1. Rare story from Antagonist point-of-view [Rating: 10/10]
Poirot - A character of Agatha Christie once said that once you killed, you would killed again...

Most story telling would take protagonists as their main characters. From Japanese itself, the most notable story telling was Death Note. It was said as the first manga with antagonist as main character.

The similar characteristic went to Byakuyakou where the main characters were antagonist and the story was also about crimes. However, for some points, Byakuyakou stood more because it carried more issues like prostitution, threatening matters, and dark secrets which actually close to our daily lives.

Whether you gave your sympathy to the characters or not, for me, myself, this story had clear question toward our humanity, beliefs, and ethics.

The next paragraph of my review contains SPOILER but after that, no more spoiler.

The story had taken two young children, around age 11, meeting in library. They had fallen in love but their meeting was the beginning of their disastrous lfe. The girl was sold by her mother for sex and the client was the father of the boy. But rather than ended to hate one each other, they helped one each other. As an accidental action, the boy stabbed his father and caused him dead. The girl, in return, was the one who covered and made her own mother as the suspect. Later, she killed her too. To cover it, the girl said goodbye. But later, after years, they met again to commit more crimes.

The story was surely not for young viewers. There were sensitive issues including sex which made this drama could be watched by adults. More than it, the story need our wise thought and understanding. For some people, the story might be lame and annoying especially because it had so many repeating scenes but I think it was enough reasonable. This was a detective story. As the point of views were given from both criminals and detectives, you can see the difference and similarity of their thoughts.

Byakuyakou was a j-dorama that was filled in great details from plotting, characterizations, continuity, great music scores, including best in photography and sounds. I rarely see a drama with such of passion to photography and sounds. The musics had suited the ambiance of the story's mood and it really moved your heart.

For me, the only thing that might annoying was because the characters were mostly crying which made me unable to cry. But, it was still touching my heart. If I was in such situation, I might cried too. But I must gave all actors and actress thumbs up since all of them brilliantly played well.

As conclusion from me, if you like a serious drama, if you like a tense story, psychology, no ordinary story, beautiful scenes and poems, great dialogues, music scores, and strong acting, Byakuyakou is a must to see.

2. I hate this drama... but it was brilliant [Rating: 9/10]
This drama is a love story between two children forced to commit murders in order to protect each other. The drama follows the events that take place afterwards in their lives, each event more complicated, each event more terrible, for one simple goal: to walk together beneath the sun once more.

This is the darkest drama I have ever seen. There isnft a single ray of light in it and while watching I felt like I was drowning in the darkness. I wanted to stop watching, but I couldnft. I didnft like this show.

But it is brilliant.

Why are people bad? How do they become bad? Can you blame children for their actions? When do they become adults? This drama really makes you reevaluate rather dangerous morals. I felt like I was on a rollercoaster of emotions while watching. They were only childrenc and this must happen in life every dayc. This is the second drama (Ichi Ritoru no Namida being the first) that has ever hit me emotionally and mentally this hard.

Every single actor/actress in this drama was brilliant, especially Yamada and Ayase. Never have I felt for, nor hated, two characters more.

This drama was sickening to watch at times and I felt dirty throughout most of it. I will never ever watch it again.

I donft recommend this drama at all. And yet I do.

3. I have difficulties getting to the end of this [Rating: 5/10]
This drama is soooooo heavy, the whole tone is sooooo sad and heavy, it is really difficult to get to the end. Plus I think the story is crazy. What r the two characters thinking about? They have many chances to leave everything behind and start a new life, why do they have to go on and commit more crimes to cover their crime? I really don't understand what are they thinking about.
Ayase is very pretty I must admit (and oh man she is younger than me! envy!), but I just can't stand her character inside the show. A totally selfish character.
If not I was eager to catch the first dorama of Kassy since his 'comeback', I would not have finish this dorama... (n the fact his parts are very limited, it is really hard for me to continue watching... plus his hairstyle sucks big time... but i thought he done a good job)
The whole tone of the show made me sooooo depress. Was feeling Really really down for the few days I was watching this show.
Depressing, really dunno how I managed to finally reach the last episode.
I would never re-watch it again.

