You can do a comparison of films with Die Hard (U.S.) and Whiteout (JPN).

Personally i find battle royale a very good movie... It caught my attention for the whole show. I don't really like the bloody scenes in there, but i think the development was full of suspense and that was the best element of the show... not to mention that it a very unique, though quite lame plot.

As recommended already, Kurosawa Akira films are usually quite good. You may even want to try some Kurosawa Kiyoshi films like "Cure", "Kourei" (Seance), and "Kairo" (Pulse). I have yet to see his movie "Bright Future". I've found myself liking Takashi Miike films a great deal, too even though they're a bit disturbing like "Audition" and "Visitor Q".

I haven't seen many but I still feel there are some that should really be seen! (although some said if not all said already, but that means lots of people liked! so good thing!)

-Go! (I liked this one the most I think, really good, you must see it I think, good story! and awesome starting Smile )
-Battle Royale (lol, even though it's kinda dumb it's good at least the first time!)
-Ping Pong (great soundtrack at the very least lol!)
-Waterboys (haha, funny but you see all the guys in speedos, so if that not good for you ^ your loss)
another I liked was Platonic Sex; not sure if it's widely liked, but I thought it was a pretty good movie and will watch it again. I've seen all the other movies at least 3 times each (I like watching a lot of movies more than once ^)

although I must admit, I have hard time recommending japanese movies, I have seen very few but as a whole also I've generally liked a lot more Korean movies, you should try those out too, a good number I'd really recommend ^ still have so many to find and watch tho~
