1. Tadaima [Rating: 10/10]
Not long ago I was asked why I love Japanese dramas so much. I answered that it's because they're different from what I'm used to. The American dramas always have complex stories and a lot of sex, everyone ending up in bed together. Latin-American soaps have confusion over parenthood, a lot of shouting and passion. All are predictable and after a while boring. What I failed to say was that I always learned something from Japanese dramas. So, the question is, what did I learn from "Virgin Road"?

I have learned many things from this drama. First of all, I learned what it means to be a father. I always knew from experience that being a father not only meant donating a sperm, but careing. Kissing bruised knees. A father is someone who loves his daughter unconditionally. Someone who stands beside her no matter what. The same goes for a family. A family is a group of people who love each other unconditionally, blood not being an issue.

I also learned that mothers are the strongest people in the world. I have a great love for mine and I always knew that she was strong, but this drama pointed out for me that if I am to become one myself, I have to be strong. Becoming a mother is a solitary journey in a way. You become one in yourself, apart from others. They can help you, but eventually, it is your own path.
Furthermore, I learned about the true meaning of two Japanese phrases. When they come home, they say "tadaima" and the other, who are already there, say "okaerinasai" in return. When translating, they mean "I'm back/home" and "welcome back/home". However, the most basic rule of any translation is that when we just look at the words, the true meaning behind them may disappear. So the difficult part is giving their true meaning back. "Tadaima" "I'm home", "okaerinasai" "welcome home". This drama points out the home aspect of these phrases and that someone actually says it. Having a home where there are people waiting for you to come back, that is what these phrases are truly about. Having people; your family to go back to.
People who want you to come back is a wonderful thing that you really only appreciate if no one can say "okaerinasai" to you anymore, or if no one ever said it to you. If you are not one of these people, then this drama makes you realise just how lucky you really are. For those people, who have no one to hear "Okaerinasai" from, you learn that some day you may unexpectedly find people who will want you to come home. That you will find a home with people who love you. Once I heard a sappy English song in a cartoon that still rings true in my heart and this drama made me think of. It went like "A house full of love is a home". Home is in the heart. It's not and address.

This all being said, what is this drama really about? There is a woman, Kazumi, who becomes pregnant. She's determined to have her child, but is afraid that once her father learns that the father is not around, he will make her abort it. That is not something she wants, so she enlists the help of Kaoru, a man she meets on the plane home, to play the role of the father. It is quite obvious that they will fall for each other. Is it obvious that they can be together? No, it is not. Will they end up together? Only the last episode will tell. In the process they teach us and each other many lessons, grow up a lot and learn some secrets. Through it all, the clock is ticking, the baby is growing in Kazumi. The drama itself keeps you on the edge about who will lead Kazumi down the 'virgin road' in the end.

This may be an old drama, made in 1997, and in somewhat a poor condition. The hairs look funny and the clothes baggy, but what it says is timeless and after a while, you no longer notice the not perfect quality of the picture, but you just want to know how it ends. So ignore that if you may be put off in the beginning, because the drama is well-worth watching.

2. One of the best! (Thanks to thesog) [Rating: 10/10]
Virgin Road! Man they could make these good dramas as early as 1997.

I never seen the beautiful actor Wakui Emi in any drama before. But from seeing this I can tell she's a great actor. Describing how great, is futile and pointless since it will only run short from any true experience of viewing her, live a drama, cause that's how it feels like when you see her, performing would be a weak word.

Needless to say she alone made this drama so delightful to watch. The storyline was strong and despite the start-to-finish was already revealed you were never bothered by it, the story held up almost through every episode. And the theme with Amuro Namie was great too, I grew to like it more and more. I also liked the idea of featuring her in the intro video as well, apperantly not always a fact.

It's not the general lovey-dovey JDrama since it's also a family drama I would guess. As always in these dramas there were a great number of intense scenes of emotions enough to heat up a whole block, but always without feeling dorky in any way cause you believed it and felt for it. This was another beautiful drama and it's highly recommended.

Grading 10 of 10 is the least I can do.

Finally I've come to terms why I generally like JDramas more than anything else, apart from exellent acting with very subtle (but fully working) facial expressions and soft way-winning on the edge of cool dialogs, captivating scripts full of surprise twists and as a rule kickass theme songs along with world-class and always well chosen soundtracks, I like the fact that they always presents decent explanations which works damn well while twirling the story forward. Well that's of course IMO labeled.

3. A long, winding road [Rating: 8/10]
This is a grounded family drama that may hit an emotional chord. The characters that drive this drama are ordinary and flawed, yet, the imperfections of these well-rounded characters humanize this drama, adding a touch of realism especially when society is thrust with issues such as morality and the stigma of unwedded pregnancy.

