Synopsis
This drama is based on the book Flowers for Algernon written in 1966 by Daniel Keyes. Written some 30 years ago, this world-renowned masterpiece has been translated into several languages and has been read by those of all generations.

An adult, Haru Fujishima only possesses the mental capacity of a child. Others have laughed at him since birth. But because of his good-natured personality, Haru doesn't let his disability get in the way.

Erina Toya is a teacher that works at a night school for the mentally disabled. Erina really enjoys her work, and her students are quite attached to her.

One day, one of Erina's friends who works at a research institute at a college tells her that they are searching for a mentally disabled person to test an operation that may cure the disability. Since Haru is like a younger brother to Erina, she tells him that he should let them perform the surgery on him. Waiting for Haru during the preliminary tests though was something totally unexpected; he will be competing against a lab rat by the name of Algernon. Haru feels a kind of closeness to Algernon, who has already gone surgery to enhance his brainpower.

Awaiting Haru after his surgery is a whole new world. In just a short period of time, Haru's I.Q. goes from 68 to 100, then 150. Naturally the now genius Haru begins to experience a self-awakening and even falls in love for the first time. The object of his affection is none other than Erina, who has helped him develop his genius. Haru's emotional development though isn't as rapid as his mental development.

Though Erina is living with her boyfriend, she too starts feeling herself emotionally crossing the teacher-student boundary, and falls for Haru.

Suddenly one day, in the middle of all the changes that Haru has been going through, he realizes that Algernon's intelligence is slipping. Was the surgery a failure? Will Haru return to his original mental capacity?

Later, Haru begins to feel his own intelligence declining, so he does everything that he can to try to stop it; but this is to no avail. Seeing this all happen right before her very eyes, this makes Erina feel like this is her fault.

What will happen to the love that has blossomed between Haru and Erina? Will they be able to find what is really important to them?

1. Slow but good [Rating: 8/10]
The tempo is very slow, but consistently good. It's touching, esp towards the end. Too bad that I've not read the novel, so cannot give a review of how good (or bad) the conversion is... The casts did a superb job. You can see (and feel) the transition of Haru, from mentality slow to a genius... and back... recomend this drama to those who loves slow and serious dramas...

I read the novel back in high school and loved it. I saw most of the series when I went to Japan (saw up to 6 I believe) but still loved it. I loved Santa Maria's portrayal as Haru and did a good job. I just didn't like how the teacher cried every episode.

Great dorama. All the actors are doing their best. It's sad but it deals whit a topic quite unusual so it's pretty interesting. yet, I think that as usual Kanno Miho is sometimes overacting, she cries all the time etc... I think that if she continues like this it will be hard for her to find new roles more akarui. (but I like her...) I also fund strange the way haru gets intelligent so quick and return to a baka very fast too. You know, it's not because you're IQ is high that you can suddendly read in all the languages of the world and be a scientist in two weeks! It's just impossible. But the dorama is great and its ending too ( wich is not so usual in jdorama )

This drama works because of Yusuke Santamaria, I don't think there are many other japanese actors out there that could pull this off but he did it flawlessly. Unfortunately Kanno Miho performance is way to melodramatic (I wonder if it was the directors choice or her own to cry every damn episode), this caused the drama to go from great to just good.

I still have to recommend this, one of those rare dramas that will make you think while being emotionally compelling at the same time.

Adapted from a book, this script about a retarded man who regains full brain capacity is very suited for a J-drama series. It's a touching story & it's funny & sad at the same time with pretty good acting from the leads. There are quite a few hows & whys, since we're not getting much scientifical explanations. Just don't demand logical answers & you will most likely find this drama enjoyable.

I've always thought of Yusuke Santamaria as a comedian first, but this is probably the best place to see him as a dramatic actor. His performance is poignantly charming. The drama's weak spot, IMO, was the rather bland character that Kanno Miho plays... Ishida Ayumi as the torn, neglectful mother of Haru is an interesting side story that wasn't even part of the book, but it adds so much more in the drama.

I quite enjoyed the book so I decided to check out how the drama is. I have to say, I'm really impressed. Some aspects of the story were cut out and changed but I'm mostly alright with it. Mostly sad with the ending...but still kinda happy. >.> Yusuke Santamaria played Haru/Charlie insanely well.

Just like the book, it's a very emotional story but so insanely good.

I've seen most of the series but not all of it. It was one of my favorite novels I read in high school and this drama is faithful to the original novel in it's own right. I loved how Yusuke Santa Maria conveyed Haru as being funny, heart warming, and emotional. My only problem was the teaching crying every episode.

Wow, this is one moving dorama! Great Script indeed. I haven't seen one this good for a while now. Yusuke Santamaria demonstrated that he is one skillful actor. His interpretation of the character is just amazing! Kanno Miho performance is also powerful. Don't miss this one.

Enjoyed this drama! Santamaria is a good dramatic actor. This plot is the same as "Charley" starring Cliff Robertson in the 70s. What happened to Tomoko's acting career? She was a good child actress in Kita no Kuni!

Very good, it's excellent. I love the story. It's a very good adaptation of "Flower for Algernon" by D. Keyes in J-drama. The ending is very moving ;_;

An inspirational tale about a man with a low IQ who gets surgery to become smarter. Yuusuke Santa Maria was just great in this drama.

You know how, sometimes after watching a few minutes of a drama, it almost felt like I have watched a whole episode. That's how I felt when watching this drama. There were moments/passages where time almost seemed to stand still. This has only happened once before for me when watching jdoramas, as far as I can remember. Basically, from episode 6 on, this series floored me. I did not shed any tears though...