OH OH! I thought Fukuda Mayuko (the young girl) acted really good. I was quite scared of her while watching the show. haha
Her eyes are scary when she said all those words. Like an adult trapped in a kid body. Scary.

4. Must see [Rating: 10/10]
First off, some comments here mesmerized me. The first question that pops out is, "Do people think?" OK, Byakuyakou has the two lead casts that are the same in Sekachuu. In Byakuyakou and Sekachuu 1 person dies, 1 person lives (main characters). THAT'S IT. I probably will never understand how people come up with the concept "Byakuyakou and Sekachuu are similar". Well let me ask you, are "Romeo & Juliet" and "Hamlet" similar??? They're both written by Shakespeare after all!!!!
That said, Byakuyakou is a dark drama. I haven't seen A million stars falling, but this is one of the best Jdrama, if not drama overall, that I've ever seen. Yes, its logic has some loopholes, but what kind of dramas/movies is free from loopholes? The important thing is, they tried to portray the connection between the 2 characters, and they did it well. The filming is impressive, the acting is superb. I don't know what else people are demanding from this.

Also some people give this drama a 5 because it's "depressing". If you can't stand dark dramas, don't watch them! Just because a drama is "depressing" doesn't mean it's bad. Many times it's quite the reverse, actually.

5. Darkest so far... [Rating: 9/10]
Amazingly dark drama gave me tons of surprises! I'm usually more into basic tearjerkers and not so much into these mystery/thrillers, but I just had to finish this one after first couple of episodes.

Things they did were just awful, and I just didn't se anything coming until it was actually happening. It gave me lots of wow-effects and it also made feel very sorry for their actions. Its nice to watch something like this every once in a while: where main characters are not the knights in shining armours, but do things which make make you cry "WHYYY??" aloud while watching TV.

This was so different that I'm definitely gonna watch it again to see how much I missed at the first round.

Don't compare this to Sekachu, even though the leads are the same and some background musics contain same themes. This one is not a true tearjerker as Sekachu was :) This is definitely for people liking mystery/crime/thrillers and I'm surprised that I liked it so much :)

6. WOW!! It's Killer!! [Rating: 9/10]
This drama is UNPREDICTABLE.... Every episode sent chills down my spine.... What an amazing plot, performance... almost everything was perfect.... but at every point i thought, why? why would anyone do so much for one person... we have one life and spending it in doing such things is just ridiculous....
was it love or was it pity that made him commit such crimes, was it because she befriended him when he had none... or was it because he was so ashamed and guilty of what his father did that the only way to rectify the harm was through a series of crimes.... at a point u tend to hate Yukiho, because she does persuade him to do stuff....
i even pitied Ryoji when she fell for the other guy....
some parts were simply unnecessary.... but still.. this one is amazing.... i wouldn't watch it again since it's too sad but i can say it's the best drama i've ever watched.... long enough, scary enough, strange enough and sad enough.... for me!!

7. Omoshiroi [Rating: 7/10]
Byakuyakou has quite an interesting plot that was written pretty well. It was interesting to see a couple fugitives in a more sympathetic viewpoint and had some good character development. However I can't say this was the best or the most enjoyable drama. While I felt Ayase Haruka did a good job acting here, her character, Yukiho, got on my nerves. I thought she was quite selfish, and it was hard for me to take her seriously after she had her friend sexually assaulted because of her own jealousy. Yamada's character, Ryouji, on the other hand I did like. He was just doing things he needed to in order to survive and to protect Yukiho. The other issue I had was with some disturbing scenes, like Ryouji having to screw a dead corpse. Thankfully that was never shown, but even implying it creeped me out.

8. Over doing it! [Rating: 6/10]
Perhaps owing to the success of "Crying out love in the centre of the world", the producers are trying to use the same formula in a totally different story and setting.

However, from the first episode, it's clearly over doing it, especially with the BGM. It's also unnecessary to tell the story in a retrospective perspective.