Takeda Tetsuya gives one of the most excellent performances I've seen yet, immersing himself into the role of an old-fashioned and obstinate father with such ease and sincerity. Takashi Sorimachi also excels, he is so much better here than he will be in Over Time a couple of years later, which I saw him last. Wakui Emi initially seemed passive but as the story progresses, she shows that she can emote really well especially in dramatic scenes.

The plot is not only daring, but is filled with new plot twists in almost every episode that keep it refreshing. Even so, there is something lacking in this drama that doesn't make me want to watch an episode after another. There are parts that are too preachy and the characters tend to go off on an endless, emotional monologues which I don't really appreciate...only when Takeda does it, that it actually works. The drama also has some cheesy scenes that make me roll my eyes, and the ending is a bit too picture perfect.

However, this drama is very touching and satisfying. It makes me respect some of the actors in this drama a whole lot more for sure.

4. The Perfect Love Story [Rating: 9/10]
Okay, I'm a sucker for these types of romances. The girl is pregnant and alone after going through a bad relationship (the end result, anyway) and has to face her family. In comes a dashing young man willing to play the part of her fiance. Of course, her father is absolutely against everything, and the young man must help the girl seek her father's approval. Throughout this process, they fall in love but are constantly bombarded with obstacles.

>>contented sigh<<

The storyline was great and I enjoyed the plot (although it was quite fast-paced and JAM PACKED with drama). What I liked best was the touching scenes between father and daughter, and how the writers portrayed the situation. Everything was so... endearing.

In terms of the cast, I think Wakui Emi has finally won me over. This is the third drama I'm seeing her in and, what's that saying? The third time's the charm. Of course I LUFF Sorimachi Takashi, so I won't waste time drooling over him. The surprise for me was Takeda Tetsuya. For some reason I'd made up my mind that I wasn't going to like him as an actor, although I haven't seen him in much of anything. I thought he was great in this drama. His performance was very touching.

And then of course, the icing on the cake for me was Yo Kimiko, whom I adore and love.

I definitely recommend this drama to all romantics. It's a great one.

5. Very good! [Rating: 10/10]
Very good drama! This is one of the best that I've ever seen. I mean, quite a few people wouldn't agree with me, but I think very highly of this drama. Considering the fact that its pretty old (and the gradual yet constantly rising standard of j-dramas) I can't help acknowledging the well thought out plot and the forever entertaining cast. Some of the more recent dramas that I've seen actually pale in comparison to this one. Why? Because the storyline wasn't overun with complications. It wasn't too sappy and too romantic/dramatic either which is a plus for me; mainly because I hate that kind of stuff ^__^'. Although it wasn't very eventful (fights, people running away from home, etc.) it was still very good. I truley enjoyed the moderate pace of this drama as well as the simple yet complex position in which the main character stood. This drama gave me a break from all of the saddness, jealousy, cheating, etc. that runs rampid in so many other dramas. I could truley relax and watch it. The actors did an extremely good job too. There wasn't a dry patch in the bunch at all ^__^. So, in summary the simplicity of this drama was what made it truely enjoyable. In my opinion it is definately worth watching; especially if you just want something relatively light-hearted to get into.

6. VERY GOOD [Rating: 8/10]
The only downside to my review of this drama is the initial meeting of Wakui and Sorimachi on the plane where she ask him to pretend to be her husband on the airplane and he agrees. Once you get past this 'speed bump' the rest of the drama is a classic on the dynamice of a relationship especially with the pressures of becoming parents very early. Unlike his normal hyper thug characters Sorimachi is pretty calmed down in this and gives a more down to earth performance as the guy who agrees to marry and raise someone else's kid. I think Wakui gives another great job as the expectant mother who goes thru 4 or 5 traumatic events trying to please everyone and not really knowing what she should do. I love Wakui and think she has some of the most expressive eyes I have ever seen on any actress. But the greatest performance in this has to be from Takeda (someone who I thought was the absolute worst choice as the lead in 101 proposals). He gives a masterful performance as the would be doting father who turns bitter when he finds out his angel is an unwed mother, and it gets even worse when he finds out who the real father of the child is. I would highly recommend this drama. It is another one that is a little dark, but it ends on a bright note.

7. Everyone should watch Virgin Road! [Rating: 10/10]
I loved this drama. Wakui and Sorimachi are both great actors, and I loved Takeda as Kazumi's Oto-san.

The scene in the hospital room with Kazumi and her father, with Kaoru in the background (after he brings her back from her mother's grave) was so touching! As were many other parts.

Also, the ending was just perfect. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes love stories, this was really an excellent drama.

