1. boring boring. [Rating: 5/10]
i had expectations because the writer who wrote this also wrote watashitachi no kyoukasho. also people hyping it up saying it's the best drama that it's up there with jin blahblahblah. and i say HELL no.

And so even though the first ep was slow and boring and they barely talked (so much silence and lack of BGM) I thought just like WTNK it'll pick up etc. However it did not. It does get more MELODRAMATIC & the BGM did not incresa :(. the meloDRAMA's nowhere near the levels of 14 sai no haha (now this drama is so embarrassing) but umm... it's still cringy and embarrassing to watch.

I don't like the lead actress that much. she always makes the same face, and she always whispers during you know those type of scenes... it's just boring.

i fast/forwarded/ skipped after ep 5 and i felt like i should have done that earlier. ep 8 was about the stuff i wanted to know but still it wasn't much. If you really like SLOW MELODRAMATIC dramas with minimal/below minimal background music then do WATCH IT. the melodrama that was in hanayori dango or 14 sai

It's nowhere near JIN fer sure. mother just tries to make the watcher cry instead of making a good drama with a good storyline/acting etc.. i would suggest watching watashitachi no kyoukasho INSTEAD to see how much talent the writer has.

GOOD POINT: I like the theme song nakigao smile by hinaco.

2. a must-watch [Rating: 9/10]
Wonderful drama, great performances from all the cast. The main strength of this drama is the script, the writers treated difficult topics like child abuse and adoption with sensitivity and never took the easy way out. The backstory of Reina/Tsugumi's mother is quite an eye-opener, the drama makes no excuses for her failure to protect her daughter while helping you to understand how she ended up the way she did.
There was just one thing I found annoying about this drama: too much of the dialogue is whispered, often in scenes where it makes no sense to whisper.

3. Serious drama that feels like you're watching a mo [Rating: 9/10]
Very serious drama unlike your typical serious JDoramas (Last Friends, White Spring, Smile etc.). No overacting in "Mother", just a strong lead actress and a strong and excellent performance by the little girl... she will be an actress to watch out for in the future! The things I love about JDoramas that make them so different from North American dramas, I didn't find in Mother. So the acting and story really had to carry the series through... and it did! Compelling story that will melt your heart and shed a tear.

4. A triumph [Rating: 10/10]
The only problem with this drama is that most others won't be able to measure up.

Every episode had chracters that interacted like real people in real situations and the end of every episode from the first to the 10th was suspensful and made the viewer on edge to see the next episode. Great ending which actually is rare, many great Doramas have not been able to end well.

5. Probably the best dorama ever made. [Rating: 10/10]
oh my god.
Just finished watching this series. I simply just can not get my tears to stop flowing.
Probably the best Dorama i have ever watched! Really can't decide if this or 1 litre of tears gets the 1st place on my list.
I dont think i've ever watched something with this much impact. Incredible acting, especially from Nao and Tsugumi.

6. beautiful and wonderful [Rating: 10/10]
I've only watched three episodes but I love it already, I also see how it wouldn't suite some peoples tastes. Even though I just started I'd say it's kind of like Aoi Tori without Anne Suzuki, the girl does good but she's not Anne, I think I'll write more when I finish especially if the ending is different from what I'm guessing

Granted I haven't seen many jdoramas, this is the one that got me hooked and now addicted. Ashida Mana is incredible at such a young age. Cannot believe this is not on Top 100 list. Outrage, I tell you!

A truly impeccable series, and certainly one of the best I watched in 2010. Matsuyuki Yasuko was lovely and soft-spoken, but timed her outbursts well. The little girl playing her daughter was utterly adorable. Actually, I was surprised by the series. However, pleasantly so. I expected it to follow the somewhat crazed relationship between a kidnapper and her kidnapping victim, with them experiencing some kind of mutual stockholm syndrome (which, in truth, they did), but it ended up being about the relationship between a mother and her child on so many different levels. In fact, there were a multitude of mothers portrayed in the series, and I loved the generational aspect and how each of their mother-daughter relationships complimented and contrasted each other. In the end I was moved to tears. No matter how unbelievable it might seem, they truly became mother and daughter.

I had some issues with the pacing; I think they should have spent more time wandering around at the beginning before they end up at the mother's house in Tokyo, and the flashback episode about Rena's real mother was horrible; the entire episode should have been cut. Also the melodrama increases as the show progresses which is disappointing but to be expected from J-drama, thankfully it never goes overboard enough to ruin it. But regardless of any flaws it's an extremely emotionally moving drama, enough so that I more than once found myself experiencing a distinct teary-eyed sensation, something that pretty much never happens to me. It's really not quite "the greatest drama ever" that a lot of people are making it out to be, and I think it will largely be forgotten in time, but it is definitely a must see.

Thought provoking and very touching. The theme on "mother-daughter" relationship was brought out really well, though I actually wouldnt mind if the series had explored each mother-daughter relationship even deeper. The cast was superbly outstanding. Been a fan of Matsuyuki Yasuko since Kyumei Byotou 2. She's got style, and did really well in this drama. Cant believe the little actress is only 5! She's amazing at her age. Tanaka Yuko portrayed the role really well too. The ending was a little sad for me, but I guess it's probably the most befitting ending to the show..

Mother is the only drama ever that made me shed a tear or two. It's a proper drama carried by a series of strong female characters ranging from the 5 year old child actress to the seasoned mother figures. It tackles a broad range of serious traumas (what a chilly first episode). I admit, emotional buttons are pushed shamelessly but the characters have dignity and strength, it's easily forgiven.

I watched this after "Soredemo, Ikite Yuku" because it was by the same writer. Decent, but not as strong or smooth. From the first episode on I couldn't help but think, "This isn't going to end well." Excellent acting, intriguing plot, some deep thoughts on the sacrifice of mothers, but it just didn't grab me. It also seemed to rely on many unbelievable coincidences.

Good cast, strong performance by all. Well written - touching moments throughout, annoyances few and far between. There's several stories - much of the cast with their own personal issues - adds to the interest. It is slow paced so make it relaxed viewing.

The best drama I've ever seen, hands-down. The acting is incredible, the story is paced perfectly, and the little girl could give lessons to any number of older actresses on technique; she is a natural. This series has the biggest heart. Prepare to sob.

Kudos to Matsuyuki Yasuko and the little actress playing Rena (I can't believe she's only 5 years old D:). Every episode made me teary-eyed at least once. The ending seemed fair and appropriate.

average - At first it is authentic and down-to-earth but sadly it becomes more melodramatic with every episode.
