Synopsis
The story revolves around Take Seiji, who quits his job after three months. With no dreams, no savings, and a poor relationship with his family, he becomes a hikikomori. However, after his mother falls ill with depression, he ends up having to take on a part-time job at a construction site. Because of that, he soon decides to work towards rebuilding his life: "Even though I'm just a freeter, I'm going to buy a house for the sake of my family."

One of the people he meets at the construction site is Chiba Manami, who graduated from a top-class university and joined a well-known general contracting firm. Manami is the complete opposite of Seiji. But while their personalities clash at first, they gradually come to understand each other.

1. Must watch!! [Rating: 10/10]
I can't tell you just how much i love this drama. I actually want to give more points to it but 10 seems to be the most i can give ene
It's one of the few drama series i watched more than once *chokes*more like 10 times*cough* And every time i watched it i just couldn't stop because it really caught me completely.
One big plus is the cast!! Ninomiya Kazunari as Take Seiji was just a perfect choice. His acting was superb and his character just too adorable and you just rly wanted to hug him and kick him sometimes.. but with love. You just wanted his character to get it together haha. I feel like Take is kind of a lot like Ninomiya actually ^^ Takenaka Naoto as his father was A++++ btw.
These two just have so much great chemistry so they really seemed a lot like real father and son. Loved their complex relationship btw.
Karina.. omg, Karina bby was so great in this one too. I found that her and Seiji were kind of an odd couple, but also really lovable and precious. So happy they ended up together, in their somewhat really awkward relationship ;A; Really really cute.

This drama really had everything i needed in a drama.. some parts to laugh, some parts to cry, some raburabu huhu~ Plus i think it was extremely realistic regarding the story of Sumiko's depressions, Seiji's struggles to find a job, the family intern problematic etc..
I was also really happy with the Special btw. It has it's nice own story as well!
Kinda wished there would've been a special that showed Seiji and Chiba couple like 5 years later.. something like "Freeter buys a house — again" for his new family , Chiba and maybe a their first kid owo, i would have really loved that. I'm sure it won't happen but i can dream at least, right? haha
However, i can really 100% recommend this drama to everyone, i am sure no one will regret watching it!

2. Great characters and plot. Watch it! [Rating: 9/10]
I have never seen a more dysfunctional-functional father-son relationship. It's pretty interesting, really. That aside, this dorama is worth watching. There's a good, steady plot going on with commendable acting and well-paced character growth. I think that they could have fleshed out Karina's character slightly more, but other than that I'd recommend watching this.
Just the characters alone are worth the watch, I think. I love the support cast! Besides his family members, Ninomiya's construction crew members are great too.
But of course, as with all such doramas, the atmosphere can get a little dark and gloomy. If you can't stand such stuff then perhaps it's not for you.

Ninomiya Kazunari is one of Japan's top actors right now, despite being an idol. The depth of his character here was gratefully felt. On the other hand, I was surprised at the somewhat straight-forward and optimistic look at depression. Maybe Japan handles the condition differently than we do in North America, but as a sufferer of depression and having a mother afflicted with it, I can tell you that finding help is never that easy and it is something one might never come from. Considering the severity of her depression I would've expected the cause to be more complex, or for her to have depression coupled with other personality disorders. Ah, but leave it to Japan to over-simplify things, as usual. All around this had a great cast with solid writing, though it was underwritten, and good direction. I'm glad I got to see this one through to the end!

Extremely unrealistic at times, but still a lot of fun. I normally don't like Ninomiya's acting, but I think he did a pretty good job in this. It was also my first experience with Asano Atsuko and I enjoyed her acting. I want to say that the "symptoms" of depression don't seem realistic, moreso a different disorder, though perhaps I'm wrong because I don't have much personal experience with depression of a strong magnitude that isn't already being treated.

Anyway, I really like the construction workers in this show. They were all really lovable and remind me of some of the people I've met that have worked construction here in Japan.

"Freeter", that's what Kentaro Oe from one of my favorite anime of all time called himself. One day i typed the word "freeter" on google search, and found this drama listed. I never heard of this drama before, and by chance and by luck I found it by accident. And I'm really fortunate and glad that I did. I read the brief synopsis, and I was intrigued. This is one of the best drama I have seen. I could feel and relate to Seiji's family. Seiji's dad reminds me of my dad, Seiji reminds me of myself. The drama just felt very real and for that I really enjoyed and loved it.

Nice dorama, wonderfully depicted and produced. Ninomiya Kazunari's acting was superb; i loved the way he slowly changes and somehow matures because of his mother's depression. There are many plots inside this dorama, some of them not being really important but necessary to relax the tension of Seiji's problems. I really like Takenaka Naoto and although at first I hated him as a father in this dorama, finally I got to understand him. Must see.

Ninomiya does a great job in this drama. His character's emotions are easily felt, and you experience the pain of the family together. It becomes real to you that you just want to help him and see him succeed. Though sometimes slow, it has an impactful message of doing well for others and supporting those around you. Life is not just about your happiness, but the happiness of your family as a whole.

Well-crafted dorama without much unnecessary plot. It depicts the "under the radar" problems of the japanese society very well, like the social pressure from the neighbourhood on housewives, the shame of a family with an unemployed son or the pre-decision on the career of elementary school kids. But the plot became very predictable too often. Especially the father and son are very good acted.

Good drama. My biggest complaint is with the director's decision to turn Asano Atsuko into a nodding semi-coherent robot. She's a much better actress than that and given the chance I think she could have given a much more realisitic portrayal of someone suffering from mental illness.

All the other actors did a good job, especially Takenaka Naoto as the father.

I give the first episode 10 point, perfect, i cried at the end of the show. But everything goes down at the second episode. It's pretty, but somehow i fell it down. Maybe we need more love story between Nino and karina. Nino is still a great actor, no doubt. When he argued with his father, it feel so real.

This drama shows unvarnished and honestly social problems in reffering to the spirit of our time in modern society. Futhermore it's about the things that constitute human being, no matter who he is and what he does. One of the best drama i ever saw! Note: Don't miss the special episode.

Well acted with a strong lead story and very good sub plots. Good story about finding yourself and maturing and growing up, as well as wanting approval from your father, and just oridinary family life and all that goes with it. Really liked this drama!

alright drama. refreshing storyline, since it has other components like mental illness. however, what are the chances of a cute girl at a construction company who is single and available? of course, when watching dramas, please suspend reality checks.

Still need to finish the last few episodes.... but I really liked it's pace and the kimitte song. And of course it's pretty motivating..... some of the subplots were not to my taste but overall it's pretty good and gets you thinking

I never finished the series, but it seems like a decent story. I think I liked the first episode, but I didn't really like it enough to warrant watching the series until the end.

Too slow dorama, cast great with Karina. Not one of the best but worth it if you like Ninomiya or Karina, I did enjoy it although there are way better doramas
16. Comments by dokaben [Rating: 6/10]
Intriguing start, but then it became very generic. No real chemistry between the leads or uncertainty about where the plot was heading. Bland.

not bad. I like how it is very down to earth and realistic drama. not dramatic or over the top at all