This drama didnt get to my attention so much at first. But it turned out to be really good. The storyline is very interesting. Everything is so ironic in this drama. I freaked out when i found out that Jo-san is not even the real father or Kazumi. But that is very relevant to when Kazumi asked Kaoru to be the father of her baby. Yea. this is a must see =)

Not one of the best dramas, but certainly more than watchable. You will be bored at times, but Sorimachi and Takeda give good performances. In fact, Takeda makes this drama as Wakui's father. Cool guy. One bad point, almost to the point of ruining this show for me, was Hosho Mai's character. Very, very annoying. Other than that, give it a try.

One of the few gems among the jdoramas I've watched. Incredibly powerful acting performances by Tetsuya and Sorimachi with a very well-written and well-paced script. This classic of the 90's was one of the first doramas to fall into my hands in 2004. However, I found the opening theme so unbearable and I stopped watching it. Now after having read very good references about it and having overcome my problems with Namie Amuro's song (Lol), I have been able to watch it completely.
First of all, this dorama surprised me, it is one of the 90's shows that represent better the typical pure love stories that were so popular in that time, a future single mother who fall in love with the bad guy, that ends up wanting to be the father of her baby, it's easy. It might seem a boring plot, but from the 1st episode the dorama is so balanced, maintaining the interest in every moment, there aren't too much doramas that can get this.
Further to this, I think one of the secetes of this show is the cast: Emi Wakui (Date ~ Koi to wa Donna Mono Kashira - 2015), Takashi Sorimachi (GTO - 1998) and Tetsuya Takeda (101 Kaime no Puropozu - 1991). About Wakui, I have been reading good comments about her, recommending always this dorama, now that I just watched it I can say, she deservers all of them. Sorimachi proved here his skills as an actor one year before of his great hit GTO, undoubtedly this was a good cover letter. And what to say about Takeda?, this actor is amazing, for me one the best, he alone can change a dorama like this to a family one in a second, in spite of his height, his presence in the show is quite huge.

I enjoyed this drama very much. all the characters are very likable and i especially love the father, he is such a good father...Sorimachi is damn sexy !!!!! It started a bit draggy but after the first episode, I can't wait to see how they will fall in love..ohh and sorimachi is sooo handsome that I wanted to see more of him.. hehehe
The drama emphasizes the role of a parent to a child and the child to the parent. The parnet/parents is to always guide and support their children. Even though their children have their own lives, parents will continue to meddle in their child's affairs because a parent will never stopped loving his child. The drama is also about self discovery. Both kazumi and Kaoru had problems with their identity. Kaoru, having grown up in an orpanage and abandoned by his parents, his heart became cold and distant from human compassion. when he felt the kindness of kazumi and his family, he doubts if he is deserving of that kindness. he puts on an act to runaway from confronting and expressing his true feelings to kazumi, his mother and kiri. ever since she was little and her mother died, Kazumi obeyed his father and always pleased him. She was afraid to live an ordinary life and so decided to go to america to find the life she wanted to lead.

Wakui Emi (as soon as she cuts that dreadful "ramen hair" she sports at the beginning of the series ^_-) goes back to being the same, absolutely adorable actress who had previously graced the audience in "Pure", and she delivers a solid performance throughout the entire dorama. Talking about great performances, Takeda Testsuya's would deserve a standing ovation, period. The problems lie with Sorimachi (who seems a bit out of place here, imho), with Hosho Mai (I liked her a lot in "Shomuni", but here she's just irritating, sorry), and most of all with the scriptwriting, which has its moments but also many faults - particularly the last two episodes which are plainly silly. Too bad, it could've been much better than this...:/

I was really surprised by his dorama, from the review it seemed pretty weak but instead it was really awesome.
The male leads are just awesome: Sakurai(Takeda Tetsuya) and Kaoru(Sorimachi Takachi) were really good, i loved in the begining when Kaoru was trying to convince Sakurai to let him marry Kazumi(Wakui Emi).
Kazumi was such a boring character and her surprise expressions all seemed so fake. ItLs the first time i saw Wakui Emi so i donLt know if sheLs like this in every dorama.
The last 3 episodes draged a lot, but that didnLt ruin the first 8 episodes.
Anyway another great dorama with Takashi "The Great" Sorimachi with a stellar perfromance by Takeda Tetsuya.

One of the 1st jdoramas that I watched. The memory of it is a little blurred. It was so long ago, but I remember enjoying it and my sister going gaga over Sorimachi. He has grown in skills quite a bit since this role I have to say.

I always wondered if I had done the same thing to help a woman like Sorimachi did. Of course, he had his own motives, but still, it's a big risk and probably not easy to do.