The story itself seems to be even less compelling than its counterpart when the boy kills his own father without any strugglings. We will see how the rest turns out!

The 2nd and the 3rd episodes are making the story less feasible. They could just fled away from Japan and start their own life. Why waste the time and wait?

In Crying out love, we could see drama building up to the climax. This one, I am simply dissappointed so far. Let's see how it resolve itself.

hmmmmmmm, this show was amazing......it was so raw.....idk what to say........every episode sucked me in deeper and deeper and deeper to where i ended up watching this show in less than a day. the casting was great, two of my top actors were in it, ayase and yamada...the story was amazing, nothing annoyed, except the detective...i feel like i connected with the characters more and more as each episode progressed, to the point where, i wanted the show to end faster because i was so concerned about the well being of yukiho and ryo. i still feel like maou was better than this, but i fully understand why this show won so many awards, if you havent seen this show, kill yourself

10. Great Couple, Ayase & Yamada, Can't Stop the R [Rating: 9/10]
I like this, I don't care if it's kind of similar to Sekai, it has a different plot and the emotion in this is more different. The love scenes between the two aren't as compelling as Sekai, but they are a good combination. The story was almost perfectly plotted out, and the plot twists did make it more mysterious, though I do hve problems with the sudden encounter of new characters, the transition isn't too smooth.
I recommend this for any one who likes love stories and a nice suspense drama. It leaves you at the tension of whether they will get caught again..

PS: Tanaka Koutaro in one of Yamada's dramas again!

For those who want to watch this and are expecting it to be like Sekachu, you'd be wrong. You could call it the Antichu....it was dark and for adults. The storyline is a little far fetched but once again the brilliant acting by Yamada Takayuki and Ayase Haruka make this dorama shine. The suspense was snipping at me the whole time. It was truly a Journey under a Midnight Sun..... from start to finish. I can see why this dorama received so many awards. This show is a definite SEE IT in my book.

It makes no sense, but I can't stop watching cos I want to see how it probably explodes in some form or another in the end. I put this somewhere close to koukou kyoshi. Crazy. Over the top. Making it all of a sudden seem comical. Cos you can't relate to the insanity at all. Why watch you say? Now that maybe a question we will never know the answer to.

This drama was a great disappointment. It seemed to just be a reason for Yamada Takayuki and Ayase Haruka to be on the screen as a main couple again. However, the kind of charisma and chemistry that they had on the screen in "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu" cannot be found in "Byakuyakou" and that is mainly do to the outlandish plot and subpar dialogues. The story starts off quickly and is very dark. Of course any drama dealing with a pedophile is automatically a little too disturbing to watch. Anyway, the story hints at it being a fast-paced emotional rollercoaster but ends up being just a lame B story. I could not even take it seriously and thus quickly lost interest in viewing the entire series after a few episodes. I still forced myself to watch it, but I admit that I did not think any more highly of the series after that.

Hopefully in their collaborations together in the future, the directors will put more thought into the actual story rather than just rely on the actor and actress to carry the popularity of the show.

I wasn't sure how to rate this drama, because I find that the good parts and bad parts of it conflict with eachother...but i think its key element is the intrigue created by the story. Yes, it was overdone with all the slowmo's and crap, but the actors were brilliant - THIS IS ACTING. Ayase Haruka's part was just sooooo different from what she played in sekaachu, and i just hated what she would do to Yamada to save her own ass, but it was still awesome...And I must say that Kimpachi-sensei (don't know his real name) really added an extra dimension to the story telling and you could tell what he was thinking even though he wouldn't say anything...it's top grade acting. Worth watching...

