Synopsis
30-year-old Isayama Nami is a newly-wed housewife who lives in a quiet, exclusive neighbourhood. She has been living peacefully with her husband Yuki, an IT entrepreneur whom she fell in love at first sight at a matchmaking party. Her immediate worry is her bad taste, complete hopelessness at cooking and a husband who will not eat dinner at home. In fact, Nami has a past that she hides from even her husband. Born an orphan, she is hooked on a life of thrills and survived without knowing love. She put this checkered past behind and staked her life on obtaining a warm family. However, after six months of marriage, Nami has become dissatisfied with an ordinary housewife’s ordinary family life. She now realises that the housewives who seem happy, have all sorts of problems. One day, she attends a cooking class at the invitation of her neighbours Ohara Yuri and Sato Kyoko who are housewives. Yuri is like a knowledgeable older sister while Kyoko comes across as an inquisitive, friendly younger sister. As Nami gets their advice about “housewives’ wisdom” which she has been a stranger to until now such as the ways to season dishes and create the atmosphere that will tempt her husband, she begins to experience kindness and warmth through friendships with females for the first them. Meanwhile, Nami instinctively senses that Chika who attends the same cooking class is being abused by her husband but hiding the fact, and consults Yuri and Kyoko. In an attempt to get Chika to open up, the three of them first decide to become her “good friend”. As they engage in mindless chatter, Chika begins to open her heart little by little and confesses that her life is being controlled by her husband Takashi. Nami, Yuri and Kyoko attempt to talk to him personally in order to help Chika but … … Will Nami able solve problems with the approach of a housewife?

[Currently - as of Jan '21 - available on Viki as "Caution: Hazardous Wife"] This is a cool drama about a former secret agent who settles into married life. She's horrible at cooking and longs for the excitement of her former job, and when conflicts and crimes pop up in her neighborhood that leave victims with nowhere to turn, she steps in and takes matters into her own hands.

There's a great James Bond / Lara Croft / Jack Reacher / Dylan Hunter / Hanna / Femme Nikita vibe of "unstoppable kick-butt hero(ine)" and Ayase Haruka in the lead role of Nami Isayama-san is as deadly as she is beautiful.

The drama does not flinch in dealing with things like spousal abuse, kidnappings, yakuza hit men, a neighbor getting exposed and attacked for her past as a porno star, long-lost loves that prompt heavy soul-searching, as well as more familiar scenarios like manipulative leaders of abusive social cliques getting their satisfying comeuppance.

The heart of "Okusama" is the theme of justice, and of course the great heroine character of Nami Isayama. Isayama-san is written with unambiguous ethical character, her background is presented with enough detail to give the character needed depth (particularly enjoyable is a flashback to a Nami at around 12 years old taking a baseball bat and single-handedly cleaning house on a den of Yakuza who'd dared mess with her,) the fight scenes are choreographed well, and the episodic stories and overall story arc are interesting and well-paced.

Given Viki's series photo of Nami-san brandishing a soup ladle, I was expecting this to be a silly comedy. Instead I got an engaging story about justice with an excellent heroine. Definitely time well spent.

Having Ayase Haruka and Honda Tsubasa in the same show made this a must-watch for me. Neither disappointed. Hirosue Ryoko was a pleasant surprise, and I think this was one of her better roles. Ayase's action scenes were actually pretty good.