Another one of my favourite jdoramas ever! Incredibly powerful acting performances by Tetsuya and Sorimachi in a very well-written and well-paced romance. Music was very appropriate but I think what stands out the most is the quality of the acting - among the best I've seen in jdorama for some scenes - those were particularly gripping and powerful moments - making this jdorama truly outstanding!

I've never expected how good this dorama would turn out to be until I've watched the first episode. It's really, really good! I got hooked to it, wanting to know what would happen between Kazumi and Kaoru next. It dragged towards the end, but it's still a good watch. I think this is one of the better dramas around. Even though it is rather old, I think Sorimachi looks best in this one. And I like the storyline about how the 2 of them fall in love. At the last part when the female lead thought that Sorimachi had died, She felt so upset but yet did not cry, I felt very sad deep inside me as well. Thank goodness for the great ending eventually.

The ups and downs of a want to be single mother who falls for a stand in fiance made this one so compelling to watch. It was on the verge of being a weekly tragedy but each problem leads to maturing of the daughter. I'll look for more dramas with Wakui Emi as she does an excelent job of expressing the emotions of her character. I enjoyed this one.

another adaptation fm 'a walk in the clouds' but i must say, tho Sorimachi is not as goodlooking as Keanu, he sure is a charming kinda a guy..and Emi Wakui is so..pure and sweet in his portrayal..another love story that musnt be missed!

I liked this drama, but it moved to slowly for me, I'm such a romantic, and this...wasn't romantic. It was still good though, the actors did a good job. And I'm a Namie Amuro fan, so more points for the opening theme song!

Amazing the whole way! It was an emotional roller coaster til the end! Sorimachi was good but Wakui Emi was the glue to this show. Her performance was beyond breath taking. Truly one of the best actress in this day in age.

I was really surprised with this one - I had no expectations whatsoever when I started watching it, but already after one episode I was completely hooked. Great storyline, and great acting, especially by Takashi Sorimachi.

Till now, I can't believe how I watched this. Draggy till the end, and Amuro Namie's song made me sleep, too long for an opening theme and her being in the opening was just too much of a career-boost act. don't bother.

Love the guy who acts as the dad. This was very much the japanese version of what was taht keanu reeves movie? dancing in the clouds? In anycase i loved it. Nice happy ending no death for once. I would reccomend it.

I was really liking this dorama until about halfway through. It really went off the rails in the last two episodes or so -- too many coincidences, etc. Too bad because it started well and had a good cast.

Excellent! There was much thought put into the camera work for this one. Except for one or two instances the script is superb. My only complaint is the slight overuse of monologues where dialogues would be better suited. The relationship between the two main characters is very good, heart wrenching at times. The somber undertones of growth and giving up that which you love strikes home in the last few episodes. Definately a top 10.

Liked the way that Kaoru did to make Kazumi's father trust him.. liked the chemistry between Kaoru & Kazumi especially in the last two episodes...
loved this scene "Otoshita Contact ha hora, jibunde hiroundayo!!" "Sono Maeni, otoshimasenn...mou, otosanaiyomo contact... datte unmeino deai ha ichidodakedamon..ano ichido dake"... great cast from Sorimachi Takasi, Wakui Emi and Takeda Tatsuya... Conragulations

this dorama has a great storyline. i like the fact that it emphasizes women empowerment. wakui was great as a soon-to-be-mom dealing with family, love and career issues. i also love the unpredictable ending. a must-see for any female dorama lover!

Excellent romance comedy. It shows love and well-wished thoughts of family and lover. The performance of Takashi Sorimachi, Emi Wakui, and Tetsuya Takeda were outstanding. It made me cry many times, yet, it made me laugh. It was a great drama.

Generally good. I think too many conflicts were solved by Sorimachi grinning and everyone forgetting they were angry with one another, but still interesting. I only wish the ending had been less predictable.

My second drama. Since I didnot know what to watch after GTO, I decided to go through actor Sorimachi filmography and chose Virgin Road. VR confirmed my newly born love for Japanese Dramas

Wow, this one's number 1 in my book! Fantastic cast, very touching story, and tons of surprises and twists! Emi is very cute, and Takashi is cool as always. Highly recommended!

a bit boring at the beginning, but as it goes through, the story is getting better, and a very good ending, especially the "speech" in the hospital at the last episode.

One of my first few dorama that i watched. Very touching and warm show. After watching this show i love Jap dorama and also Sorimachi as well.

Perhaps not the best drama in the world, but it combines good cast chemistry with decent acting and lots of heartache up to the final episode.

One of my favorites. Great acting, great plot. How dare the writers scare me at the end like that! Anyways, I'd say it's a must see!