Since i read the first reviews on this site.. i was expecting something similar to Sekai no chuushin... but OMFG!! Did those guys even watched both doramas... apart from the casting they have nothing in common!!!!
BtW... i never tough that Atsuro Watabe was such a splendid actor!!! (From the silly brother in Beautiful Life to this Evil character in Byakuyakou...!!! He's amazing!!!)
Well... i dont enjoy depressing doramas that much... (thats y i gave it only a 8 out of 10...) but i must say that this one is really good!!! For those who like this kind of dorama... i really recommend it!!! =^^=

This was just awesome, canLt understand why it didnLt get higher ratings.
Anyway the cast was just awesome, specialy Yamada Takayuki, Takeda Tetsuya and the 2 kids.
Those 2 kids in the first episode were just awesome; and i thought Takayuki wouldnLt be able to top his performance in Sekai Chuushin but this one as Ryo was as good as the one from Sekai Chuushin.
I loved how everything was unexpected in this dorama, itLs not like the main characters were that sick but they just put themselves to a world of lies that they couldnLt return.
The whole dorama was so intense, from the begining to the end, pure intensity.

Intense, compelling, tragic and addicting from the first episode to the last. I cried a river everytime I watched this series about the dark and twisted love bond of two childhood friends. I don't know which is more tragic this drama or Crying out Love in the Center of the World. Yamada and Ayase gave another great acting performance as Ryoji and Yuuki who only have each other. I didn't want the series to end. I wanted Ryoji and Yuuki to remain in suspensed animation forever to love and walk in the sun. " You are my sun." they tell each other. If you love stories of first love, enduring love, then this is a must see.

Very dark. Very depressing. I love it. xD
I admit that the plot seems pretty far-fetched at times. There are just too many, too horrible things going on. What makes up for it are the characters though. Both main characters do cruel, unbelievable things to cover up for each other but to me they seemed believable. The acting was great also and it's maybe due to that.
This is definitely nothing for those who want something happy. It's for those who don't mind really depressing storylines and immoral characters (immoral characters with a reason but I know there are people who would still feel put off).

I loved this drama! Now I want to read the novel too!
The plot was intriguing, and got me really think about
what crime and punishment really mean.
Takeda Tetsuya really added that extra dimension to the
drama.

However, I didn't really like most actors in this
drama. I personally think Yamada and Ayase don't really
look like a real couple. Yamada is shorter than Ayase!
Also, his hairstyle sucked. Kashiwabara Takashi looks ugly
here...Moreover, the plot was sometimes hard to understand.
I still don't get what exactly happened in episode 3~4.

Still, it's a very well made drama..:)

Everybody says this is about a sad romance, but I couldn't see the romantic part in any point. For me, this is a suspenseful thriller and an interesting human drama. The two main actors have, again, great chemistry, but there is nearly no romantic love, it's more a strange symbiotic connection.
The weak point about this is the implausible bad police/ detective work. With simple methods like fingerprints on the gas valve or modern ones like DNA analysis of hairs they would habe been convictable from the start and on every later crime.

TBS might have use this kind of story in order to utilize the acting capability of Yamada and Ayase, and they were right, both won an award for that including the series itself. However, as for me, this is just a one time thing, I donft plan to re-watch it again and besides not everyone can be fond of the story. Their relationship can be beautiful and enviable except for the crime and the killings. I just donft like the fact that they have to dirty their hands in order to protect one another.

Byaku Yakou is a tragic dark love story. This dorama shows a different perspective of a different kind of life that most people try to stay away from. One of the main characters, Ryoji, goes through a long and painful life which was a result of a murder. As consequence, he and his lover, Yukiho, end up going through the dark side life. The end was surprisingly sad. Watch this drama for what it is worth and not for all the dark scenes that are shown.

This isn't my favorite type of drama, but I loved it. Nothing can beat the Yamada Takayuki's voice over. Many parts were confusing, only because my Chinese skills sucks. The ending was sort of predictable, but his son was too cute. =)

I also give mad propz for the 2 kids who acted the young ryo&yukiho. I enjoy that part the most. Overall, *yay* the drama is finished.

A very deep and dark, heavy drama. Both leads did an amazing job on their characters....great acting. Shows a twisted side of human nature. You really get drawn into the plot. First episode was probably the best. Too bad they kind of give away the end at the front. Middle feels a bit like a pain marathon through a bad nightmare...but then thats the point of it all.

