Synopsis
A drama commemorating TBS's 60th anniversary, the story is about 11 members who were sent to the South Pole for the first time in February 1957 in a national project to explore Antartica. They were accompanied by a dogsled of 19 Sakhalin dogs. When they left for Japan a year later, they were forced to leave the dogs behind due to the bad weather. In January 1959, Kuramochi Takeshi and some others joined a third expedition to ascertain the fate of the dogs Taro and Jiro.

So, it took me almost 4 months to end watching this dorama. It was a hard one to watch, I'm not a strong dog lover but the show was prepared to make you cry A LOT. Obviously, the Soya was full of people with their own stories, but this show just focuses on the dogs that went on the expedition and how they were forced to be left behind. Photograph, music and scenery were great, but unfortuntaley in some of the most dramatic scenes there were some "production errors" that made me lose the focus on the drama (for example, distances between dogs and/or people clearly changing between planes). They also "humanized" the dogs too much I think, to make the drama even more intense I suppose, although I'm not a dog expert. I've googled this story many times and I haven't been able to find detailed information about the expeditions, and I don't like not knowing what was true and what was not in the show (obviously, since some of the dogs were never found, it is impossible to know how they died). Anyway I feel relieved I knew the story before hand. If not, I would have cried even more than I did. I had the chance to be at Tokyo Tower 3 months ago and I'm glad I saw and understood the dogs statue in its base. I recommend this dorama as this story is a story everyone should know.

I love animals. I love history. And I love Japan. So this series has everything going for it, but I knew they were going to royally F something up and I knew it would be the dogs. Basically knowing the outcome of this from the beginning, I knew we would end up with either something amazing, or we were going to end up with basically Milo and Otis. They do a respectable job for more than the first half...and then it begins...

Dogs bringing fish back to sick comrades. Dogs looking at former dog enemies in danger, and then making the decision to save their life. DOGS THROWING THEIR CHAINS DOWN TO DOGS FALLING OF A CLIFF AND PULLING THEM TO SAFETY! ARE YOU FREAKING SERIOUS! And it leads to stupid inconsistencies like, if the dog is smart enough to chew through another dog's collar to save it's life, then why did he leave a bunch of other dogs tied up to die?! The opening credits were so beautiful and felt like, and the music sounded like the opening to Jin, and the first half was so good, I thought this was going to be great, but oh well, what can you expect.

I wanted to like this series. I really did! Kimura Takuya, dogs, and adventure! What more could I have asked for? The dogs were amazing. Not just their "acting" but how they were portrayed in shots and editing came off very well. Unfortunately, the human actors left much to be desired. Each and every actor, except for a choice moment with Kimura Takuya, decided to play a cardboard-cutout rather than try to create a real character. This was due in part to the script, I'm sure, and it's also a common affliction in Japanese dramas. Here I expected more, given the already high production values! They truly dumbed-down the characters and events to a level that I felt was insulting the memory of the real people of the first Japanese Antarctic expedition. Still, a tear-jerker ending. Even though the foreshadowing was far too heavy-handed.

I didn't like the first two episodes , too much testosterone and brain cell killing stirring music. I guess if you're Japanese you're meant to feal stirred by this, but I kept thinking wow the planning for this expedition is bad and some of the decisions made by the expedition are testosterone fueled and not based on cold logic and reason. This gets better though as it progresses and at times resembles a Disney movie, the dogs survival is sanitised you never get to see them ripping up a penguin or a seal but you do get to see a far fetched rescue where a dog is going to fall down a chasm.

As usual, a little tooo much drama and repetition. BUT. The last episode brought the whole national pride issue out of the sappy background and into the spotlight, and rightly so. So that bumped this drama up to a 9 from an 8. And also. Really, that was a 0 chemistry and awkward all the way love story for me. BUT. Takuya Kimura just happends to have the uncanny ability to make any couple's last scene look so incredibly romantic.

This drama was absolutely fantastic! The acting was spectacular and I really enjoyed the casting! Also the dogs used in the drama deserve a round of applause. They're extremely well trained dogs and their doggy acting was wonderful.

It's a beautiful story, albeit insanely emotional. Prepare tissues if you're gonna watch this.

The first antarctic expedition for Japan, trying to show the world that the Japanese have pride and willing to compete after the war. Sadly none of this matters, because soon the dogs take over the show. Yes this is a dog show.

Nice drama, Kimutaku plays quite well in it, Very good ending song. The thing is that I think they deal too much with the dogs, I would have liked more historical points than crying for some dogs. It's my point of view.

Would have been better if they had cut a lot of the melodrama out of the first two episodes. It was much better once they got to Antartica. But the real stars of this drama were the dogs!

Wonderful and heartwarming drama about adventure and human-dog relationship to be living in antartica. The dogs were well-trained to act that good. and Takuya Kimura is the best :)

Could have been grand if it hadn't been for the cheesy dialogues and the overly melodramatic scenes (worse than Jin). Some of my favorite actors are in it and the dogs were cool.

Heart-moving Kimura Takuya as always, nice soundtrack, astonishing pictures. But somewhat too long for the given amount of story. They should have made a Tanpatsu.

It ain't bad but it ain't bold. Entertaining but brings out nothing else. Probably a 9 for those who like dogs.

If only there are two rating systems. I say,8 for the dogs. 2 for the cast
