[Currently - Jan 2021 - available on Viki as "Pretty Proofreader."] I dove into this not knowing what to expect - actually a little exasperated with Viki's Rom-Com-heavy drama lineup and expecting a frivolous comedy. Instead I got an instant classic, easily on a par with "Life," "Joker," "Voice," "With Love."
Kouno Etsuko - whose shortened name "KouEtsu" is also the word for "proofreader" - is a lifelong fan of a fashion magazine and dreams of becoming an editor there. She tries (and fails) repeatedly to get hired, and one day succeeds - but not hired as an editor, but rather as a proofreader, a job seen as the bottom rung on the publisher's ladder. Nonetheless, she plows ahead with flawless and outstanding work as though her life depends on it. Which it does, when you think about it.
It's "only" a romantic comedy, but it is also a "jimi ni sugoi" (quietly amazing) character study of a heroine who is at once: intellectually brilliant, ethically uncompromising, admirable in her dedication to excellence, ingenious in her often spontaneous innovations and problem-solving, and jaw-droppingly yet almost inadvertently beautiful in every single scene in this drama.
It may sound maudlin or clichéd, but this particular drama is one of a lengthy list of J-dramas I can honestly say has made me a better person just for having seen it.