OK, if all you want to watch is a romantic, happy-ending drama, this is not the one for you. If you are seeking something above and beyond, something that makes you think, wonder, ache, agonize, then this is a must-watch. Beautiful filming, strong cast and an extremely powerful plot. Best drama I've ever seen (subjectively) hands down.

I couldn't bring myself to continue after the first episode.... I need to be in the right frame of mind to watch the rest of the series. It was actually very good, however, it is obviously a tearjerker. I had to stop before I'd invested too much emotions on the main characters.... I WILL finish it eventually.

i re-rate this drama... cos after careful thinking, it was actually good.. this is the kinda of drama that requires you to think and ponder.... very dark indeed, but actually it was well made. disappointed at the choice of the cast for the movie though, i thought the original cast would be used...

Watched first two episodes. Great writing, very clever. This is a bit on the dark side...but I actually like that about it. I definately want to finish this one.

Update: It wasn't that great. It ended lower than it started. But all of the things going on kept it interesting enough.

There is something about dramas like this (sleeping forest, kou kou kyoushi, etc.) that creates a rift among viewers, either you like it or don't. The drama asks you to leave logic at the door and make believe that something like this could actually happen, sorry I don't buy it.

Definitely riding on the success of "Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai o Sakebu" on this one. There were too many times that it was shot overdramatically I thought (BGM, camera angles, slowmo). The story itself is very compelling however.

VERY interesting story...once u started lying, entire of your life will full of lies and become synonym..Be brave to be honest. Lies sometimes can be good for some reason but not for crime. Suggest people to watch out this drama

I could easily say that this was one of the best dramas I've ever seen. I loved it to bits and pieces. Yamada was brilliant here, I love his acting. Now if only the novel was available in English, I'd have loved to read it.

Turned out to be a greater deception than expected. I love Yamada Takayuki`s acting but the story was way too farfetched, as in some things were simply not logic law wise, even in Japan.

That turned me down greatly...

Another good performance put forth by Yamada Takayuki who has successfully portrayed the down & out character he played. Although this dorama is not top class, it is worth watching for its storyline & cast.

i was really drawn into it at first. but some where in the middle it was just kind of average. still a good drama though. it's one you should watch to the very end. (awwwwwwwwwww poor ryo... such a good character)

Very sad story. One major lesson from this dorama: never cover bad deed with another bad deed.. When you once lie, you'll always lie for the rest of your life. This kind of life never bring you happiness..

COMPLETE. It starts great for me, drama with suspense, sometimes you'll feel like spanking the lead girl because of her messed-up mind and ideal. I guess that's what she got from such a painful childhood.

Very stunning story that gripped me to the heart. One characters can get slightly too annoying, and the atmosphere can get pretty dark at times, but if you like that, then great. I heartily recommend.

Yamada Takayuki and Ayase Haruka together again, but I didn't really enjoy this one. I think it has a unique story, but it's too dark for my taste. Nevertheless, the main leads acted extremely well.

Only seen ep 1. would have continued, but didn't want to.
It's good, the bg goes hand in hand with the sad story. The casts are very appropriate and even the young ones did a great job in acting.

Some may say that this drama is over the top and implausible, but I still love it. Then again, a lot of dramas are improbable seeing as they are riddled with complicated love triangles, depressing handicaps, unbearable personal situations, and coincidental meetings of destined lovers. This dramas just so happens to contain a lot more of those "impossibilties." That's why I find it so addicting and entertaining.

this is not just one of my favorit dorama but i also can say this is one of the best and it is the best for dark dorama.. a beatiful plot and a strong performances from yamada and ayase. they were look innocent but also scary.. fukuda mayuko who played the young yukiho was outstanding too, very potential artist.

The story is dark and tragic but yet display the prurity of love between children till they grown into full adults. A breath taking drama that really bring out the dark side of the world.

Super dark and sad drama. Good story and incredible actors. I'd definitely recommend it, but be prepared because everything goes worse and worse and it's gonna ruin your spirits.
