri is a really weird one: I don't find her attractive, and that puzzles me, because she must be.
Her 2013 message is nice though. People can be attractive in other ways... _________________
